Chapter 80: Chapter 80 Coffin

She walked down the hallway, humming again.

She pushed the door open with a soft click and froze.

Her eyes went wide. Her breath caught in her throat.

Right in the middle of Class D sat an enormous, glossy black coffin. Its polished lid gleamed under the morning light like something out of an old vampire movie. Boo was floating nearby, doing slow loops around it, his round ghost eyes wide with envy. The other babies were gathered in a loose circle, each one reacting in their own tiny way.

Alina stopped dead in the doorway, her folder nearly slipping from her hands. "What... is THIS?" she asked, her voice half squeak, half stern teacher tone.

Boo zipped over like a tiny gossip bee, eyes shining. "Teacher! Teacher!! Vlad Jr. brought his custom-made bed for nap time! It’s sooo cool!"

Boo sniffed a little and then thought, If Boo had Mom and Dad too, Boo would get custom bed too, he thought sadly.

Luna, who was in her tiny wolf form today, was circling the coffin like a guard dog, her wet nose sniffing the edges. Her tail flicked once in suspicion. Sable, Kelpie, and Lucian had all shuffled back a good few steps.

Rocky stood half-hidden behind his chair, his stone-like fingers tapping nervously on his desk as he watched the thing like it might bite.

Alina pressed her palm to her forehead and took a deep breath. Be calm, she told herself. Be calm — it’s just a giant baby coffin in the middle of your bright, cheerful classroom. That’s normal... apparently.

She dropped her hand and forced her voice to sound semi-normal. "Okay. Where is Vlad Jr.?"

"Teacher! He’s inside!!" Drake shouted, practically bouncing on his feet like an overexcited puppy. "He’s taking a test nap! Look, look!"

As if on cue, the heavy lid creaked open with an eerie, fancy little click. Cold air rolled out in a visible mist, brushing over Alina’s shoes and making her toes curl from the chill. Vlad Jr. sat up slowly, his neat uniform completely perfect, hair combed to shiny vampire prince perfection. He stepped out gracefully, like a tiny royal stepping off a stage.

"Good morning, Teacher," Vlad Jr. said in his soft, elegant voice, bowing his head politely. A puff of frosty air curled out around him, as if he’d stepped straight out of a freezer.

Alina’s mouth dropped open a little. "Everyone... back to your seats. Now, please." She pinched the bridge of her nose as her students scrambled for their chairs, Luna shifting back to her human form with a grumpy little huff as she sat on her chair.

Alina turned back to the coffin, her lips twitching with a mix of disbelief and a laugh she was trying so hard to swallow. "Sweetheart... Vlad Jr....," she said carefully, stepping closer to the tiny vampire boy, "where exactly are you planning to keep this... bed?"

Vlad Jr. lifted his chin with regal pride, his tiny fangs just peeking from his polite smile. "Teacher, you don’t need to worry," he said calmly. "I will place it in the corner." Without another word, he bent down and with shocking ease, he lifted the entire coffin with his small pale hands and carried it to the classroom’s corner.

Alina stared, mouth half-open, one hand pressed flat to her chest like she could stop her heart from skipping beats. "It’s... you’re... how are you carrying that—"

Vlad Jr. placed the coffin down gently, gave it a loving pat, and turned back to her. "Don’t worry, Teacher," he said smoothly, brushing imaginary dust from his sleeve. "It’s very lightweight! Specially made for baby vampires. Baby-friendly," he added, nodding once like he was reciting a fancy advertisement.

Boo floated over, whispering loudly to Kelpie, "Boo wants baby ghost bed too... maybe a haunted pumpkin..."

Drake leaned over his desk, eyes round. "Teacher! Teacher! Can I bring my custom nap bed too?!"

Luna growled softly under her breath, arms crossed. "Your ’nap bed’ is a pile of dirt. Don’t even think about it."

Rocky poked his fingers together, eyes flicking between Vlad Jr. and Alina. "Teacher... do we... all need fancy beds now...?"

Alina just stood there for a moment, pinching the bridge of her nose so hard her eyes watered. I’m a perfectly normal human teacher, she thought helplessly, staring at the sparkling baby coffin now tucked neatly beside the art shelf. Perfectly normal...

She took a deep breath to steady herself. She held her attendance sheet in one hand, her pen tapping lightly on the corner as she calmed her racing heart. It’s just another day, she reminded herself. One baby coffin can’t shake me.

She began calling each name, her voice warm and steady, her eyes landing on each little face in turn.

"Lucian?"

"Present," Lucian said softly, already scribbling something neat in his notebook.

"Kelpie?"

Kelpie peeked up, his wet hair dripping onto his desk. "H-Here..."

"Boo?"

Boo lazily shouted, "Present, Teacher!"

"Luna?"

"Mm," Luna grunted, flipping her hair back like a grumpy queen.

"Vlad Jr.?"

Vlad Jr. gave her a tiny royal nod.

"Felix?"

Felix raised one eyebrow. "Always present." Boo snorted from above.

Finally, her eyes settled on Rocky — sweet, stone-marked Rocky, who was half-hiding behind his desk like he wanted to disappear.

"Rocky," Alina said softly, her voice gentle. "Come here, sweetheart."

Rocky flinched a little, his fingers tapping together like tiny pebbles clicking. He got up slowly, his small shoulders hunched, and padded over to her desk, his shoes making soft tap tap sounds on the floor. He stood in front of her chair, eyes down, clutching the edge of his sleeve.

Alina’s heart melted at the sight. She set her pen down and leaned forward, her elbows resting on her desk so her face was closer to his. She gave him her warmest, kindest smile.

"Sweetheart," she asked softly, her voice like a hug, "why didn’t you come yesterday? Teacher missed you so much."

Rocky peeked up at her through his lashes. His throat bobbed as he swallowed nervously. "I... I was scared..." he whispered, his small voice barely louder than the ticking clock on the wall.

Alina tilted her head, her smile gentle. "Scared? What were you scared of, sweetheart?"

Rocky’s stone-marked fingers fidgeted together, twisting the hem of his sleeve. "I... I heard... it was... it was a thunderstorm at night. And Mama said... maybe it will rain more in the morning... and... I might... turn into rock... and get stuck..."

His cheeks turned pink as he forced out the words, each one heavier than the last. Boo floated closer, wide-eyed and whispering, "Rocky thought he’d be rock statue forever!"

Alina bit her lip to keep from giggling. She didn’t want him to think she was laughing at him. She reached out and gently cupped his small, rough knuckles in her soft hands, her thumbs brushing over the cold stone patterns on his skin.

"Oh, sweetheart," she said, her voice warm as fresh bread, "you don’t need to be scared. Teacher will always be here to help you, no matter the weather. Even if you turn into a big rock — I’ll roll you back home myself."

Rocky’s eyes went round, his lips parting in a tiny, surprised smile. "Y-You’d... roll me?" he squeaked.

"Of course I would!" Alina said with a soft laugh, squeezing his hands. "But I hope you don’t. You’re much cuter when you’re not a boulder, you know."

Rocky’s shoulders dropped a little as he giggled shyly. His feet shuffled on the floor. "O-Okay... I’ll come even if it rains next time."

"Good boy," Alina praised, giving his stone-marked knuckles one last squeeze. "Now go sit down at your desk."

Rocky let out another tiny giggle, covering his mouth with his sleeve. "Okay..."

As he walked back to his seat, Boo floated over his head, whispering dramatically, "Boo will help roll you too! Boo will push your rock butt!"

"Boo!" Rocky squeaked, turning pink again, and the whole class giggled — even Luna’s shoulders shook a little as she hid her smile.

Once Rocky was back at his seat, Alina took a deep, steady breath and smiled at her class. Boo was floating above Rocky’s head, trying to poke his hair but stopping when Alina gave him her stern teacher eyes.

"Alright, my sweethearts," she said, her voice gentle but bright. "First class today is... math!"

A few tiny groans slipped out — Drake let his head thump dramatically onto his desk, and Felix sighed like he’d just been given the world’s hardest mission. Rocky stiffened in his chair, eyes wide, but Alina caught his gaze and gave him her softest, warmest nod. free.w e bn.ov(e)l(.)com

Then Alina started explaining multiplication again from the basics so Rocky could understand too. She spoke slowly and used easy examples, like counting little apples and tiny rocks. She wrote big numbers on the board and pointed to each one so everyone could see.

After that, she gave everyone an exercise to do. Rocky looked nervous, so Alina went to his desk and sat beside him.

She spoke gently, making sure he understood before moving to the next question.

Rocky watched her hand and nodded shyly. He did one problem by himself, and when he looked up, Alina smiled and said, "Good job, sweetheart." That made him smile too.
