Chapter 68 Boat(3)
Chapter 68: Chapter 68 Boat(3)
Alina was still catching her breath when — pop! — the same woman reappeared beside her so suddenly that Alina nearly squeaked. She clutched her chest dramatically. "Goodness — you scared me!"
The elder staff didn’t bat an eye. "Principal Nightshade approves. You may take Class D. Be mindful near the water."
And just as quickly as she came, the woman disappeared again, her dark uniform blending into the corridor’s shadows like a ghost in broad daylight.
I will never get used to that, Alina thought, shaking her head with a tiny laugh. She stepped back into her classroom.
She clapped her hands once, just loud enough to get all their attention. "Guess what, sweethearts?" she said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "We’re going on a small adventure to the lake!"
There was a tiny heartbeat of silence and then a squeal of excitement. Drake’s tail thumped his desk so hard it rattled. Luna’s ears perked high, her eyes glinting like a happy pup. Boo floated upside down, spinning in the air with glee, and even Lucian lifted his head, one tiny brow raised in quiet interest. Kelpie’s eyes lit up too.
Tiny feet began to shuffle. Alina bit back her giggle, pressing her fingers to her lips.
"Alright! Get your boats and line up nicely. Teacher will lead the way!" Alina called out, her voice bright and warm like sunlight spilling across their little heads.
At once, the classroom erupted into the sweetest, tiniest chaos. Tiny hands grabbed their paper boats — some boats got squished, Boo dropped his and caught it mid-air with a proud grin, and Luna growled at Vlad Jr. when he dared peek at hers. But in the end, every baby was lined up like chubby ducklings behind their gentle human teacher.
Alina walked backward a few steps, counting them softly — one, two, three... all nine here. Her heart squeezed at how happy they looked, with their eyes wide with excitement for their first little adventure outside the classroom.
She led them carefully along the shady path to the left side of the kindergarten. The ground felt soft under her shoes, the air cooler under the canopy of trees. Soon enough, the trees opened up, and there it was — the lake, calm and glittering like a giant silver mirror under the morning sun. Tiny ripples danced across its surface, and soft breezes brushed their hair and fur.
The babies stood in a neat, wiggly line behind her, eyes wide. Kelpie’s mouth dropped open in wonder — he was practically vibrating from tail to ears. Even Lucian, always so serious, looked up at the sparkling water with the smallest flicker of curiosity in his red eyes.
Alina took a deep breath, her smile warm but her teacher voice calm and clear. She pressed her hands together and called out, "Alright, sweethearts! Before we play, Teacher has three very important rules. Ready?"
Tiny heads bobbed up and down, though Boo was upside down, so his nod looked more like a spin.
"One!" She held up her finger, her voice playful but firm. "You cannot go very close to the water without Teacher’s permission. Not even if you think you’re part fish!"
Kelpie’s cheeks turned pink at that, but he giggled and hugged his boat tighter.
"Two — you cannot push, jump, or be silly near the water. No chasing! No surprises! No splashing your teacher!" she said, narrowing her eyes teasingly at Drake, who immediately giggled and hid behind Vlad Jr.
"And three..." she dropped her voice, leaning in with a mock-serious whisper, "you must listen to Teacher’s words at all times. If you do that, everyone will be safe and we’ll have lots of fun, alright?"
"Yes, Teacher!" they chimed together — some louder than others, some mumbling shyly. Boo just floated around in circles, but that probably meant yes too.
Alina placed her hands on her hips, smiling wide.
"Okay then — let’s have fun!" she said brightly, clapping her hands.
Then Alina unlocked her phone and looked at it, thumb hovering over the record button. I have to remember this, she thought, a giggle bubbling in her chest. She lifted the phone and turned the camera on, its tiny light blinking as the screen showed her the best angle — nine little monsters standing in the sun, clutching their precious paper boats like treasure. Then she leaned it against a rock.
The babies stared at the phone with wide eyes, some more curious than others. Kelpie tilted his head, blinking his pretty blue eyes. Mom and Dad use this thing too, he thought.
Sable’s shadow flickered around him, shyly reaching out toward the phone, but he didn’t say a word — just tucked himself behind Rocky, peeking from the dark. Boo, meanwhile, floated closer than anyone else, upside down as usual, his big ghost eyes reflecting the screen like shiny pearls. Hehe! Now Teacher has to watch Boo all the time! he thought mischievously.
Alina caught herself laughing quietly, seeing all their little faces. "Alright, sweethearts! Let’s go to the lake and drift our boats," she said, her voice warm and soft as the breeze. Tiny gasps of excitement rose up at once — chubby tails wagged, small horns twitched, even Lucian’s eyes shone ever so slightly.
They shuffled closer to the water’s edge, the sunlight dancing across the lake’s gentle ripples. Alina bent down and gestured for them to crouch beside her, careful little paws and claws pressing into the soft grass. She placed her own paper boat on the ground — it was a bit wrinkly, but she didn’t care.
"Ready?" she said, glancing around at each tiny face. Drake’s tail thumped like a drum, Luna’s nose twitched as she sniffed the water, and Vlad Jr. held his boat so regally it looked like a royal vessel about to set sail for a vampire kingdom.
She raised her hand. "One... two... three!"
Together, nine little boats — plus one slightly wrinkly teacher boat slipped from their tiny hands and floated gently onto the lake. The boats drifted away, their bright scribbles and colours bobbing like tiny dreams on the glittering water.
