Chapter 49: Chapter 49 Teacher was serious
"Enough," she said, her voice calm but firm. "Both of you — stop. I will talk to you two later."
Drake and Boo both stiffened. Drake’s golden eyes went wide, while Boo’s mouth dropped open in an offended little ’o.’ They knew that tone meant Teacher was serious.
Before they could squeak out an excuse, Alina stood and strode outside. She returned a moment later followed by two staff workers, both older-looking supernaturals.
They walked inside so casually, like a flood of water and half-burned flowers were just another Tuesday problem.
"Clean this up, please," Alina said, massaging her burnt hand gently.
One of the staff gave her a kind nod. "Of course, Miss Hart."
With a soft hum, the staff used their magic powers, a swirl of pale light rose from their hands, lifting the soggy paper bits and drying the puddles in seconds. Tiny glitter pieces floated up and swirled away into nothingness, like little stars vanishing in daylight.
Meanwhile, Luna who was still perched on the desk in her tiny wolf form, let out an annoyed huff as she shook her damp fur. She looked down at one of the staff members with her big yellow-brown eyes and, in her cute growly baby voice, demanded, "Air dry me too."
The staff didn’t even blink. They simply gave a polite little bow and waved their hand over her. A warm, gentle breeze circled Luna, fluffing her fur until it was as poofy and soft as a tiny cloud. She sat there smugly, tail wagging, nose in the air like a little queen.
Rocky, still a boulder in the middle of the room, finally popped back into his shy little boy form once the floor was dry again. He peeked up at Alina with his big eyes, cheeks rosy as he clutched his half-made paper stem like it was priceless.
When the last bit of soggy paper was cleared away and the puddles vanished like they’d never been there, Alina shifted her weight awkwardly. Her skirt was still damp in places, her hair was sticking to her cheek, and her socks squished a little in her shoes. She cleared her throat, cheeks warming.
"Um... excuse me," she said shyly to the older cleaning staff. "Could you... maybe... um... air dry me too?"
The older woman, a round, kind-eyed staff member with faint runes on her wrists, let out a soft chuckle. "Of course, Miss Hart."
She waved her hand, and a swirl of gentle warm air wrapped around Alina. It fluffed her skirt back into shape, lifted the damp hair off her neck, and even warmed her feet a bit. Alina let out a tiny breath of relief, laughing softly. "Thank you so much."
"And the babies too, please," she added quickly. "Just in case they’re still damp."
The older woman laughed again, her voice warm like a grandma’s hum. "Already done. They’re fluffier than ever."
And it was true — Luna’s wolf fur was puffed up like a tiny storm cloud, Drake’s tail was extra fluffy, and Boo’s wispy hair had so much volume it looked like he’d been electrocuted.
Once the desks and chairs were placed neatly back in order, Alina clapped her hands and called gently, "Alright, sweethearts. Everyone, back to your seats."
The babies scrambled to their spots — Lucian still grumbling under his breath about the mess, Rocky hugging the edge of his desk like it might run away again, Kelpie sitting very still and Felix pretending none of this had anything to do with him.
Alina sat down in her own chair at the front, crossing her legs primly.
"Drake. Boo. Come here, please."
The room went quiet. Drake’s eyes widened and he glanced at Boo, who was floating behind his chair like he’d rather disappear into the ceiling.
"Now, please."
They shuffled forward — Drake stomping with his head bowed, Boo drifting like a sulky cloud. They stopped right in front of her desk, fidgeting with their tiny hands.
Alina looked down at both of them, her eyes warm but serious. "Do you know why Teacher called you?"
Drake’s tail flicked nervously behind him, and Boo’s eyes darted to the floor.
"You almost hurt everyone. You fought. You used your powers. And look..." She showed them her palm, still pink where the fire had burned her. "Teacher got hurt too."
Drake’s eyes welled up immediately. Boo’s pouty lip wobbled.
Alina sighed and leaned forward, lowering her voice so only they could hear. "I know you didn’t mean to cause trouble. But you need to think before you act. You must be careful with your powers. Understand?"
Drake sniffled, nodding hard. "I’m sorry," he squeaked, his cheeks so pink they looked like tiny peaches.
Boo crossed his arms again, looking away but he mumbled, "Sorry too."
Alina’s heart softened instantly. She pulled them both gently closer, wrapping her arms around their small shoulders. "Good boys. No more fighting, okay? You can tease each other but no more fire. Or glitter eating."
Drake giggled into her shoulder. Boo just sighed dramatically but didn’t pull away.
When she let them go, they shuffled back to their seats — both looking just a little bit more thoughtful, tails and ghostly wisps calm at last.
And Alina sat back in her chair.
Once Drake and Boo had tiptoed back to their seats, still peeking at each other with guilty little pouts.
Alina sat there for a moment, letting the hush settle in the room.
She looked around classroom, her eyes drifting first to Sable, who was hugging his tiny paper stem against his chest like it was made of gold. His big dark eyes peeked up at her through the curtain of his hair, his small shoulders drooping so much it made her heart ache. He’d worked so hard on that flower... and it had nearly washed away.
Beside him, Rocky was staring at his own crumpled bit of green paper, turning it over in his hands again and again like he was checking that it really had survived. His little cheeks were pink with the effort of not crying, his eyes glossy but determined.
