Chapter 974: Chapter 971: You’re Still Going to Die
The gale swept through again, and at this moment, Bai Huipeng was like an eagle soaring in the sky. The full power of a Level 6 New Human erupted once again, and Nangong Ming hurriedly raised his arms to block!
Crack!
A sound of bones breaking resounded as Nangong Ming’s arms, positioned in front of his chest, were broken by Bai Huipeng’s foot plummeting from high above. Under such immense force, Nangong Ming’s body momentarily turned into a freshly fired cannonball, smashing into the ground at high speed!
As Nangong Ming’s body smashed into the ground, Tang Ye and the others on the surface felt a slight tremor under their feet once again.
"Boy, this is turning upside-down," one of them said.
"If they keep fighting, this might turn into a nuclear explosion site," another added.
The soldiers of the Peace Party at the scene were stunned by the battle between the two powerhouses. The explosive destruction from their casual strikes was enviable. Moreover, such a battle between Level 6 New Humans was indeed rare. Many had only heard of it but had never actually seen it. Today, the battle between Bai Huipeng and the President of the Mercenary Guild, Nangong Ming, was truly an eye-opener for them.
After receiving a few punches and kicks from Bai Huipeng, Nangong Ming had continuously spit out blood.
The more they fought, the more feeble his breath became, but on the contrary, Bai Huipeng grew more vigorous with each punch and kick, each striking like a thousand-tonne hammer. As one gained and the other lost, Nangong Ming quickly lost the ability to retaliate. The wounds he left on Bai Huipeng only seemed to excite him further. In an attempt to conserve energy, he hadn’t fought with wide, sweeping movements like his opponent, who didn’t seem to care how much energy he had left. Each of his attacks was cunning rather than forceful. Because of this, the more he fought, the more tired he became. Compared to the fiery youth, the elderly him was no longer what he used to be.
Just like the words his great-grandfather once said to his younger self.
"Ming, the sky ultimately belongs to the young. I am old now, and in the future, the responsibility of the Nangong Family will still fall on your shoulders," he had said.
Finally, during another collision with Bai Huipeng, his skin couldn’t withstand the opponent’s repeated impacts. As the air currents produced by the collision of Level 6 New Humans seeped into his already decaying body, his clothes were ripped apart by the force, turning into tattered strips. His skin too was torn open like paper, exposing the red muscle tissue — a sight painful even to look at.
In this collision, Bai Huipeng, driven by his passion, finally scattered the last of his opponent’s strength. Nangong Ming fell to the ground like a kite with its string cut, tilting and crashing down. The cement street below him turned into a calm lake surface, and Nangong Ming’s body was a stone that caused splashes as it hit the water.
Bai Huipeng landed on the ground from high above, his feet stamping out a web-like pattern of cracks on the surface.
"You’ve lost," he said, panting heavily. He too bore injuries big and small, but compared to Nangong Ming, he was in far better condition. The latter had completely run out of strength to continue fighting, and his injuries were severe, while Bai Huipeng was just a bit tired aside from being sore all over, and could still fight if necessary.
"Yes, I’ve lost," Nangong Ming flipped over, lying on his back, his hands resting on a pile of broken stones behind him, as if he was soaking in a bathhouse. He grinned at Bai Huipeng.
Bai Huipeng didn’t reply but stepped forward, grabbed Nangong Ming’s neck, and lifted him up before walking towards Tang Ye.
"President, this is the President of the Mercenary Guild," he said to Tang Ye, respectfully releasing Nangong Ming as he approached.
Tang Ye nodded, his gaze then shifting to Nangong Ming. If the earlier Nangong Ming had appeared refined and elegant, now he looked like an old beggar begging by the roadside.
Having just been put down by Bai Huipeng, Nangong Ming immediately rolled over, sat cross-legged, and faced Tang Ye directly.
"So you’re the President of the Mercenary Guild?" Tang Ye leaned slightly forward, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Nangong Ming with an indifferent gaze.
Nangong Ming nodded and said, "I am the President of the Mercenary Guild, Nangong Ming."
"Do you know what situation you’re in now?"
"I know."
"Then why aren’t you afraid?"
"No, everyone is afraid of death."
"You know you are going to die. Do you regret it, regret the things you have done?"
"Are you referring to the Mercenary Guild’s attack on the Peace Party?"
"Yes."
"There’s no regret. I am at peace with it. Whatever I have experienced in life, it is fate, unchangeable by anyone. Even if I regretted it, what use would that be? It would only make myself more miserable."
"So you mean you are prepared for death?"
Nangong Ming did not speak again; he looked up at Bai Huipeng, as if asking him.
"Young friend, don’t forget what you promised me."
Bai Huipeng involuntarily looked at Tang Ye. Nangong Ming’s request also needed his body to remain after his death to be feasible.
But before Bai Huipeng could speak, Tang Ye took the lead, saying, "Old man, rest assured, I despise people who don’t keep their promises, including my subordinates. Whatever he promised you, I will make sure it gets done."
"That eases my mind, but there’s one last thing I want to say, as a last struggle for survival."
"Then speak."
"About the disorder caused by my Mercenary Guild, it wasn’t my doing, but Jin Ye acting on his own."
"But you allowed it." Almost immediately after Nangong Ming finished speaking, Tang Ye responded without a second’s delay.
Nangong Ming was silent for a moment, then replied, "Indeed, I allowed it. I didn’t stop it."
"Then why didn’t you stop it?"
"Ambition."
"Ambition? You’ve lived so long and you still have ambition?"
"It’s not for myself."
"Then for whom?"
"For my descendants, just like my grandfather paved the way on his deathbed before he passed the family responsibilities to me."
"So, you wanted to pave the way for your descendants, even if it meant death for yourself if you failed?"
"At the time, no one does. Everyone harbors a hope of getting lucky. Jin Ye was not just another beast raised in the herders’ circle; had he succeeded, the Central District would have been entirely under control without the Nangong family lifting a finger."
"A well-calculated plan, but that’s what you call fate, right?"
"Exactly, and actually, there’s no need for you to kill me."
"Having lived in seclusion for years, you should know my character. I don’t let any threat to me exist, and when that threat has manifested itself, do you think I would spare you? Even if you weren’t involved, you still have to die."
