Chapter 739: Chapter 735: The Level 6 Zombie Hidden in the Zombie Tide_1
Tang Ye cast his gaze towards the eastern edge of Qinshan Base, in the direction of Hua City. The zombie-defense wall of Qinshan Base had now been built to nearly thirty meters in height. However, standing atop the tallest building of Qinshan base, his gaze could surpass the defensive wall and observe the deteriorating and decaying remnants of civilization.
With the astonishing vision of a Level 6 zombie, his pupils diminished to near pinpoint size. His gaze was as sharp as a sword, crossing the anti-zombie wall of Qinshan Base. The scenes within Hua City could be seen in great detail.
On a street, or more accurately, hundreds of large and small streets, he spotted a dense crowd of zombies. These countless zombies, with their rotting, twisted heads, formed a sea of darkness. This ocean consisted only of black and dark red. One glance was enough to induce an uncontrollable sense of trembling fear.
This surge of zombies poured towards Qinshan Base. These grotesque and terrifying zombies saw the people within Qinshan Base as their food. To them, the defensive wall in front of them was not a hindrance at all. In their eyes, there was only hunger!
Hovering in the sky above Hua City was a fighter jet from the Jinhai United District. The soldiers operating it were pale faces as they watched the scene unfold below.
"This... there’s too many of them."
"What was Commissioner He thinking, why wait until the zombies attacked before taking action? There are so many zombies, even if we kill them all, when will it end? Won’t we be dead tired?"
Gazing at the abnormally large heads below, the soliders felt a tremble run through their bodies. As pilots, they generally didn’t fear heights, but seeing this sight, the thought of a crash would unconsciously pop up in their minds.
The scene of being surrounded by countless zombies, the thought alone was thrilling! The black and dark red of the zombies created an extreme sense of horror.
Beep beep beep!!...
At that moment, a series of rapid, sharp beeping sounds emitted from the life detection device, startling the soldiers on board. Turning their gaze to the display of the anti-life substance detector, they saw the data fluctuating wildly, making their hearts pound. The display finally settled on a six-digit number, causing the soldier’s faces to turn even paler.
"Six... How can this be possible? How can it be a Level 6!"
"There’s a Level 6 zombie down there!"
The soldiers felt cold and goosebumps rise up. Their eyes scanned the horde below, but they couldn’t spot a zombie fitting the description of a Level 6. Were all of the zombies below of a lower level or just short, or hidden within the undead masses so they couldn’t be seen?
They didn’t dare lower their flying height, for fear that lowering their altitude would allow some high-level zombies to climb up. If that happened, their lives would be in danger!
The fighter circled high in the sky for a while, but it was unable to pinpoint the Level 6 zombie. Seemingly broken, the anti-life substance detector continued to display data for the mysterious Level 6 zombie. The situation made the men on board feel their hair stand on end, and they hurriedly returned to Qinshan Base.
After landing, several of their good comrades surrounded them, chattering and laughing about some amusing occurrences. But the newly returned men were far from amused.
"Hey, what’s wrong? Why do you look so disheartened?" teased one of the soldiers.
But one of the recently returned soldiers frowned, glanced around, his face returned some normalcy, then he stammered: "We just now..."
Before he could even utter forth words, his shoulder was nudged. Zhang Lei looked back to see one of his comrades shaking his head. The rules of the United District were strict. Encounters with Level 6 zombies and undead hordes were generally reported only to leadership and kept confidential to avoid sparking panic.
Put plainly, it meant deceiving others. After all, sometimes knowing the enemy only increased one’s fear, stirring unrest and encouraging a flight-over-fight response. In a post-apocalyptic world, loyalty to one another was non-existent!
Upon seeing the warning from his comrades, hesitance flickered in the soldier’s eyes. Then he laughed softly and said, "Alright, let’s not fret about it too much. We’re all comrades here; just don’t go blabbing."
Another also hesitated: "Okay, but remember, everyone here, this stays confidential. If not, we will all die!"
"What’s going on? It’s so secret."
"Now that he’s mentioned it, we’re all hatching curiosity."
The comrades around were curious, their eyes reflecting their anticipation as they awaited the soldier to speak.
The soldier organized his thoughts. With the data from the anti-life substance detector embedded in his mind, his recently regained color drained from his face again.
"Remember, keep it confidential. We’re about to go report to our old leader."
"We know, we know. Hurry up and tell us, what did you guys encounter?"
After checking that no one was paying attention to them, he finally began to speak slowly: "Earlier, while we were conducting reconnaissance over Hua City, we discovered a Level 6 zombie within the horde!"
"What?"
The men were shocked, and quickly clammed up to maintain their secrecy. The area around them grew eerily quiet. The men then hurriedly left without saying a thing else, urgency written on their faces.
Once they had left, the remaining soldiers exchanged a glance, apparently understanding each other. As if nothing had happened, they resumed their chatter. However, their voices held a hint of stiffness, and some of their faces had paled.
After chatting casually for a bit, they began to gather and prepare their formation. Then, they began to head towards Floating Flower Park after receiving some instructions from their superior. It wasn’t long before they had all assembled, but by then, one of them was missing.
"Hey, where’s Zhang Lei?"
"I don’t know."
"Let’s head over first, he told me earlier that he had something to take care of and he’ll come find us."
"Alright then, let’s go."
"Let’s go, let’s go." The group seemed to have forgotten their previous conversation, and headed off to leave the Comprehensive Management Area. On the other hand, the United District soldier named Zhang Lei held his all-purpose combat helmet and looked out at the distant zombie defense wall, fear evident in his eyes.
"Can the wall block this many zombies?"
Unlike other soldiers, Zhang Lei was a veteran through and through. He was a soldier who’d survived the defense against the zombie horde when a C Grade survivor base in D Province fell. After his narrow escape, the original Kunxuan Base became part of the Jinhai Control Zone, and the surviving soldiers of Kunxuan Base became soldiers of the United District. Having experienced that battle, he understood the terror of a zombie horde!
