Chapter 718: Chapter 714: Stop Right There_1

"Hey, I just came back from Li’s Mansion and that Level 6 zombie is something else. The virus on it can infect even the New Humans. Plus, it’s invincible. Did you hear? The Commander tried three times to kill it, but it just wouldn’t die."

"Holy crap! Are you serious?"

"Absolutely! Even after having its head blown to smithereens, it didn’t die. Currently, Li’s Mansion is hastily constructing several steel cages overnight to contain that silver zombie."

A few soldiers were huddled under a telecommunication pole when one of them was about to speak. The soldier in front seemed to spot something and his face froze.

"From the City of Bright Moon... Eh, what’s up with you? Why the long face?"

"Look... Look behind you!"

The soldiers sensed something was off and turned around to look behind, but all they saw were a few cold lights flashing by. All the soldiers were slashed on the neck by a sharp blade, a hand covered their mouth. They all died noiselessly before even making a peep.

"Shush, stay quiet and be discreet," Dai Changhao hushed them, placing a finger over his lips as a signal. Simultaneously, he efficiently dragged all the soldiers’ corpses into the darkness.

"Change into their uniforms; it will help us move through unnoticed."

The three men were powerful New Humans and they swiftly disrobed the dead soldiers. Moments later, the trio emerged from the darkness wearing Qinshan Base military uniforms instead of their Peace Party outfits.

One of the Level 3 New Humans slit a finger off a corpse with a dagger and left all the bodies in an inconspicuous place.

"Let’s go, Little Wu, open the gate."

Dai Changhao beckoned, and the Peace Party member named Little Wu swiftly went forward, holding the severed finger to press upon the access control.

The other two were all engrossed, clutching their Canghe-P90s, ready to tackle any surprises that might spring up.

Yet, to everyone’s surprise, the gate creaked open without any opposition inside. Only a few chatting soldiers glanced at them and then redirected their gaze elsewhere.

Dai Changhao and his men exchanged glances, walked in like nothing had happened. But as they entered, they found the Comprehensive Management Area remarkably desolate today. Hardly any patrolling or guard soldiers were in sight, and a faint smell of blood drifted in the air.

Probably because of yesterday’s Level 6.

The sky seemed somewhat crimson. From a distance, they saw ruins of several buildings.

Confirming that those soldiers were not deliberately watching them, Dai Changhao led men deeper in.

"Just now, those were all ordinary people. Drink the blocking agents so it won’t be difficult to explain if we run into New Humans here."

"Alright."

The three of them took out a tube of medicine from their waists, gulped it down in one shot. Little Wu smacked his lips and scornfully said, "Such a tiny thing, not much effect, but it’s quite expensive."

"Cut the crap and hurry up!"

Another one touched the identity card on his chest and followed Dai Changhao towards Li’s Mansion.

However, they hadn’t got too far when they realized the surroundings looked as if a typhoon had swept through, with choking dust dancing everywhere. Collapsed buildings were visible at every moment.

Trucks drove by occasionally, carrying loads of cement blocks of all kinds. Clearly, these were collected from the destroyed buildings.

"Make way people, the corpse cart is coming."

A large vehicle drove from the front, covered with a blotchy blood-stained white cloth. There were soldiers running alongside on both sides of the vehicle. The soldiers in front waved their hands, signaling people to clear the path.

A spring breeze lifted a corner of the white cloth, revealing the bloody, mangled bodies within. A child’s crying broke out nearby, followed by a mother’s comforting voice.

The consoling voice gradually chocked up into a sob. The mother patted her child’s back as the child called out "Daddy" and then buried their head in their mother’s chest, crying incessantly.

No one knew where these corpses were being transported. A soldier said after the truck had passed, "That makes seventeen."

The three looked at each other, how many people had died?

Those living in the Comprehensive Management Area were either New Humans serving Li Songhua or their relatives. Even though these New Humans often bullied others, the death of their family members was the most innocent.

Instead of going directly to Li’s Mansion under the government building, the three followed the direction from which the corpse cart had come.

As they delved deeper, the atmosphere around them grew more stifling. Trucks carrying debris were becoming more frequent. Gradually, they realized that the trucks were hauling debris from the destroyed buildings.

There were not only trucks disposing of the ruins and transporting corpses but also trucks covered with black cloth carrying mysterious cubic objects.

"What are those?"

"I don’t know."

Intense thuds and suppressed roars were coming from under the black cloth. It seemed as if some monster was locked inside.

Sounded like a zombie’s roar but not quite.

"We’re here, look ahead."

After covering some distance, they saw the road ahead blocked by collapsed buildings. Soldiers on top were manually picking up pieces of rubble and throwing them onto the truck parked upfront.

As far as the eyes could see, the foggy blood-colored sky was filled with broken buildings and wide-spread cries.

The world in front of them looked like a Godzilla-ravaged scene, too painful to look at. Regarding yesterday’s noon incident, they had only heard and not experienced the shocking combat involving powerful adversaries.

"Changhao bro, you’re a Level 4 New Human. Can you gauge the extent of the damage?"

"I can’t, but it’s probably several kilometers."

"Damn, how enormous must that zombie have been to cause such destruction."

"Level 6 power zombie, how kickass do you think that is? Our Chairman, Level 6 New Human, scared the shit out of that bastard Li Songhua."

They wanted to press forward, but a soldier operating a stone-crushing machine on one side shouted at them.

"Hey, you three! Which unit are you from? If you’re not from here, then get the hell away!"

Dai Changhao and his men were taken aback, but instead of leading to a stand-off, they retreated.

"Forget it, let’s finish the mission first, find it and inform the Chairman of its disappearance."

"But how do we find it?"

"Such a powerful thing, if I were Li Songhua, I would either hide it at the most heavily defended location or at a place that no one knows."

"If it’s the former, it’s easy and if it’s the latter... well, let’s first look for the former. Where do you think is the most heavily guarded place in Qinshan Base?"

"Definitely Li’s Mansion. That’s Li Songhua’s nest, after all."

"Then, let’s start from there."

The trio briskly left but were stopped by a man who suddenly appeared in a gathering spot.

"Hey, you three, stop right there!"
