Su Sigui’s words stopped midway, the abrupt break in her sentence almost drove Li Songhua mad, causing the itchiness in his heart similar to that of a kitten’s clawing.

"You’re suggesting not to fight against the zombies? Mayor Su, what’s your plan?"

Su Sigui gave a cryptic smile at him, rose from the sofa, paced around the room, and then casually stated, "I’ve just changed my mind. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Even though your offer means nothing to me, and it would benefit both of us if I help you, I detest freeloaders. So, I want something in return."

Li Songhua’s facial muscles twitched slightly. He knew that Su Sigui wouldn’t be so easy to deal with. She was too cutthroat to let him gain advantage without any effort.

However, Li Songhua suppressed his dissatisfaction and managed to smile sweetly. "What do you want, Mayor Su? As you’ve said, there’s nothing noteworthy in the Qinshan Base for someone as important as you. I, Li will do whatever it takes to make sure you get what you want."

Su Sigui didn’t respond but returned to her seat on the sofa. A faint smile appeared on her face as she stared at the man in the mask, He Jinzhan. Initially, he thought he wouldn’t have anything to do with the matter, but Su Sigui’s penetrating gaze sent chills down his spine, forcing him to turn his attention to her.

"Ma... Mayor Su, is there anything you would like to discuss?"

Su Sigui acted as if she didn’t hear him, instead shifting her attention to the fruits laid out on the table. She scanned the slightly shriveled skins of the fruits where traces of frost could be seen.

The table was clean and tidy, but there were some fruit peels on the floor. It was clear that the fruits had recently been placed on the table and consumed by someone.

Her gaze moved around before settling on a fresh-looking red apple. Su Sigui picked it up, her delicate fingers stroking its skin. Shortly after, she revealed a claw-knife.

"This apple is soft, it reminds me of fresh life. No matter how well it is preserved, everything eventually decays. Everyone fears death, me included. I have skirted along the edge of life and death so many times, so many that I can’t even count. However, these experiences made me realize something. We are not afraid of death itself but the thought of never being able to embrace our loved ones or friends again. There’s no more room for our existence in the world filled with love and hate, joys, and sorrows. We vanish like a gust of wind, or like sand falling from our hands."

The three looked at each other, confused. They couldn’t figure out why Su Sigui would say such things at this time, in this place. It was unnerving, to say the least.

They knew the meanings of the words Su Sigui used, but they were out of place given the context.

In the room, Li Songhua looked at her expectantly, Yang Jiaoyong tensed in nervous anticipation, and He Jinzhan was utterly confused. He could not understand why Su Sigui was staring at him. Upon considering her words, he couldn’t help feeling a chill.

Su Sigui held the hilt of her blade, spun it around nimbly, and started to peel the apple, her movements swift and precise. Less than a minute later, the apple was completely denuded, revealing its white flesh.

"Mmm, tasty."

Su Sigui bit into the apple, her teeth left neat imprints on it. The other three watched her in silence, waiting for her to speak.

However, Li Songhua couldn’t bear the suspense and blurted, "Mayor Su..." But he was quickly interrupted.

"What are you so anxious about?"

Su Sigui shot him a cold glare before cheerfully turning to He Jinzhan.

"Commissioner He, how about we make a trade?"

"What kind of trade?" He Jinzhan became alert.

"Don’t worry, I won’t harm you. I simply want to grant you something."

"Huh?" He Jinzhan became even more alert, his body instinctively backing away.

Despite noticing his bodily reaction, Su Sigui pretended not to. Her faint smile became brighter, completely inconsistent with her usual blood-thirsty, ruthless disposition.

"You seem apprehensive. As a Level 6 New Human, crushing you guys would be effortless. You all mean nothing to me. Killing or sparing you would be a matter of whim. The real threat to me is Li Henian. His Peace Party gives me a sense of unease, so I want to dispose of him!"

"I’ll make my move during the zombie attack on the Qinshan Base, in coordination with Li Songhua. However, this will benefit Li Songhua and I don’t want him to have that advantage. Also, I don’t want anything he owns, so I’ll just give it to you."

"Given everyone present, the most influential is you, Commissioner He. Why should you receive the least after all? Li Henian is a dead man walking as far as I’m concerned. Plus, I’m not interested in his possessions, so I’ll just give them to you. Don’t underestimate the Peace Party, Commissioner He, their stockpile has plenty of Evolution Crystals as far as I know. He Jinzhan’s brow furrowed. What was Su Sigui up to, trying to dump everything on him? Even if she really didn’t want those things, her current extremity was quite suspicious since there was a saying no mosquito is too small to do away with, for it carries meat no matter how little.

"Are you saying that if your plan succeeds, all of the Peace Party’s resources will become mine?"

"Of course." Su Sigui smiled.

He Jinzhan gazed at Su Sigui’s flawless face as his mind raced to understand her motives. No matter how he thought about it, he couldn’t figure out why she was acting this way. Was it all purely to give him these things?

He Jinzhan was no stubborn fool. If he couldn’t figure things out from one angle, he’d try another, and another, until he reached a conclusion. Quickly enough, he figured out some of Su Sigui’s intentions.

Why give the benefits to him and not others? That was worth pondering.

"Is she trying to win me over? That makes sense; many people dream of clinging onto my coattails as one of the seven commissioners of the United District. It seems that even Mayor Su, a Level 6 New Human, is one of those people. After all, in this post-apocalyptic world, one person alone cannot stand."

Upon this realization, He Jinzhan’s gloominess disappeared, giving way to laughter. He couldn’t help fantasizing about the beautiful Level 6 New Human nestled in his arms, ready for him to feast his eyes upon.

However, he had no idea that he was falling into a trap!
