Chapter 623: Chapter 621: If I Don’t Kill You, I’ll Let Myself Down _1
With a "splat," the enormous body of the zombie tiger split in half, entrails slop across the ground. Tang Ye didn’t even blink. He smoothly lifted a hand, tendrils of black fog sweeping out and consuming the evolution crystal from the tiger’s skull. He tossed it into his mouth without a second look.
Watching the zombie tiger be sliced apart so easily, the woman’s face paled. Lifting her hands, she again activated her ability. Her fingers moved rhythmically, as if dancing.
A mysterious psychic energy swirled between Tang Ye and the surrounding zombies. Even at this late stage, she clung to the idea of controlling all that surrounded her.
Though she held little hope of controlling Tang Ye, she had to at least give it a shot.
Hundreds of high-level zombies around the woman roared in unison, brandishing their weapons while charging towards Tang Ye.
"Whether I could stop you, I have to give it a go," she murmured to herself. She turned and darted away. Zombies of all sorts swarmed from every direction in a bid to block Tang Ye’s path.
Unfazed, he raised his left hand, his palm transforming into a curved blade made of flesh and blood. Wielding the double blades, Tang Ye’s eyes flashed with a bloodthirsty glint. He bolted into the horde of zombies, hacking and slashing as if he were a whirlwind of death.
The commotion captured the attention of Bai Xinran, who had been waiting on the sidelines for her doom. Upon seeing the empty space before her, she cautiously turned to the tumult behind her.
The terrifying sight that met her almost made her faint.
The once mighty Level 5 zombie tiger was now nothing but oozing halves, organs splattered everywhere. Even the surrounding buildings were stained with its blood. The smell was unbearable.
Surprised and disgusted, Bai Xinran tentatively touched her back to find it drenched with the tiger’s blood. Seeing the white-haired zombie she called ’Brother Henian’ still rampaging among the other zombies was even more terrifying.
The two blades, transformed from his hands, whirled about like a deadly dance, decapitating the zombies with murderous efficiency. To the survivors, every one of these zombies was a horrifying threat. But here, they fell under his blades like weeds under a scythe.
Within seconds, Tang Ye managed to drive back hundreds of high-level zombies and then bypass them to pursue the fleeing woman. His eyes were practically brimming with the intent to kill.
Behind him, a group of high-level zombies chased after Tang Ye, their roars echoing ominously.
Bai Xinran finally decided it was her time to run. She got up and sprinted in the opposite direction. But before she could make much headway, she saw a horde of zombies pouring into the street in front of her.
They were the same zombies that had swarmed down off the freeway bridge and spread across the city.
Shocked, Bai Xinran glanced forward and then back. Desperate, she could only run in the direction of Tang Ye.
Thus began the high-stakes chase – Tang Ye hot on the heels of the woman in human skin, a swarm of high-level zombies chasing after him, and Bai Xinran trailing after the pack of zombies.
Tang Ye spared a look over his shoulder and saw Bai Xinran being pursued by the zombie horde. He was nearly infuriated to death. Fortunately, these zombies were not under the control of the clever zombie woman and most of them were low-level, so Bai Xinran would not die too soon.
The woman was sprinting with all her might. But she was not a Speed Type Zombie. Besides her powerful controlling ability, her strength and speed were on the same level as Xu Haishui’s, only slightly higher than a Level 3 zombie. How could she possibly outrun Tang Ye?
Even though her control over high-level zombies bought her a few seconds, it did not take Tang Ye even half a minute to catch up.
Their chase led them back to the banks of Qulong River, zigzagging through the streets of the city.
Fifty meters...
Twenty meters...
Ten meters...
The closer Tang Ye got, the more panicked she felt. A sense of impending doom she had never experienced before began to engulf her.
Suddenly, she noticed something. She gazed at the steel-grey surface of the Qulong River and froze.
"There’s something in there!"
She let out a scream. Her perception was rather strong, stronger even than Tang Ye’s. She could sense that something powerful was emerging from the Qulong River.
"Stop chasing!"
She cried out in desperation, yet her escape didn’t slow. Tang Ye disdained her, thinking that she was attempting to trick him.
Nonetheless, he cast a glance towards the Qulong River. The sight that met his eyes made him alert.
A murky point appeared in the center of the river behind Tang Ye, slowly expanding like spreading oil, making the otherwise clear water turn cloudy.
"What is that thing?"
Unnoticed, Tang Ye slowed his pace, allowing the woman to gain a moment of distance. Tang Ye let his anger take control, transforming a hand into numerous tentacles which deftly grabbed her shoulder, then yanked her towards him.
"Don’t you get it? Look at the river!"
"I believe you, my ***!"
Incredulous, Tang Ye continued to tug, his feet planted firmly. Heedless of her protests, he steadily reeled her in.
Suddenly, a gurgling sound echoed from the river behind them. Without thinking, Tang Ye turned to look, only to be stunned by what he saw.
The murky spot in the middle of the river had already contaminated a section of the Qulong River and was still spreading rapidly.
"There’s something in there. We need to leave, or we’ll both die!"
Seizing the moment of Tang Ye’s distraction, the woman broke off a limb from her back and launched it forward. She caught it with a skilled hand.
Clutching the knife-like limb, she fiercely hacked at Tang Ye’s tentacles!
With a squelch, Tang Ye’s tentacle was severed. He squinted at the woman’s blade and found it strangely familiar.
It suddenly hit him. The blade was identical to the one Xu Haishui had picked up at the sabotaged highway junction when he was transporting the survivors from Shiwuguan Base to Qinshan Base.
"So it was you."
With a jolt of understanding, Tang Ye watched the woman sprint away, struggling to tear off the remaining tentacle still attached to her back.
However, no matter how hard she tried, the tentacle stayed stuck in her.
Revitalizing his energy, Tang Ye sprinted after her. But before he could close the gap between them, the situation took a turn. The banks of the Qulong River started to undulate, followed by a series of thunderous rumblings.
"Is it an earthquake?"
Tang Ye stood stunned for a moment before noticing the ground beneath his feet giving way. Looking down, he saw the asphalt cracking. The choppy waters of the river boiled and frothed as if it had been set on fire. The docks fell into the water, followed by the road. The zombies on the streets didn’t manage to evade in time and fell into the water with a splash.
Tang Ye shot a quick glance at Bai Xinran. She was running and carefully stepping over a crack across the street. But he could no longer afford to worry for her.
"Are you still chasing me?" The woman behind him saw that Tang Ye was still in pursuit and snapped at him indignantly.
"Even the thought of letting you escape makes me indignant!"
