Chapter 598: Chapter 595: The Hiding Place_1

Disgusting! Disgusting! Incredibly disgusting!

Zhao Yi had never felt so sick in his life. This was his first post-apocalyptic experience of disgust. The scene made him uncomfortable, suddenly reminding him of a foreign horror animation he had seen as a kid, "Rotten Metropolis."

That was his childhood nightmare. The plot revolved around a zombie outbreak, delivered in a deeply disturbing animation style. Since the end of the world, there had been a few instances of fear. Now, the terror had returned. The situation he was in was all too similar to that of the animation he once saw.

A car exploded nearby. A new human, fighting against a high-level zombie with an H-steel weapon, was blown away by the explosion. The zombie took advantage of the confusion to attack. He quickly raised his blade to block the assault. The corpse’s claw collided with the knife, causing the weapon, his companion for a long time, to fracture and splinter. The fragments flew among the crowd, one of them slicing open Zhao Yi’s hand. Blood flowed out.

"Damn it all...run!"

He began to curse the heavens in his heart, showing no regard for the wound on his hand. He just pulled out the larger fragments and left the smaller ones in the wound. Gathering all his strength, he dashed like a bolt of lightning toward his son’s house. He didn’t notice a zombie ridden with tumorous growths glance at him, its tumors suddenly bursting open, spewing masses of black fluid everywhere.

One of these masses hit the ground. The fleeing survivors took a quick glance and their scalps began to tingle in horror. It wasn’t a fluid at all, but many tiny bugs huddled together!

"Damn it! It’s an infector!" a veteran survivor shrieked in horror. They, who often roamed outside searching for supplies, recognized this type of zombie. The bugs it exploded out could parasitically infect and control humans!

It could not only infect ordinary humans but New Humans as well. One of the masses had fallen near Zhao Yi’s foot unnoticed. After taking a quick look around, he ran up the stairs.

An inconspicuous infection bug crawled up from his shoe and burrowed into his calf. Everything happened without making a sound, and Zhao Yi felt no pain at all.

He arrived at his home door, panting with fatigue. Even as a Level 4 New Human, he couldn’t help but be winded after running for so long. After resting for a moment, he unlocked the door to find his son listlessly sitting by the window, his face filled with terror from the scene below.

"Dad!"

Thump!

The toy in his hand was thrown aside. The moment his son saw Zhao Yi, he rushed into his father’s embrace.

Zhao sighed with relief. The long spear in his hands clattered to the ground as he relaxed.

"Don’t worry, I’m here now," he comforted his son.

"Dad, there are more of those monsters outside!"

"Don’t worry. I’m strong now, strong enough to fight them."

"Hmmm."

Listening to his son hum in agreement, Zhao Yi’s thoughts raced. He had dreaded coming home to find the door broken. The spread of the zombie horde wasn’t that fast yet. After finding his son, he began to make plans in his mind.

"Dad, you’re hurt."

Zhao Yi’s eyes filled with gratitude as his son noticed the wound on his hand. "I’m fine," he replied with a light-hearted laugh. His son loved him reciprocally and helped tend to his wound.

Argh!

Suddenly, the son let out a scream. The H-steel weapon was too sharp, casually cutting a gashing wound into his son’s small hand. Zhao Yi panicked, quickly stopping him and rushing into another room to treat their wounds.

Upon concluding these tasks, Zhao Yi closed the door. Lighting a cigarette, he watched the chaos on the street below from the window.

"All the air transport or tactical vehicles have been taken by that bastard Zhang Jinlong. Escaping Gaozheng Base is not realistic. With 1.2 million zombies, what are we to do?"

Zhao Yi sank into deep thought. As a major city in Province G, Fengming City naturally occupied a large area. Hence, establishing a single shelter wasn’t enough to accommodate its massive population. According to the emergency safety protocols enacted after the post-apocalyptic outbreak, Fengming City became one of the few cities with dual bases: Gaozheng and Gaorong.

The Gaorong Base in the East City had fallen 52 hours ago. Now, the zombies attacking the city were primarily stronger zombies, having returned from attacking the Gaorong Base.

Moreover, under this peculiar situation from the North, even if Zhao Yi managed to escape Gaozheng Base with his son, the zombies would still be able to find them. Somehow, the zombies’ senses were augmented, allowing them to locate humans!

Upon escaping Gaozheng Base, Zhao Yi would face endless pursuit from the zombies!

Therefore, escaping the Gaozheng Base was an idea that Zhao Yi had immediately rejected. Since he couldn’t flee, the only two options left were to fight or to hide. However, the former seemed suicidal. He, as a Level 4 New Human, might not be able to kill 50,000 regular zombies, let alone the evolved ones!

So just the option of hiding was left, which seemed feasible but would require finding an ultra-secure location stocked with enough food.

It’s not that the place must be hidden from the zombies, but rather that it must have solid defense mechanisms!

Only such a place, which met both the criteria of having enough food and being secure, could be used as a shelter.

Where could that be?

Zhao Yi exhaled a large cloud of smoke, his eyes flashing with resolve. That place!

Not only would it have sufficient food supply, and a steel wall to resist zombies, but it also had a communication device to contact the outside world!

It was the command center in the heart of Gaozheng Base!

"Have you packed everything?"

"I’ve packed it!"

The sound of a child’s voice echoed from a room. Zhao Yi walked in, scolding his son for trying to bring toys and packing all the food from home into a bag. He loaded a gun and handed it to his son before leading him out the door.

"Son, let your dad carry you."

Zhao Yi forced his spear into a zombie’s brain, causing black blood to explode out. A backpack slung over his shoulder, he reached over with one hand and scooped up his son. The softened expression in his eyes immediately hardened.

His son held the gun nervously. Unable to hide the fear in his eyes, he again encountered the human-eating zombies after four years. A terrifying scene played in his mind, vividly remembering the moment when his mother was devoured by zombies. He uttered a horrified cry and closed his eyes in fear.

Compared to when Zhao Yi came, the situation on the street was now even more chaotic. By his estimation, zombies likely made up two-thirds of the population.
