Chapter 550: Chapter 547: Evil Spirit Zombie_1
"No good, there’s a ghost ahead of us!" a man in the car shouted, his voice trembling slightly, but he didn’t seem to be afraid.
"Relax, keep going, we didn’t see them." After a while, a more steady man’s voice came out.
This street is home to very mysterious creatures, seemingly invisible. People can see them, but viewing them results in disaster!
"What on earth is out there, why..." Qiongli tightened her grip around Nannan, while Bai Xinran also curled up beside her.
Two months ago, Qiongli’s mysterious Nokia ran out of battery and she had no idea where her husband was. Their original plan was to cross over the Chengda Bridge next door, but the bridge had been blown up. They had no choice but to find another way, ultimately leading them to this city.
When they first arrived, the group was happy. After some journey, their team took in many wanderers they met in other places. When they heard that their destination was Chenyang 169 Base, they decided to go together.
Even though there were many bad people among them, under the might of Li Henian, they were well-controlled. This city was unlike any city before, it was very much like Lin City on the eve of the nuclear explosion, not a single zombie could be seen.
Even though the convenience store on the street was covered in dust, it was filled with food. At first, people were delighted and desired to stay and live there. They thought a worry-free life here would be far better than subjecting themselves to the upper management at the Chenyang base.
However, only a few people felt something was wrong. If this place was safe, why wasn’t there a single person around? Yet, only a small portion of goods had been taken from the convenience stores, unlike in other cities where everything had been looted by survivors despite zombies roaming around.
But those who sensed the peculiarity were far too few. Majority were fostering a mentality of blind hope, especially those who followed from the start. Their character had been tormented by hunger to the point that they no longer acted like humans. They pounced at the sight of food, like famished wolves spotting sheep.
Qiongli had a keen sense, upon arriving here, she noticed an unprecedentedly serious expression on Li Henian’s usually absent-minded or indifferent face.
Sure enough, not long after entering Jinhe City, people began to see some things which they shouldn’t. Then their bodies would become pieces of meat, as if torn apart by someone. What’s more terrifying is, these pieces of meat would slowly disappear!
People were confused and looked around recklessly, which caused more deaths. All those who saw those things died! Qiongli was an exception. She was looking around too and she did catch a glimpse of that creature. It was very blurry, almost three meters tall, very slim and had a long shape, just a white shadow with a pair of dead fish-like eyes. She saw it rushing towards her.
However, there are always exceptions. In the nick of time, Li Henian saved her and instructed her to leave quickly. Qiongli discovered that you shouldn’t look at these things and so she ran away with Bai Xinran and Nannan, their eyes covered. Afterwards, they were rescued by a group of survivors.
They referred to these creatures as ghosts! They were a bizarre type of zombies, lying between the material and energy, which could be seen yet could not be seen. These survivors would cover their eyes with thick cloth before going out and seek supplies by relying on their hearing and perception.
There was no way to distinguish any levels among these creatures. Even members of the New Human Generation would be killed upon seeing them! The survivors living in Jinhe City had no idea how to cope with them. The only thing they knew was, these zombies were not like those in other areas. They were like shy ghosts. They didn’t permit anyone to see them. If they were spotted, they would kill whoever saw them!
As long as you didn’t gaze at them, you could do anything. You could freely stroll on the streets, shout the name of your beloved loudly, but you could not look at them, not even if they were zombies!
With the help of Li Henian, Qiongli, Bai Xinran, and Nannan managed to escape from these "ghosts". However, they got separated from Li Henian and haven’t seen him for a week now.
"Aunt Qiongli, did that brother die?" Bai Xinran tugged at Qiongli’s sleeve, her emaciated and trembling body hidden under ragged school uniform. Following the disappearance of Li Henian, they couldn’t help but feel insecure, as if they had lost their protective umbrella and didn’t feel safe anywhere.
"No, he will be blessed by God..."
Qiongli comforted Bai Xinran, yet her voice lacked conviction. How strong was Li Henian? She didn’t know, but the fact that such a person was caught up was enough to know how difficult it was to deal with these "ghosts"!
After being saved by these survivors, the three of them were kept in a small dark room. There were a total of fourteen people, but they didn’t have much food. The man who saved them seemed to be scolded by the boss for bringing them. However, the boss appeared to be a good person. Even though he was furious at his men for recklessly rescuing people, he didn’t make matters worse for them, just kept them locked up and hungry, doing nothing.
Because after these three were rescued, they couldn’t possibly be killed out of food scarcity, right? If they were saved only to be killed later, it would be a meaningless rescue. They might as well have them join in their efforts to find supplies. Therefore, the boss still took them in. Today was the first time Qiongli and her group went out.
This was their first time seeing such a way of going out. All the glass on the car was painted black or white, creating an absolutely enclosed space to ensure that they didn’t see the creatures outside.
As for how the car moved, it relied on the anti-collision system providing prompts inside the car.
"It’s been said, there are ghosts outside. Under certain circumstances, you might see them, like when you’re doing something and suddenly catch a white shadow out of the corner of your eye. But when you look carefully, there’s nothing. That’s the situation. These creatures are probably becoming more noticeable. They’re invisible, but on the other hand, they’re not. Just now, we hit one with the car. Not sure if it’s dead or not, let’s go quickly.
An energetic old man in his fifties provided a vague explanation of these things while sitting in the co-passenger’s seat. Qiongli and the others listened, utterly baffled.
What does it mean to be able to see them, but they are also invisible, and seeing them means death?
However, since this old man couldn’t explain clearly, it indicated he didn’t understand the truth or principle of these creatures and why they behave this way.
Whether Qiongli or Bai Xinran, their greatest hope now is that Li Henian safely returns to their side. Only then would they feel some semblance of security.
