Chapter 1686: Chapter 1680: Supporting Character

Ghost Head, noticing Brother Shi’s unusual expression, stood up from the ground, came to his side, and saw the compass indicator spinning wildly.

"What’s going on?"

"What’s up?"

"The needle above is spinning a bit too violently."

"Maybe the magnetic field around has been changed by some unknown reason."

"Alright, I hope it’s not a sign of some bad event."

Brother Shi shook his head, threw the compass aside, and sat back down. They stopped talking and earnestly began to rest.

As the air gradually quieted down, they began to hear some strange noises.

Beep, beep beep, beep, beep beep...

Beep~

"Hey? Did you hear any strange sounds?"

"I heard it..."

"Shh..."

Forcing down their pounding hearts, they concentrated on listening. The sound was so faint at first that they thought it was auditory hallucinations, not clear at all. But the increasingly quiet environment allowed them to clearly hear the "beep-beep," confirming its existence!

Very familiar, it should be a sound they often hear, seemingly coming from the higher floors.

"What is that sound coming from?"

"It should be from the anti-life substance detector."

"Be careful, it’s sounding so frequently, there might be a nasty thing up the floors."

Brother Shi waved his hand, and the group immediately stopped resting, picked up their weapons, and advanced to the upper floors. As they climbed higher along the stairs, the "beep-beep" sound grew clearer. Upon reaching the twenty-seventh floor, Yong felt something abruptly and turned to look at the window below the stairwell, gazing at the world outside through the glass.

"What’s wrong?"

Of course, Yong’s sudden action caught Ghost Head and the others’ attention. Brother Shi asked skeptically, but Yong just shook his head, saying nothing, seemingly contemplating something. They didn’t pay much heed.

"Let’s keep moving."

The three headed towards the stairs again, but halfway up, Ghost Head noticed Yong hadn’t kept up, quickly tapping Brother Shi.

"What’s up?"

"Look?"

The three of them turned to Yong again, who was still standing there, pondering as he looked out the window.

"Hey!"

"Yong!"

"Hmm?" Yong was snapped back to reality by their calls.

"Quick, catch up!"

"Okay." He took one last glance at the world outside the window, withdrew his gaze completely, and followed up, moving towards the thirty-second floor. However, the three were unaware that at one end of Sanctuary City, several mechas were being frantically dismantled by zombies. A Level 8 New Human lay buried among the zombie tide, leaving only one alive among the Level 8 New Humans accompanying Huang Fuguang. His abdomen was pierced with five glaring blood holes, his body was nearly cleaved in half by sharp blades evolved from the high-level zombies. Yet the fierce vitality of a high-level New Human kept him standing, his blade full of dents, his hands having crushed countless zombie heads. He was utterly exhausted but persisted, punching and slashing, his initial avalanche-like destruction power waning, his breath barely felt. At this moment, he forgot he was once a contemptible worm who abandoned his dignity for survival!

Only knowing that he had a mission, to persevere until... until Yang Xiangfeng appeared!

But things rarely go as planned. As his severely damaged zombie-slaying blade cleaved a zombie’s head, its innate cracks could no longer support the blade’s structure, collapsing completely. This scene was like a weak candle flame snuffed out quietly by a gentle breeze!

Mighty as a Level 8 New Human, he also weakly collapsed; in his eyes, the zombie tide remained boundless, endless to kill!

"I... I tried my best... I am proud... just... just wondering... whether my name can be... remembered... sorry..."

As the zombie tide neared, he watched his subordinates being torn to pieces by the tide, a stream of clear tears flowed from his eyes, taking away some dirt from his face, stained red by blood, dripping to the ground. He had one last bit of energy left, but he didn’t want to use it for the next punch. His adrenal gland had ceased its surge, leaving him with overwhelming exhaustion, his fighting spirit quickly worn out by fatigue. He wanted to save this last bit for himself!

He lit a cigarette, took out the "Destroyer" he had secretly kept on his body, and looking at the zombie tide, pulled it open slowly. Then he took a deep breath, exhaling a plume of smoke, granting his mind a moment of peace.

"Is this my end?... Not too bad... Dad... Mom... I should be on my way, goodbye..."

Saying in his heart what he wanted to say, the power contained within the "Destroyer" was unleashed, he felt the scorching temperature, his consciousness becoming blurry. In a daze, he saw the anti-zombie wall pushed down, many, many silver armored zombies entering Sanctuary City crashing toward the Hypnotic Zombie tide. But the appearance of fire blocked his vision, plunging his consciousness into darkness.

"What happened?"

"Silver...Silver armored zombies! It’s a silver armored zombie tide!"

"Run!"

"Wait!"

"Their target isn’t us, it’s the Hypnotic Zombie tide!"

"Are those all Level 8... Silver armored zombies?"

"Retreat! Withdraw! Everyone, retreat!"

"From now on, everyone, you have only one task!"

"And that’s! To survive and escape Sanctuary City!"

"Disband!"

The pushed-down anti-zombie wall revealed the outside world to them, a boundless silver zombie tide. One silver giant after another towering among the tide, marching with the corpses’ roar as a military cadence, advancing toward this battlefield!

At the moment the silver armored zombie tide collided with the Hypnotic Zombie tide, the battle between humans and zombies transformed into a contest between zombie tides!

Unmoved by the disband order, the soldiers surveyed the scarred streets, the wreckage of mechas, piles of blood and rotten flesh, feeling the warm, putrid air, remaining silent.

In the river of time, generations of dynasties rise and fall, laws and morality established and continuously perfected, each moment starring them! Their race has created countless miracles, this civilization is unique, unprecedented, its course marked by footprints, even those with astonishing imagination cannot encompass it all. They ought to be proud, and feel honored for the civilization’s past.

But now, their hearts bear only desolation, until they realize that the term ’human’ has unwittingly become a supporting role.
