Chapter 1684: Chapter 1678: A Mundane Life Needs Excitement
"Alright, hurry up and leave!"
Huang Fuguang couldn’t be bothered to look at their behavior. Perhaps it seemed like they were reenacting human warmth in this place. On the opposite side, the dancer taunted them by moving slowly. He hated it. He remembered once acting similarly with enemies performing a tragicomedy in despair. This time, his role was different, and he hated this atmosphere!
"Yes!"
Seeing the dancer approaching, they dared not waste any more time. Wu Zhixiong restarted the Scavenger and retreated.
"Then we are leaving!"
"Go! Move quickly! I’ll hold off this guy!"
Huang Fuguang impatiently waved for them to go and urged them once more. They stopped talking, fully focused on retreating. Suddenly, Huang Fuguang said, "Wait a minute?"
"What’s the matter?"
"If you meet Yang Xiangfeng, please tell him for me... the person who once despised him now genuinely admires him."
"Yes!" Brother Shi loudly responded, and upon hearing his voice, a rare smile appeared on Huang Fuguang’s face. He watched as Wu Zhixiong continued driving the Scavenger, reversing and then changing directions at a corner, eventually disappearing from his sight.
"You all, make sure to get out alive..."
After murmuring, he turned around, muscles tightening once more, and blood poured from wounds on his skin. His last task was now to stop this zombie, at least until he turned into a silver-armored corpse!
On the other side, the Scavenger kept crushing zombies as it advanced. The engine’s noise constantly drew in surrounding zombies. Fortunately, with Yong’s help, he wasn’t being subtle, and his weapon blazed at full power, lasers sweeping and taking away swathes of zombies in moments. Wu Zhixiong was amazed that Yong could withstand the recoil from Tianguang at such high output, but Ghost Head and Brother Shi offered no explanation, so he kept his curiosity in check and focused on driving.
As they distanced themselves from the area of Huang Fuguang’s battle with the dancer, silence filled the cockpit. Huang Fuguang was right; the center of the Sanctuary City wasn’t teeming with zombies, and soon their numbers dwindled. Finally, Wu Zhixiong asked, "Are we going to get that list?"
Hearing his question, Brother Shi and Ghost Head exchanged a glance. They had indeed been moved by Huang Fuguang, but now, thinking it over calmly, they realized.
This was probably Huang Fuguang’s task—to leave the Sanctuary City with the list and make it public. But he had been infected by the silver-armored corpse. Even if he managed to leave with the list, he’d ultimately become a silver-armored corpse himself! So, he hadn’t saved them and given them an opportunity to escape; rather, it was Huang Fuguang who needed their help!
The look in his eyes earlier, perhaps he already knew they would encounter the dancer!
They could completely ignore the list and escape the Sanctuary City faster with the Flaming Bird aircraft, but that would be too heartless. After all, Huang Fuguang did save them; without him, they’d have died under the dancer’s giant sword!
Exchanging their lives for a task—how could that not be worth it?
Yet, the post-apocalyptic world is inherently cruel. It’s become commonplace to turn the blade on those who once saved you, just for personal survival. When the apocalypse hit, the moral compass of human civilization reverted to a primitive state. They were used to this society; prior to this, any guilty acts carried no psychological burden, as it was expected during the apocalypse. But now, they felt a pang of conscience, a moral accusation.
"Get it, why not get it..."
"Huh? Are you sure? We could actually... Well, okay, I suppose I should respect your choice. I’d like to know the reason." The Scavenger paused but soon restarted.
"The reason..." Brother Shi glanced at Ghost Head, who nodded for him to continue.
"Have you ever wondered why we came back despite having deserted?"
"Uh... Yeah, I didn’t think much at first; I thought you were caught back. Did you return voluntarily?"
"Sort of."
"Okay... so, what’s the story?"
"Do you know Luo Zhenfeng?"
"Luo Zhenfeng..." Wu Zhixiong furrowed his brow, pondering, and quickly recalling the name and related deeds from past memories.
"I know. Wait, you also have the last name Luo. What’s he to you?"
"He’s my brother, my own brother. On the way to White Wing, I heard of his death. You know, he could have left with me, but he chose to play hero. I thought he was brainwashed, living well but pursuing death... Now I seem to understand a bit. The significance of existence isn’t merely living; one needs to do things to prove their worth, haha..."
"When I learned of his death, it felt... well, just... like I owed him something... The guilt... made me loathe myself. My brother seemed to have done everything, yet achieved nothing, making a valuable choice with a meaningless result. Perhaps I want to help him complete what he couldn’t... That’s the best I can explain it. I hope you understand, you must know the feeling of losing family, it’s like that..."
"Hearing you, I think I can relate. Everyone has impulsive moments." Wu Zhixiong glanced at Brother Shi, then at Ghost Head. The two were companions; Brother Shi likely acted out of grief for family, so did Ghost Head have a similar reason?
Reading his look, Ghost Head smiled, "Don’t look at me like that. I’m different; I’ve been alone for a long time, no kin around. But seeing this kid cry made me think a lot, realizing my life was too dull, wanting some excitement... Ended up proving that saying, without strength, the road isn’t easy. Here I am, unable to do anything, ultimately choosing a disgraceful retreat. Honestly, I refuse to accept this!"
"While I can’t partake in the too-difficult endeavors, this task is within our capabilities. Plus, we’re still soldiers. Ignoring it would truly betray our previous impulsive decision."
Ghost Head waved his hand casually, finishing his thought, as Wu Zhixiong heavily patted the control panel and shouted, "Alright, old Wu will spend extra time with you today to complete this task!"
"Hahaha!"
