I Am Not Goblin Slayer
Chapter 7: Adventure Squad

The Adventurers Guild in Grayrock Town was a three-story stone building.

Walking straight along the main street of the town to the end, the building painted in bright red across the square was the guild’s headquarters.

Above the pointed porch, the flag bearing the sword, shield, and staff symbolizing the Adventurers Guild fluttered in the wind, with adventurers constantly coming in and out below.

Having been in town for over a year, Gauss had never stepped inside. At most, he had sneakily glanced inside a few times when passing by the entrance.

The reason the original Gauss didn’t dare go in wasn’t because the Adventurers Guild restricted visitors but simply due to his own inferiority complex.

He always felt that only powerful adventurers and professionals could step inside, and casually entering might invite questioning or strange looks from others.

Under the watchful eyes of two guards clad in elite light armor standing at the entrance, Gauss walked in calmly just like the other adventurers.

The first floor was a public hall, similar to the service halls of social public institutions in Gauss’s previous life.

Inside the hall, it was crowded with people. Groups of three to five adventurers carrying various weapons and armor were chatting and exchanging information.

“There aren’t any decent commissions today, huh?”

“The last time I hacked that gnoll, my sword got dulled. The commission money I earned wasn’t even enough to repair it. Big loss.”

“Goblin creatures may look weak, but once they number more than three, it’s a completely different matter. You must be careful.”

“……”

Gauss turned his head, observing the hall’s environment.

He even saw several non-pure human beings, such as half-orcs, gnomes, and dwarves, though humans were the majority of adventurers.

Pulling his gaze away from the crowd, he looked around the surrounding facilities.

The consultation desk curved in a semicircle around the hall, where several receptionists sat.

Besides the consultation counters, various mission information was posted on bulletin boards on the surrounding walls.

“Common material-type mission: Submit Slime Cores obtained from Slime monsters. Mission reward: 3 silver coins per 5 Slime Cores. This mission is permanently available.”

“Common material-type mission: Blood-toothed Fern. The plant must be kept alive when submitting the mission. Reward: 50 copper coins per plant.”

“……”

The walls were plastered with mission notices, dazzling Gauss’s eyes. So he chose to head straight to the front desk to inquire about mission acceptance procedures and requirements.

The receptionist was a young lady with a sweet appearance, standing upright behind the counter.

“Hello, I’m Petra, receptionist, employee ID E21051. How may I assist you?” she greeted energetically, her smile just right, clearly well-trained.

“It’s my first time here. May I ask what requirements there are to accept missions?”

“A rookie adventurer? Then you need to register first as an individual adventurer. Oh, and…”

“The registration fee is 1 silver coin. Is that acceptable to you?”

“Yes.” Gauss took a silver coin out of his pocket, secretly relieved. He had sold a goblin pendant a few days ago; otherwise, he wouldn’t even have been able to afford this registration fee, which would have been embarrassing.

“Okay, then please fill out this adventurer registration form.”

“Thank you.” Gauss took the form Petra handed over and quickly scanned it.

Besides name, age, basic physical information, and permanent address, it also required him to list his proficient weapons or skills.

After truthfully completing the form, Gauss handed it back to the receptionist.

“I will register you now.”

She quickly operated on the computer under the counter with both hands. Within a few seconds, she took out a white badge.

“This is your personal adventurer identity and adventurer rank proof. You need to show this badge when accepting or submitting missions. Please keep it safe. If lost, it will cost 1 silver coin to remake.”

Gauss took it and flipped it over to look closely. This diamond-shaped badge was made of a white metal, with intricate plant patterns engraved on the surface. The craftsmanship was quite fine.

“Miss Petra, I want to accept some combat missions about goblins, preferably with fewer monsters.” After completing the procedure, Gauss got straight to the point.

He continued focusing on goblins mainly because they were the most common low-level monsters, and secondly, out of habit, since he had already killed one goblin. He felt more confident facing them again.

He hadn’t fought other monsters yet, and just judging by the name, he wasn’t sure how strong they were.

“Goblins? Let me see.” The receptionist thought for a moment and pointed Gauss to a wall.

“There are some goblin-related commissions posted on that wall, but the numbers mostly run into double digits or more. If the number is too small, villagers generally won’t pay a commission to post the mission.”

Petra’s implication was that too few goblins posed no immediate threat to the village, so no such missions were issued.

After thanking the receptionist, Gauss went to the area she pointed out.

Sure enough, that wall was covered with many combat commissions, and the goblin missions were thoughtfully posted in an adjacent section.

[Common Bounty Mission]

Reward: 10 silver coins.

Description: The sheepfold in Stoneclaw Village was attacked by a group of goblins. Please help the villagers kill the goblin group lurking near the village. The number of goblins is about 10–15.

Submission item: Complete left ear of a goblin.

Mission duration: 5 days.

[Common Bounty Mission]

Reward: 50 copper coins per goblin.

Description: Assist the guards in clearing and killing goblins wandering from town towards the main road of the Emerald Forest. This mission is permanently available.

Submission item: Complete left ear of a goblin.

Mission duration: permanent

……

There were quite a few goblin missions.

This was natural since, as the only adventurers guild in the surrounding area, all village and outpost missions in its jurisdiction would be submitted here.

Goblins were the most common monsters of all, and attacking villages and robbing caravans were their main daily activities.

Gauss looked around and couldn’t help but frown.

Just as the receptionist said, there were no missions involving lone goblins. Besides some long-term missions without precise locations, most goblin disturbances involved groups of at least double digits.

And at present, even with his zero-level cantrip, Mage Hand, he was unable to handle double-digit goblin numbers.

While he was struggling with this, he suddenly heard a low-voiced conversation nearby.

He wasn’t intentionally eavesdropping; it just happened that he caught the word “goblin.”

“Birch Village is a bit far...”

“Seven or eight goblins, can we handle that?”

“Don’t worry, goblins are just ordinary trash. I can take one down with each arrow.”

“……”

The small squad speaking consisted of one male and two females, all seemingly around eighteen years old.

The brown-haired female with long curls wore tight light armor, carried a bow on her back, and had a dagger inserted into the side of her tall boots. She had a sharp aura and appeared to be the squad’s spokesperson, standing with hands on hips, encouraging the other two.

The other girl looked much less imposing, with short black hair and bangs covering her eyebrows. Her eyes darted nervously, and she had two daggers hanging at her waist.

The young male was expressionless, arms crossed leaning against a pillar, with a longsword hanging by his side.

Judging by their equipment, all three looked more impressive than Gauss, at least dressed in fine leather and light armor, and their weapons looked new and bright.

However, they looked a bit too new, with almost no signs of long-term use.

Are they rookies like me? Gauss noticed this detail and thought silently.

Have they already accepted a goblin mission?

The archer girl was holding a commission slip.

Seven or eight goblins—fewer than the numbers posted on the wall—and while the money would be less for a small squad, it would be relatively safer.

Knowing that as a mage, he definitely needed a frontliner.

After thinking for a moment, Gauss stepped forward and greeted them proactively.

“Hello, my name is Gauss. I’m a rookie adventurer. Does your squad have room for one more?”
