Chapter 272 - 270 Sky Curtain
Chapter 272: Chapter 270 Sky Curtain
Fogen returned to his seat, poured himself a whiskey, and gazed out the porthole at the sea of clouds.
At this moment, the sound of hurried footsteps came from outside the cabin.
Banlangen knocked urgently at the door and then rushed in.
Seeing Banlangen’s anxious demeanor, Fogen spread his hands and posed a baffled gesture.
"President... The nuclear explosion in Lusimin City was prevented..." Banlangen said, his expression complicated and urgent.
"What do you mean? Wasn’t the nuclear bomb confirmed to have exploded?!" Fogen stood up.
"The nuclear bomb did explode... but the city was not affected. Spy satellites captured images. The city is enveloped by a strange wall of light. We suspect that it was that thing that blocked the effects of the nuclear explosion..." Banlangen explained.
Fogen suddenly felt a sense of dizziness. He knew of that superpower—it belonged to the people of the Superpower Special Department of the Sethiyan Federation. He thought that they had all been killed by Wei Tianyang.
"I’ll call Steijie. You arrange a press release," Fogen said hastily.
He picked up the phone from the table, but upon seeing Banlangen still standing at the door, he spread his hands and said, "Why are you still standing here?!"
"Should... we launch a second nuclear bomb?" Banlangen asked.
Fogen was taken aback and then said, "Tell them to stand by!"
minutes earlier.
Wei Tianyang and Zhao Ling cut out from objective reality, arriving on the street.
People on the street were still walking aimlessly and talking. Some were still waiting for the government’s airdrop.
"It’s not worth it! Just look around you, Yang," Zhao Ling pointed at the people around and said, "Look at them. This country has already abandoned them. You let them live, but what then? The Fogen Government will find a way to make them disappear."
"After you leave, they’ll suddenly start suffering from cancers, all dying off within a few years, all just to keep mouths shut."
"I’ve told you before, minor acts of good and evil are meaningless because you can’t change the logic with which this world operates. Your individual actions cannot offset the decisions of organizations! Besides, they are not your compatriots, so why must you do this?!"
Zhao Ling had been trying to dissuade Wei Tianyang all along the way, not wanting him to expend himself on this matter.
The superpower Sky Curtain—Zhao Ling was familiar with it. This power allowed its user to create a large-scale protective shield to fend off missiles and various physical attacks.
However, Zhao Ling always felt that the effectiveness of this power was exaggerated by the Sethiyan Federation.
If this power could truly defend against nuclear bombs and missiles... then why hadn’t the federal government trained large quantities of these Triune beings?
It was obvious that at best this power could withstand the attack of a few missiles; it probably couldn’t endure a round of saturation missile strikes, let alone a nuclear bomb.
The Sky Curtain had never been tested in combat against a nuclear bomb, and this claim had always been just empty words.
"If you’re not willing, then just leave first," Wei Tianyang said, having made up his mind.
"Don’t be foolish! There are no heroes in this world, and heroes are not needed! The world only needs experts and armies! If you really want to do something meaningful, then take me with you to leave this place. We’ll expose what’s going on with Libitelli, bring down the Fogen Government, and then make public the affairs of the Lingxian Sect!" Zhao Ling exclaimed angrily.
"That’s for later. For now, let’s stop the nuclear bomb first," Wei Tianyang said.
He stood at the center of the street, looked up into the sky—there was not a cloud in sight, the weather clear, a perfect day for fishing.
Wei Tianyang! If you keep messing around like this, I—!" Zhao Ling exploded with rage.
"Do whatever you want," Wei Tianyang shook his head.
"Damn it... you’re killing me... you’re really killing me..." Zhao Ling gave up, knowing full well she couldn’t persuade Wei Tianyang to leave any longer.
She collapsed to the ground all at once, her thoughts clear as day to Wei Tianyang.
"Am I going to die here?! I can’t accept this... I’ve finally... about to break free from the control of Lingxian Sect... I’ve finally about to completely sweep those old fools out of the Tri-Council..."
"That idiot Wei Tianyang... always chasing after some kind of ’meaning’! I thought he would improve once he grew up... but he’s genuinely stupid! What crap about a ’greater meaning’! Power and violence are the greater meanings! Why can’t he understand?!"
"If I don’t die this time, I’ll definitely reduce how I treat him! If I don’t get angry with him, he starts to think his treatment is only natural! I’ve spoiled him too much... He’s being so disobedient!"
Wei Tianyang shook his head helplessly, looking at his right arm. The skin’s surface had cracked like stone, fissures appearing and white light growing denser.
He felt his right hand was gradually leaving the domain of "humanity".
As he thought this, Wei Tianyang’s pupils flashed red, and a force burst forth from the depths of his heart. In that moment, he sensed his spiritual power spreading over every inch of the city’s land.
Then, he felt as though his body and mind were flying to the sky, as if his soul had left his body, losing all sensation of his physical self.
This sensation lasted only a few seconds. Now he felt his body had grown larger. He knew the shield had formed, its radius reaching 39 kilometers, standing in the city center, ample enough to cover the entire city.
This was the Sky Curtain.
At the same time, he realized the cruel nature of his superpower.
The Sky Curtain, just like his body, felt every attack that hit it.
Wei Tianyang looked up to the sky, where a burst of white light flickered.
The nuclear bomb arrived as expected.
Much earlier than Venerable Xu had mentioned, if it weren’t for shifting into objective reality to hasten travel, but instead relying on Fujiwara Makoto to summon a helicopter to flee, they likely would have been shot down.
The nuclear bomb exploded in the sky, becoming a white, impenetrable sphere of light. Time seemed to slow as Wei Tianyang felt a wave of nausea, followed by an unbearable burning pain.
The sphere burst open, turning into an ocean of flames, raining down upon the shield, licking it like a tongue.
Then, a shockwave descended from the heavens, and with a loud clang, struck the shield; the sound echoed persistently.
Wei Tianyang’s eyes bulged, his eardrums burst, spewing black blood. It felt as if he’d been punched from above, pinning him flat to the ground. His stomach churned, a hot surge flowed up his throat and sprayed out of his mouth, vomiting out the little food he had managed to eat.
Wei Tianyang curled up on the ground, convulsing non-stop, his body unscathed yet feeling as if covered in thousand-degree flames, while the shockwave seemed to turn his internal organs to mush.
Zhao Ling held him in her arms, anxiously looking up at the sky.
A massive mushroom cloud rose two thousand meters high, and the sky turned pitch black in an instant, but there was no dust around, only deathly silence.
People on the street curiously stopped to watch, only Zhao Ling began to cry out.
Wei Tianyang’s right hand crumbled to stone dust, his eyes lost their luster, his body grew cold and fell silent.
"Yang! Yang!" Zhao Ling shook Wei Tianyang in her arms, but no response came.
Wei Tianyang’s eyes were tightly shut; the hardest pain had passed. He had entered into Zhao Ling’s memories, now, as Zhao Ling, standing before the king.
