Chapter 566: Chapter 566: Some People Just Deserve It
Yu Ding, being at home, saw his great-grandchildren scared and said angrily, "I’d give a piece of my mind to those little brats who dare to hit them."
Ironically, the two "culprits" were sitting beside the old man, pulling at his beard, and Yu Ding instead of getting angry, was chuckling and letting them carry on.
Despite the huge discrepancy, Yu Tieshan held his anger back, not daring to speak out, given the two culprits’ dad and grandpa both had such high statuses.
Dinner was served quickly, everyone at the table chatted while they ate and drank. Thanks to the two adorable kids as a buffer, the conversation was not bland and mostly revolved around family matters.
After interacting with the Yu family members, Yu Ding noticed that as the family elder, Yu Shuisheng’s words and actions were restrained and revealed competence.
The relationship between Suizi and her spouse with their parents was visibly good. This harmonious family atmosphere made Yu Ding think of his own troubled household, and he couldn’t help but sigh.
How could Yu Shuiniu, the second son, have such a shameful successor within this great family?
He asked about Yu Jingting’s occupation, and upon hearing that the young man was already a factory director, and his spouse well-educated, looking at his own grandson who only knew how to ask for money, Yu Ding felt a wave of desolation.
After having a few drinks, he became more talkative. As Yu Shuisheng and others asked him about the past, he responded truthfully.
Suizi observed silently from the sideline. She noticed that her father-in-law only asked about the past and not the present. After careful consideration, she concluded with high certainty that he had already looked into Yu Ding’s family situation beforehand.
Even if this meeting hadn’t happened, her father-in-law would still be well aware.
The older ginger gets, the spicier it is... Suizi felt somewhat reassured. Having such a competent elder in the family would save her and Jingting a lot of trouble.
Yu Shuisheng was an interesting man. In Suizi’s opinion, he hardly ever discussed important matters at home, and never asked about her and Jingting’s affairs, but that didn’t mean he didn’t know.
Sometimes, when Jingting discussed matters with her, as Shuisheng passed by, he would offer a piece of advice or two, each hitting right on the bull’s eye. Just like last time when Fan Huang came, the two schemed something without telling the young ones.
That a man of Fan Huang’s status could get along well with Yu Shuisheng proved they had mutual respect. Suizi even thought that among these big shots, there might be a magnetic field. With one glance, they knew each other’s bottom line and whether they could get along. Whereas, if the status difference was too big, a glance could potentially turn into a "What are you looking at?" kind of situation.
It would take her and Jingting a few more years to reach the level of their elders.
Today’s meeting with Yu Ding confirmed Suizi’s previous judgement of her father-in-law— he always had a clear sense of the bigger picture.
Though Suizi couldn’t judge Yu Shuisheng’s intentions towards recognizing the family relationship based on the current situation, judging by how he interacted with Yu Ding, he didn’t seem to reject the idea.
Looking at her mother-in-law, who seemed completely oblivious, Suizi couldn’t help but smile.
"Up to no good, what are you thinking about?" Jingting asked her as he picked food for her, and Suizi responded in a low voice.
"Did you notice how well our parents’ personalities complement each other? They’re truly a match made in heaven."
As they were discussing their elders, they spoke quietly. But it was hard to keep it quiet with Jingting there.
Jingting turned to his dad with a big grin, casually slung an arm around his dad’s shoulder.
"My wife said you and mom are like a golden rooster paired with a phoenix, a perfect match. You’re the rooster, and mom is the phoenix."
Wang Cuihua, who was chatting with Yu Ding, blushed at her son’s words.
"Go away, stop talking nonsense!"
"I just said you’re a perfect match! All that chicken stuff, you added it!" Suizi shoved him.
"That’s better than being turtle pebbles." Jiaojiao replied, and was immediately pinched on the face by her mom. She stuck out her tongue, not daring to speak further.
Jingting chuckled, it all meant the same thing, didn’t it?
Used to the bustling atmosphere at home, Shuisheng didn’t even furrow his brows, and said cheerfully to Yu Ding:
"Quite the lively bunch, isn’t it? Your home must be like this as well, right?"
These words prompted Yu Ding to sigh and watch his slow-witted grandson beside him. Not saying a word, he grabbed his liquor cup and drained it.
Better left unsaid ... his house ...
Let alone having a lively meal together as a family, even on ordinary days, things were tense.
Whenever his son, Yu Tieshan, and grandson saw him, they just wracked their brains to pretend to be poor. Even their acts of filial piety could not last for minutes before it turned to the topic of money.
This kind of relationship was extremely tiring for Yu Ding, and he did not understand how he could have such sons.
In the past, he could fool himself by calling them karma, saying that perhaps Yu Shuilin was a debt from his past life come to collect in this one.
But such self-comfort turned bitter upon seeing Yu Yi’s descendants.
Why did Yu Yi’s descendants seem to be paying back debts, each one more promising than the last, while his own ... it was difficult to describe?
"Is your dad’s daughter-in-law still alive?" Yu Ding asked.
"Her health isn’t great." Yu Shuisheng replied.
The senior Mrs. Yu’s health problems were mostly self-inflicted.
Back when Yu Shuisheng hadn’t returned, Madam Yu had given Mrs. Wang and her three children a hard time. Then she was handled by Suizi and her husband and had been quiet for a while.
Old people had their physical ailments. Mr. and Mrs. Yu Shuigou didn’t want to spend money on her medical expenses. After realizing Mrs. Yu had no use left, they started playing a game of hot potato with their brother Yu Shuiniu, treating her as a burden.
While other families were competing in filial piety, the Yu family was competing in unfilial behavior.
When she was with the Yu Shuiniu family, they didn’t heat her kang bedstove. Yu Shuigou, seeing this, thought it would save firewood and also didn’t properly heat her bedstove.
The old lady, being manhandled by the two unfilial sons, grew weaker than before.
If Mrs. Yu could sincerely apologize to Wang Cuihua, Yu Shuisheng might have been able to lend a hand. However, even in her desperate state, she still favored her two sons and would curse whenever she saw Wang Cuihua.
Having been scolded to the verge of madness, Yu Shuisheng stopped paying her any mind. Occasionally when he visits, he would bring some pastries and call it a day after taking a stroll.
Hearing all of this, Yu Ding sighed and shook his head.
"My old sister-in-law, when she was young, was quite headstrong. Before we moved out, she would pick fights with my wife. Seeing her living a hard life, I didn’t bother arguing with her. I never expected she would end up living such a difficult life in her old age..."
As Yu Ding’s words trailed off, noisy voices came from the courtyard.
A swollen-faced Yu Shuigou, leading his similarly battered son trailed by a large group of people brandishing weapons, stood outside the courtyard causing a ruckus.
Upon closer look, Yu Shuigou was carrying someone on his back, small and skinny like a bundle of bones. Suizi squinted her eyes for a closer look—wasn’t that Madam Yu?
It had been some time since Suizi had last seen Madam Yu. This old shrew from days past was now so thin, it seemed like the person had shrunk, her steps didn’t seem that steady anymore. It was quite pitiful seeing her like this.
"Wang Cuihua! Get your ass out here! Hand over those two hell-spawn grandsons who hit my son!" the old lady shouted from her son’s back, followed by a severe bout of coughing.
Suizi revised her recent observation: Those who are pitied usually have a hateful side.
Despite being so thin and frail, she still couldn’t set aside her mischief.
