Chapter 389: Chapter 389 Misunderstandings Lead to Great Fun (Thanks to Rifle Bullets+Updated)
No matter how much Wang Cuihua tried to pry, Suizi would only say that they’d find out once Jingting and his grandfather returned.
It was the two of them, not just Jingting alone.
After hearing Suizi repeat this several times, Wang Cuihua gradually gained confidence and truly believed that Tiegen would bring Yu’s grandfather back.
Suizi had such a charm that made people unconsciously trust her.
The wait for Jingting and his grandfather was long.
Though it was only a few days, to Wang Cuihua, it felt like each day dragged on for a year.
Throughout the wait, there were no news or updates about the two of them. No one knew how they were faring.
Suizi was also worried about Jingting’s safety, but she was more assured than the grandmother-in-law, thus her emotions remained relatively stable during these days.
Days flew by. Suizi was at the office, speculating on when Jingting and his grandfather would return, when Wang Mengmeng walked in with two people.
"Director, these two people are looking for you and they claim to be your relatives."
Suizi’s brows furrowed. She looked up to see both of Shuigou’s parents standing at the door.
Suizi closed her eyes.
When she opened them again, the unpleasant visitors had not disappeared.
"I saw they were very anxious, so I brought them in without asking for your permission first."
Wang Mengmeng sounded genuinely concerned, but her face was filled with schadenfreude, betraying her inner thoughts.
Just one look and Suizi could tell what had happened. The old couple was probably making a fuss outside, insisting to see her. Wang Mengmeng, always a stirrer of trouble, saw this and further incensed Suizi by bringing them into the office.
Wang Mengmeng had an eager look of anticipation on her face, as if expecting to enjoy some melodrama starring Suizi and the old couple.
"Thanks, Mengmeng... By the way, could you organize this quarter’s files for me before you knock off from work?" Suizi stood up and smiled at a stunned Wang Mengmeng, "And could you bring me two cups of tea? Thank you."
"Director... you want...this quarter’s files?!" This was tantamount to demanding her life – how could she possibly organize everything in half a day?
"Yes. You seem to have a lot of free time on your hands." The implication of Suizi’s words was clear: you have time to meddle in my personal affairs, yet no time to carry out your duties?
With her face fallen, Wang Mengmeng left the room. She regretted getting involved in this messy affair.
Xiaoli, another colleague in the office, sat leisurely with a cup of tea, watching Wang Mengmeng return dejectedly. He chided,
"Some people never seem to learn their lesson, despite tripping over the same stone multiple times. Have you profited from provoking the Director, ever?"
Wang Mengmeng slumped onto the table, wailing.
"I was thinking that perhaps the Director would become more benevolent after becoming a mother."
"She is indeed very kind. Just today, she gave me a boiled egg because she thought I was looking pale." Zhang Yue’e fondly caressed a boiled goose egg in her drawer, smiling gleefully.
"She brought me pickles made by her mother-in-law some days ago. It was so delicious." Xiaoli smacked his lips, thinking that Suizi and her family were angels.
"The Director also..."
As soon as the new colleague started to speak, Wang Mengmeng sat upright like a zombie being resurrected.
"Was she nice to you as well? What did she give you?"
"The Director didn’t give me anything. But she introduced a comrade to me and we are planning to meet this weekend." The new colleague spoke shyly, lowering her head.
When Suizi attended a meeting at the Education Bureau, Director Zhen had casually mentioned that his nephew worked in City Government and asked if she knew any suitable girls. Suizi initially wanted to introduce Yue’e, but she found out Yue’e already had someone in mind.
After some consideration, Suizi concluded that the new colleague was quite suitable, seeing that her family background was reasonably good. Thus, she decided to set up the meeting.
Hearing this, Wang Mengmeng flew into a rage.
Banging the larger-sized cup of tea onto the table, she stormed out of the office with a dark expression on her face.
In her mind, Suizi had disrespected her. Why didn’t Suizi introduce such a good match to her?
"Ah, everyone wishes to change the world, yet no one thinks about changing themselves." Xiaoli calmly took a sip of tea.
Yue’e, with a fiery spark in her eyes, looked at him.
"Xiaoli, I think there’s profound truth in what you just said."
"This is a quote from Tolstoy - a quote from a book recommended by the Director. Would you like to read it? I can lend it to you."
Yue’e nodded enthusiastically. Of course, she was willing to read a book recommended by both Suizi and Xiaoli.
It was almost as if Suizi had heard Xiaoli’s words, because she was having similar thoughts at the same time.
The opportunistic old couple, never succeeding yet always unrelenting, never failing to seize every opportunity to benefit at the expense of her family, had never once succeeded.
If they could take to heart Tolstoy’s spirit and channel their shameless energy towards self-improvement, perhaps they would have already prospered.
"How could you be so rude? You moved without letting your relatives know?! We elders had to come to your workplace to find you! Were you planning to hide forever if we didn’t look for you?" The grandfather angrily slapped the back of the chair and scolded.
"Why would we need to hide if we don’t owe anyone money?"
Suizi’s gentle remark served as a reminder to her grandfather, not to forget, there were countless leverage against them in her hands.
Perhaps thinking about the I.O.U., grandfather paused.
"Suizi, don’t get us wrong. We mean no harm. We’re here for your benefit. Take us to your home and we’ll speak to your mother-in-law."
Suizi was somewhat reluctant to take them home, for Jingting was not at home and she was uncertain what may happen if the pair of rotten meats were to visit.
The last time they visited on the pretext of celebrating her baby’s 100th day, they were only interested in taking advantage. After being driven away following an impressive display of wealth by Wang Cuihua, they had waited a long time and probably thought of a new scheme to exploit her family.
But it was problematic to allow them to hang about the office too. She had a meeting later and it wouldn’t be appropriate to let them hang around making a scene.
As Suizi pondered how she could find a pretext to get rid of the troublesome pair, someone entered the room.
At the sight of the newcomer, Suizi’s spirits lifted.
"Xiaoba, you’re back?!"
Xiaoba was one of the comrades who went to the border with Jingting. The moment Suizi saw him, she immediately thought of Jingting.
She paid no heed to the bothersome duo and went out to talk with Xiaoba.
Grandmother gave Grandfather a meaningful glance and he quickly leaned in to eavesdrop.
Suizi and Xiaoba stood at a distance, and he could only catch fragments of their conversation.
He came back?...
Not at home...
Meet...
Grandfather was instantly filled with righteous indignation. This must mean Suizi and Xiaoba planned to have an illicit rendezvous while Jingting was away!
"This immoral woman! She’s doing such disgraceful things behind our backs! If she fails to pay up, we’ll tell her mother-in-law and her husband!"
Grandfather excitedly shared his "shocking discovery" with Grandmother, who also got riled up.
They could imagine the paved road of opportunity stretching before them, with Suizi’s Achilles’ heel in clear sight.
In actual fact, Xiaoba came to inform Suizi that Jingting had returned, and that he was not at home as he went to bathe at a bathhouse. He asked Suizi to meet him at the entrance of the bathhouse after work.
Why not wait until he gets back home?
Jingting didn’t want Suizi to worry and therefore casually mentioned to his comrade to relay the message. Moreover, he cared too much about his image and didn’t want his dirty and tired state to affect his standing in Suizi’s heart.
Another reason was that with Shuisheng back home and Jingting out, it would create an opportunity for the old man and his wife to have some alone time.
Jingting’s plan was perfect except for an overlooked special circumstance: the arrival of the two rotten meats from the Yu Family.
