Suizi thought that Yu Shuilian was about to reveal the whereabouts of the person she had kidnapped, so she quickly stopped Yu Jingting, signaling for Yu Shuilian to speak.
"If I tell you this secret, will you let me go?" Yu Shuilian proposed a condition.
"Yu Jingting and I can let you go," Suizi added internally, but the police will definitely not let you off.
"Swear it!" Yu Shuilian, desperate to survive, cried out with a twisted, fierce expression.
"You’re giving me lip?" Yu Jingting roughly grabbed her collar. "You can’t expect a dog to spit out ivory. I’ll just beat her first."
"Wait, Jingting, let her speak," warned Suizi, halting Yu Jingting. Turning to Yu Shuilian, Suizi offered a ’kind’ smile. "My man has a temper. You have no right to negotiate with us."
Yu Jingting played along, brandishing the iron rod towards the alley wall. The faded red bricks cracked under the force of his blow, a sight which made Yu Shuilian feel like her own bones were being broken.
"Stop! I’ll talk! Yu Shuisheng is still alive!"
Suizi’s eyes widened in an instant.
The thought in her heart was clear: goodness is always rewarded indeed.
She was worried about how to explain this matter to Yu Jingting, but her problem was solved for her.
Yu Shuilian was like the healing rain in Suizi’s dire drought.
"Shit!" Yu Jingting, having waited for her to speak, kicked her in the stomach, raging at her attempted deception, "You can’t even make up a better story?"
Being a woman doesn’t mean you won’t get hit.
Yu Shuilian groaned as she fainted from his kick.
Suizi panicked. If she missed this opportunity, she would have no way to explain to Yu Jingting that his father was still alive.
In her urgency, she pulled out the black U-shaped hairpin from her hair and stabbed Yu Shuilian’s hand forcefully.
"Ah –– " At her shrill cry, Yu Shuilian regained consciousness.
"Why did you say my father-in-law isn’t dead? If you deceive him, he won’t let you off easy," warned Suizi, indicating towards Yu Jingting.
Yu Jingting glanced at the U-shaped hairpin in her hand. Considering her ferocity, it seemed she was the real savage here.
"I’m not lying to you, Yu Shuisheng really didn’t die! The day he fell into the river during the excavation, the body they pulled out of the water wasn’t him, it was Ergou from our village."
"The story seems plausible," Yu Jingting was still skeptical about Yu Shuilian’s words.
No wonder, Yu Shuisheng had been "dead" for ten years now, and back then, Yu Jingting had held a vigil for him himself. It was only natural that he wouldn’t readily believe her.
"Everything I’m saying is true! Why don’t you believe me? I saw your father washed ashore with my own eyes, and I watched a couple of people carry him onto a horse-drawn carriage."
"Then why didn’t you speak up back then?" asked Suizi.
"Ergou was killed by him... by him..." Yu Shuilian choked up, unable to voice her own constraints.
"She’s only spouting nonsense. Let’s break her leg quickly. Liao Yong will be here soon," said Yu Jingting, twirling the iron rod and pondering which part of her body would break fastest.
"Ergou was murdered by the villagers. If I had said anything, I would have put my own life in danger. But I swear, I really saw your father alive! He was grumbling and complaining when they carried him onto the carriage. He was definitely alive!"
"Ha ha...." Yu Jingting took a step back, sneering coldly at Yu Shuilian.
"You believe me? Can I go then?" Yu Shuilian, thinking she had proved herself valuable, had confessed all she knew.
"I believe in your bloody hell!"
With a dull thud, a cry of acute pain echoed.
Suizi turned away, her long lashes hiding her intentions.
Yu Jingting threw the rod to the other end of the wall and turned around to embrace Suizi, he felt her shoulders trembling slightly under his touch.
"Are you scared? I told you not to follow."
"I’m not scared..." She was furious instead.
Furious that such a wicked person as Yu Shuilian, having found her father-in-law, would refuse to confess the truth to her mother-in-law.
Her poor mother-in-law, mourning the loss of her "deceased" husband, had suffered all these years.
Had Yu Jingting and his siblings had a father, they would be far better off than they are now.
With their mother and surviving siblings, they relied solely on Yu Jingting to get this far.
A simple act of kindness could have changed the life of their family. Yet Yu Shuilian chose to keep quiet until now.
It wasn’t hard to understand. Yu Shuilian was the type of scumbag who, for money, would deceive her own family and sell them off. She had a low sense of morality, devoid of empathy.
Remembering the pain her mother-in-law went through because of Yu Shuilian and how the victims were separated from their families due to her deceit, Suizi succumbed to uncontrollable sadness and anger.
Therefore, the alley was once again filled with Yu Shuilian’s screams.
Yu Jingting dropped the lit cigarette from his mouth.
Watching his wife let loose, the only thought in his head was Impressive! Truly impressive!
He vowed never to cross her in the future. When she got tough, she was truly terrifying – telegraphing her punches, causing him to wince with each hit.
When Liao Yong arrived, he saw Yu Shuilian collapsed onto the ground, resembling a broken rag doll.
Only this rag doll was somewhat ugly.
"What happened to her ––?"
"While we were chasing her, she ran into the alley wall. She was hit by a falling brick which seems to have broken her leg," Suizi replied confidently with a high EQ.
"You’re lying! You hit me...! It was her, it was her..." Yu Shuilian’s face was a mess of snot and tears.
As soon as he heard the words "hit," Liao Yong swallowed nervously. He glanced at the goddess-like Suizi. Surely it couldn’t be?
"Don’t worry about going in for reformation, Yu Shuilian. We’ll watch over your family, and your kids. They seem to be doing pretty well," Suizi reassured her.
When Yu Shuilian heard her mention her children, a wave of fear passed over her eyes.
It was clear from Suizi’s expression that if Yu Shuilian dared to utter another word, her family would be done for.
Yu Jingting cracked his knuckles, and Yu Shuilian cowered.
"You tricked me. You said...I told you everything, you said you’d let me go..."
Only Suizi and her husband could make a villain as dejected as this.
Given her current state, Yu Shuilian did look pitiful.
She had multiple injuries, and she was hideous to look at.
But Suizi thought about the innocent people who had been victimized by her.
Didn’t the people she sold off deserve sympathy?
"Look up, what do you see in the sky?"
Yu Shuilian looked up to find the sun blinding her.
"Nothing?" Isn’t that just the sky?
"Knowing the goodness of the world comes from the deeds of the heart. This is as clear as daylight, something you would never understand," Suizi answered.
"What, what does that mean?"
Yu Shuilian, a country bumpkin, found it difficult to comprehend Suizi’s literary wisdom.
Yu Jingting slapped Yu Shuilian on the back of her head.
"She is saying that you’ve lost your conscience! Regretting now is no use. What were you doing before?"
This simple and easy-to-understand explanation got the point across to everyone.
Do not wait until judgement day to regret not being a better person.
The tears of the wicked are less valuable than maggots in a toilet.
Yu Shuilian was taken away. Along with her, others hiding in the warehouse were also arrested.
The citizens realized the gravity of the situation only then. The evil force was lurking right under their noses. The couple, being "conscientious citizens," had contributed to society again.
The authorities rewarded them with bountiful money and a silk banner for their protection without revealing their identities.
But none of this mattered to Suizi and her husband.
Yu Jingting fell into deep thought.
Was what Yu Shuilian said true after all?
