Chapter 499: 493, Time for Revenge (First Update)_1

Cyber attacks never ceased to exist, even back in 2017, the DDoS attacks against corporations in internet history peaked instantaneously at 453.8Gbps. Hackers never disappeared from our lives; instead, they grew stronger and more organized and disciplined.

People in their normal daily lives rarely knew what really happened in the hacker world. It all seemed like a clandestine affair.

Yet it undeniably existed.

Ren He underestimated his own expectations regarding the promotional tactics for "1984" he thought that drawing more attention to the book would be enough, for the book itself was serious literature.

However, when hacker attack methods suddenly intensified and targeted over a hundred corporate websites with an aggressive and explosive approach, it became a news phenomenon!

In his previous life, antivirus software was essentially a scam. Sales of antivirus software were not doing well, and companies couldn’t even take care of their own affairs because everyone thought it was alarmist nonsense.

But when the merchants of antivirus software started developing viruses themselves, the world became a dangerous place. They were developing viruses while promoting their own antivirus software, like a person wielding a sword in one hand and selling shields in the other.

The most classic example was probably the founder of McAfee.

Now all of Europe had fallen into panic because of this sudden cyber attack. It was truly because the scope of the attacks was so vast, and their methods so sharp. They struck once and vanished without a trace, their only aim being to promote a book, and this book itself propagated anti-authoritarian thoughts.

This hacker was like a democratic warrior in the world of cyberspace... which made him seem so legendary!

So the people of Europe alternated between panic, demanding government protection for cyber security, and seeking out the perpetrator, while also reading the book and reflecting on its anti-authoritarian ideas.

The reason why Ren He told Xu Nuo not to attack any European official websites was precisely because he feared that things would escalate too much and even provoke fierce retaliation.

Now, the influence of the revised "1984" had completely surpassed that of his previous life. In the past, while it was known as one of the seminal works against authoritarianism, not many had actually read it.

It was different now, everybody wanted to know what was truly within this book, even the media was reporting on this matter!

Media initially covered the cyber attacks, but gradually they started to deliver deep evaluations and analysis of "1984," shifting the focus slowly to the content of the book itself!

When Xu Nuo came back the next morning, Ren He had just woken up, rubbing his head. They checked the European media opinion, and Xu Nuo was stunned, "This is huge..."

"You won’t be traced, right?" Ren He asked.

"No, my tracks are untraceable in the server," Xu Nuo confidently said, "Did you make it clear, to remain unexposed?"

"Yeah, as long as we’re not exposed, that’s good. The bigger the uproar, the better. I’m afraid it’s not causing enough of a stir!" Ren He said cheerfully.

He used an almost prophetic approach to gather all the evidence regarding the Prism Project. Without his past life experiences, he would not have known where to start, but now that he had gotten hold of this information, he was ready to give the United States a counterstrike!

Who could imagine, two individuals capable of retaliating against a government? Ren He was eager to see how surprised the National Security Agency would be when his method of obtaining the materials was revealed. They probably had no idea that leaking secrets could be so simple, just stealing a hard drive from someone’s home!

All the spies in the world should feel ashamed for not having thought of it sooner!

This was but a paper-thin barrier, and it was Ren He who had punctured it.

Of course, Xu Nuo knew what Ren He ultimately intended to do. Ren He had already shared his complete plan during last night’s drinking session. Without Xu Nuo, the plan would not work.

Ren He asked Xu Nuo, "Are you afraid or not?"

"Afraid," Xu Nuo admitted honestly, "but the feeling of being against the world is pretty exhilarating..."

Yes, exhilarating indeed. Many have fantasized about it, how thrilling it would be to one day take on the world for a lover or something important!

One could even say that from an early age, when Xu Nuo started getting into computers, he had an admiration for hackers because they held sway over the realms of the internet.

Teenage rebellion comes with a desire to destroy, but Ren He transformed Xu Nuo’s destructive impulse into the accomplishment of building an empire early on.

After all, the sense of achievement from creating is always more substantial and real than the desire to destroy.

Ren He shook his head, "Against the world? America doesn’t represent the whole world, but as long as you’re not afraid, that’s good."

By now, ’1984’ had gained notoriety and soon, due to the news, spread to China, Russia, America, Japan, and so on, reaching every continent.

People were more intrigued by the news of the hacker attack, but nobody could ignore the book behind the news.

These days, the internet was abuzz with discussions about anti-authoritarianism, talking about how terribly frightening it would be if everyone’s lives were under surveillance.

It seemed as if by discussing this, people elevated their level of thinking.

Until now, no one had realized what would follow from this event; in the end, people might become more interested in the hacker.

Who was this hacker? With such sharp attacks across so many European websites, why was the book unattributed?

What exactly was his purpose? Did he write the book himself? Was he truly a champion of democracy?

Everyone was fascinated by these questions, as if a heroic figure willing to challenge authority had appeared in real life.

If one has ability, they will be admired, and, in truth, many don’t care whether that person is good or bad.

Being legendary is enough.

Anti-authoritarianism finally entered America as Ren He had hoped. Americans, too, were repelled by authoritarianism, yet they thought such things were still far from them.

What Ren He had to do was wait until the people of that land were emotionally charged with anti-authoritarianism, then ignite the last bomb, detonating everything there.

Emotions, economy, life.

Waiting a full week, Ren He and Xu Nuo returned to that room filled with screens. Ren He handed over a series of documents to Xu Nuo, including the inception of the Prism Project, which department authorized it, the authorization documents.

Who would execute it, who would operate it specifically, the names of the involved personnel, all the security consultants were about to be exposed to the public eye.

Also, how extensive its surveillance reached, which other world leaders were within the scope of surveillance... and so on, every piece of solid evidence made it impossible for the American government to deny.

"Let’s start," Ren He said, sitting in the dark room with the screens flickering before his eyes.

The time for revenge has come.
