Chapter 256: 254, Who the Hell Has a Bad Memory (First Update)_1
In his previous life, when Ren He attended a training session, he had the chance to sit alongside executives from Alibaba. The instructor would start the class by saying, "It’s an honor, really, that executives from Alibaba would attend my lecture."
Such was the stature of Alibaba within the business community, with the other corporate attendees looking on enviously. Although they might have been doing similar jobs, their different platforms afforded them different levels of respect.
Of course, perhaps the others were more professional in some aspects.
Ren He had thought that maybe one day, Qinghe Games could achieve that kind of recognition, or perhaps it already had. He heard that several of his former employers in game planning wanted to invite them back to lecture.
This was a confirmation of one’s achievements in life, an opportunity provided by the platform, and also something one had to strive for.
After Dota went live, Ren He held a meeting for all the game planners. As before, he presented hand-drawn concept art, but this time it was no longer Kunlun or Dota, it was Assassin’s Creed!
Ren He spent a whole day talking them through the plot and game modes of Assassin’s Creed and highlighted the key features of the game, then the planners were to come up with their own proposals.
By then, Qinghe Games had the most powerful and experienced group of thinkers in the industry. He no longer needed to do everything himself; all he had to do was lay out the ideas and let the team take the reins.
Less than an hour after the planners had left the office, the entire Qinghe Games was buzzing with excitement: the Big Boss was planning a new game again!
The veterans, who were worried about what to do after Dota, finally breathed a sigh of relief, glad there were new games to work on. The previously uneasy veterans were invigorated once again, embarking on a new journey with high spirits!
The early disclosure of Assassin’s Creed by Ren He was actually aimed at stabilizing morale, to show that Qinghe Games would not end after Dota.
However, no matter how many games they would make in the future, Dota would always be the core product of Qinghe Games—it was the foundation.
The CG animation would still take some time to produce. Dota had already stirred up a wave of public opinion following Kunlun, with all gaming websites and forums creating special sections for Dota. Compared to its previous life, Dota’s starting point was high enough; it would grow, slowly but surely, into a gaming industry giant.
At this point, Ren He was to return to Capital to continue his high school life. Quietly, the owner of Qinghe Games returned to No.4 Middle School to resume his life as an ordinary high school student. If the members of Qinghe Games knew about this, they would probably find it unimaginable—a high school student who had single-handedly founded Qinghe Games?
And with all the money he had made, why bother with school?
But this was what Ren He truly enjoyed—a peaceful and carefree school life.
A week had passed when Ren He returned to Liu Hai Alley, only to discover that one of the yards at the corner was being moved into by a moving company. It was one of the two yards he had told Liu Bing about, and it seemed someone had bought it not long after he had mentioned it.
Curious, Ren He took a peek inside, meant to be just a casual look, but to his surprise, he saw Xia Yuting, bare-faced, directing the movers on where to place the furniture.
"Yuting?" Ren He called out, "Did you buy this place?"
Xia Yuting, upon hearing Ren He’s voice, turned around with a smile and walked out, "Yes, after listening to what you said, I also felt that this is a good place to preserve asset value. And I really did envy your quiet paradise, so I bought this yard. We’re neighbors again."
"Haha, great, I would love if the whole alley was filled with people I know. It’s easier to look out for each other if something happens," Ren He laughed and added, "Alright, Yuting, get on with your work; I just came back from Luo City and need a good sleep."
"Go and get some rest," Xia Yuting said, then stood at the entrance of her new yard, watching Ren He’s departing figure, her thoughts inscrutable.
She herself didn’t know why she had this sudden urge to move here, nor what it might lead to, but she had done it anyway.
...
Ren He arrived at school the next morning, and Jiang Haoyang immediately said, "Back already?"
Come back? Jiang Haoyang was mimicking Ren He’s lisp...
Ren He’s face darkened on the spot. How long had it been and they still hadn’t forgotten? If they hadn’t been close, the Tear Potion would have already been in play...
"Buzz off, you’re annoying," Ren He said, without any good humor.
"Haha, you have no idea! While you were gone, everyone at school kept talking about your lisp. Some even said you might drop out because you couldn’t get it treated. Liu Bing and I laughed our heads off," Jiang Haoyang laughed, "It’s great that you’re back. The 2006 game exhibition has invited our Qinghe Club; we were all planning to go and have fun."
"What’s so fun about a game exhibition? If you guys want to go, then go," Ren He said as he organized his books.
"There are lots of beauties, I’ve heard that many game companies hired quite a few models!" Jiang Haoyang said, his voice thick with mystery.
Ah... so that’s the deal. In his past life, it was standard practice for game exhibitions to employ more beauties than even auto shows, specifically to lure in geeky gamers...
What’s the biggest draw for geeks? 36D! Isn’t that why Jiang Haoyang was drawn in?
However, Ren He didn’t plan to go. At most, he might just take a look. He certainly wouldn’t be happy being tied up there for days on end. He’d prefer to sleep instead. In the blink of an eye, there was only a little over a month left until the end-of-semester exams. Now that he was at No.4 Middle School, he couldn’t just hang at the bottom anymore.
At this time, the Qinghe Club’s after-school hours every afternoon had become a time to study together. Everyone leveraged each other’s strengths and weaknesses. If you didn’t understand physics or chemistry, you could ask Jiang Haoyang; for questions about math or geography, you could ask Liu Bing. These two top students were Qinghe Club’s treasures.
For Ren He, however, trying to catch up on physics and chemistry was a bit too difficult. Chemistry was a bit better since it involved a lot of memorization, and Ren He had an amazing memory; but physics was a bit more troublesome.
But he had said from the start when Qinghe Club was established that he would also work hard to change himself. It wasn’t just lip service but a heartfelt statement.
Everyone needs to work hard to change themselves.
Some say it’s because you can’t change the world, so you have to change yourself. However, Ren He didn’t agree with this. In his view, working hard to change oneself is really about being better equipped to change the world.
Has he changed the world now? Yes, he has.
Songs, games, extreme sports— even if they only make up a small part of the entire world, they are still changes.
It was around this time that the members of the Qinghe Club realized that Ren He wasn’t omnipotent. In their eyes, Ren He could sit down and play the piano, stand up and play the violin, and develop a game that could influence the whole world, but he was not without flaws. At the very least, his physics and chemistry were really poor...
But on reflection, this seemed to make sense. If Ren He were too perfect, they would find him unreal.
However, Ren He remained invincible in history, politics, and other such subjects. As long as it involved rote memorization, Ren He was an unstoppable force in liberal arts subjects. Sometimes, when someone asked a question, Ren He would inadvertently mention the page and line where the information could be found. Jiang Haoyang and the others were scared witless. What kind of memory was this?!
Some even wanted to give up on the club’s internal scholarships for these subjects. Only then did Ren He console them, "It’s okay if you have a bad memory; I won’t participate in the scholarship evaluation."
Who the heck has a bad memory?!
