Chapter 109: 108, Luo City Good Driver (Second Update)_1
Street racing has always been an activity for the wealthy. How much would a nice car plus the cost of modding set you back? It’s simply out of reach for ordinary people.
Back in 2005, you would hardly catch a glimpse of street racing in Luo City, a small town. After all, there were only so many nice cars around, and Ren He’s pickup truck probably ranked among the top in Luo City.
It’s lonely. I wanted to race against a car.
But he only entertained the thought; after all, when it came to real street racing and high-speed drifting around turns, those pros doing it at 150 km/h was the norm. Think about it—others are taking turns at 150 km/h, and your personal record for sprinting on a bike on flat ground barely hits 120 km/h.
How could I even compare?
Ren He arrived at a downhill section. From this point on, the road was all steep descents and big turns, perfect for some bike drifting action.
He put on his goggles and stepped on the mountain bike pedals, standing up like a true racing driver. Ren He felt he must look pretty cool and showy...
However, he didn’t notice that right behind him, there was an internet cafe with two high school students stepping out: "Let’s go, it’s 5:20. Time for the dorm check and morning exercises."
"Hey, what’s that guy up to?" They happened to see Ren He putting on his goggles, and the way he did it in the dead of night, showing off as if no one’s watching, almost convinced these high school students that Ren He was a professional cyclist...
But then they snapped back to reality, realizing, this is right outside an internet cafe. What race?
The next moment, Ren He’s bike suddenly took off, gaining rapid acceleration downhill with gravity’s aid. The speedometer on the mountain bike instantly leaped from 0 to 15, 25, 35, 45!
In fact, a bike could drift around a corner at speeds as low as 23 km/h, and how much more you want to push it depends on your confidence in your control over the bike.
Ren He’s thigh muscles worked like machinery, giving power as he stood on the bike, getting ready for the upcoming turn, when—seemingly on a whim—one of the students fished out his phone and hurriedly started recording. He had a feeling something spectacular was about to happen: either a slick turn or a disastrous wipeout! Positioned on a high slope, they had a clear view of the road stretching below.
Suddenly, a piercing sound of friction between bicycle tire and asphalt reached their ears. The young man on the bike leaned forward abruptly, turning the handlebars the opposite direction, and clenched the brakes hard!
The whole bike skidded sideways down the slope, drifting like a howling beast, while the fluttering clothes of the young rider made him appear like a nocturnal bird against the night sky.
At that moment, the high school students at the internet cafe’s door realized with astonishment that even at such speed and while the bike was tilted, the teenager’s body remained upright! No matter how the bike moved, his upper body barely did. So, this was the essence of drifting a bike through a turn?
Right after the corner, the bike seemed to pause for a split second before he forcefully pedaled onwards, continuing his advance.
Over and over again, Ren He showcased three high-speed bicycle drifts in front of them before finally vanishing from sight!
The high school students looked at each other in awe: "Awesome!"
"I’ve always heard of cars drifting around corners, but a bike? No way!"
Keep in mind that this was 2005 when even car racing was scarce, and yet here was someone flaunting fancy bicycle drifts right in front of them!
The way it flowed so naturally made them doubt if what Ren He was riding was really just a bike!
The high school students, who had scarcely seen car drifting, were in total disbelief upon witnessing such smooth bike drifting—it was like seeing God!
"Since when did Luo City have such a badass?"
"It looks like the other party is still very young, huh? Seems to be just a middle school student?"
"Holy shit, I got the entire drift around the corner on camera! But the person was wearing goggles and a helmet, couldn’t make out their face at all!"
"Come on, let’s watch it again!"
A few people stood at the entrance of the internet cafe and watched it again on their phones, the sensation of drifting like clouds and flowing water was simply thrilling!
"Post the video on the website!"
"Let’s go, back to the internet cafe to post it," a few high school students who had just left the internet cafe turned around and went back inside...
As for the morning dorm inspections and physical exercises, all were forgotten, the scene they witnessed was too shocking to be ignored.
While Ren He was enjoying the thrill of drifting, he had no idea that a video titled ’Luo City’s Good Driver’ had been uploaded to the nation’s biggest video portal site around 5 AM. As soon as it was posted, it racked up several hundred views, and the number was growing alarmingly fast.
When Ren He finally sprinted onto the flat straight road, he began to slow down the bike until he stopped at the roadside.
Ren He looked back up the slope, astonished at himself. He could hardly imagine having pulled off a bicycle drift like that in the past, fearing that in another life, he might have crashed at the first bend.
Perfect technique doesn’t mean flawless behavior, and today Ren He truly understood that. He had struggled with the rhythm at the first bend, and if he hadn’t pumped the pedals hard to shift his weight and correct the bike’s angle, he might have wiped out on that very first corner.
He had the time of his life today, each drifting moment felt like a breathtaking journey, exhilarating!
Time to hurry home and sleep, he still had to go to school tomorrow and continue reviewing with that Little Fatty, Xu Nuo!
Ren He’s physical fitness included an enhanced ability to recover, so playing around with drifting in the middle of the night and then sleeping wouldn’t affect tomorrow’s classes too much.
On the way to school the next day, Ren He heard many people discussing something about ’Luo City’s Good Driver’, but he didn’t pay much attention to it. While eating breakfast at a diner, he saw someone across from him watching a video on their phone, with several people discussing the ’Good Driver’ of Luo City.
Since when did Luo City suddenly have a Good Driver? Ren He wondered.
Then he heard the student across from him suddenly exclaim, "So thrilling, I can’t believe a bicycle can be ridden like this, drifting through turns, so smooth!"
At that moment, Ren He suddenly realized... something big must have happened!
"Excuse me, what’s this Luo City’s Good Driver you’re talking about?" Ren He asked.
"You haven’t seen it? A video has gone viral. It’s said to be filmed by a few high school students who came out of an internet cafe early in the morning. It features a young guy from our Luo City riding a bicycle, drifting through turns at high speed, it’s simply blood-pumping!"
Ren He would bet his life on it, if that wasn’t him in the video, he’d livestream smashing eggs on his head! He had no idea anyone was watching when he started drifting, let alone that someone recorded a video, and he certainly didn’t expect it to blow up like this!
Luo City’s Good Driver? The Good Driver turned out to be a bicyclist...
How could he have become Luo City’s Good Driver so unwittingly? Would people challenge him, and the loser has to leave a bike logo or something?
