Chapter 106: 105, Leaked Question Incident! _1
Life returned to its mundane rhythm after the fervor subsided, leaving many people feeling lost and out of sorts. It was said that tears followed the end of a splendid feast, and such emptiness after the excitement could overwhelm, yet Ren He was not one of them.
Somehow, he was not bewildered at all; in fact, he began to look forward to the future with even more anticipation, imagining his sudden wealth and the unknown rewards from the Divine Punishment System.
The middle school exams were drawing near, and the classroom was quieter with less horsing around. It is as if life is a series of stages to rush through: every year in primary school brings exams, followed by middle school entrance exams, then high school entrance exams after middle school, and finally the Gaokao to enter university after the struggle of high school.
And after graduating from university, society cheerfully tells you your real trials have just begun.
What was that? The first 22 years were just a warm-up?
But the reality is exactly that. No matter how much you might have hated it at the time, once you enter society, the time spent in school becomes the most nostalgic: sleeping in class, sharing novels with your brothers, the girls you secretly liked, the notes passed around, maybe a basketball game, or a match of a game with classmates.
Ren He’s class was doing relatively well. Even Little Fatty, Xu Nuo, was diligently and conscientiously studying. In Ren He’s previous life, several of his classmates had already given up by this point.
Originally, Ren He was much like Xu Nuo. Xu Nuo felt comforted by the thought that someone was struggling alongside him, but now, he panicked when he was the only one with poor grades.
"Do you think I can make it into our school?" Xu Nuo was anxious. The cutoff score for their school last year was 490 points, but he only managed to score 410 in the last monthly test, and that was after working hard. With just over three months left until the middle school exams, he felt the pressure mounting.
"As long as you keep up the effort, you’ll definitely be fine. At least, if your score is close enough, your dad would be willing to pay for the difference. Actually, the closer your score is, the more he might feel like he’s saving money... He’s probably already prepared to pay a high price. When you suddenly score high and he only has to pay a little, won’t he be happy? He might even agree to let you pursue programming!" Ren He said nonchalantly as he typed away on his phone, which had become a bit laggy. He planned to replace it sometime soon. His mind wasn’t on studying at all; the middle school exams were no concern of his.
Speaking of programming, Xu Nuo immediately perked up: "My cousin offered me a job recently, but I turned it down."
"What job?" Ren He asked curiously.
"They seem to be making a game, and they offered me a part in developing the game engine," Xu Nuo said.
Games? Ren He also wanted to make games. A standard game, in its formal development process, usually required three parts: the planning, the programming, and the art modeling. The planning stage determined how exciting the game would be, conceptualizing the plot, skills, game modes, etc., and then delegated the implementation to the programmers and art modelers.
The final combination would result in a complete game.
Actually, making a game is a very straightforward task, unless you’re dealing with particularly complex games like World of Warcraft, which require significant human and material resources just for modeling.
Ren He’s thoughts on making games were simple: create a rough version, ensure it’s fun, and then add updates and patches to flesh it out over time. He never planned to do everything all at once as that would be too costly.
The easiest part of game development was the planning, as it all existed in Ren He’s mind: the game heroes’ models, game modes, and the various skills—none of it was a problem and could simply be replicated.
Moreover, the first game he had chosen to develop wouldn’t even need much promotion—Dota!
Did Dota become popular because someone promoted it? No! It spread easily because it was addictive!
Ten-player games like League of Legends and Dota are practically toxic!
Of course, even so, creating a crude version of Dota was no simple task, so it wasn’t time to put the plan into action yet.
"Ren He, help me with this problem," Xu Nuo said, moving a paper closer to Ren He.
But after a glance, Ren He was taken aback, and he asked curiously, "Where did you get this paper from?"
"It’s the actual test from last year’s middle school exams. My dad got someone to find it for me," Xu Nuo replied.
In middle school, practicing with actual tests wasn’t popular yet—actual tests were past years’ exam papers. Xu Nuo’s father had gone through quite some trouble to get a hold of actual tests. Back then, Ren also found some actual tests for Ren He, but when he gave them to Ren He, the exams were already upon him.
Ren He was stunned by his father’s timing: You’re giving me actual tests to review when I’m about to take the exam? Why not wait until after I’m done?
Ren was baffled as well: Aren’t you just in seventh grade? These are for eighth graders to review!
It has to be said that Ren He’s family had a rather laissez-faire approach to raising kids...
However, at that moment, the reason Ren He was stunned was that he had seen that exam paper before!
In an instant, his highly retentive memory began tracing back to the source of this paper in his memories. Two seconds later, he was even more bewildered. It was the very same paper from the stack his father had given him before his middle school exams, so how had it become a paper from last year’s exams in this world? Two parallel worlds had the exact same actual test paper!
Although the history of this world was mostly similar to his previous life, with some dynasties having no differences at all, and major historical trajectories were completely consistent—for instance, the People’s Republic of China was established in 1949 here too, even specifically on October 1st—he had never extended this similarity to anything else. Since most of the cultural and entertainment aspects he was familiar with no longer existed, it gave him the distinct impression of being in a "different world."
But right now, he was struck with an exciting thought. Ren He quickly grabbed the remaining papers from Xu Nuo to check them, and they were identical to those from his memory!
By the same logic, if nothing unexpected happened, this year’s middle school exam paper would be the same one he had taken years ago!
As improbable as it seemed, it was truly happening. It was like there were many brands from his former world that still existed here, and this was one of the trajectories unaffected by change.
"Little Fatty, from today on, I’ll tutor you. If you don’t get into our school, hold me accountable. If you do, you’re going to help me with a big project!" Ren He said gleefully. If the middle school exam papers matched up, wouldn’t the university entrance exams be the same? What was the difference between this and winning a 5 million lottery during one’s school years?!
