Chapter 49
Inside the portal
The Beast chuckled softly in mockery, "I’m amazed at how you cling to that little hope that there’s still a way to survive this. Sorry to disappoint you but, there no antidote to my poison."
"Are you serious? Is this really the end? What kinda Beast are you for fucks sake? I never heard of poisonous ones."
"The beast realm is the biggest unexplored realm, I’m not surprised that creatures like him exist here."
"Save your strength hunter, or you’d die faster." The Beast said, and just as he said it...one of the hunters coughed out blood and collapsed to the floor, twitching as his face paled from death.
"We’d die anyway, what’s the use of delaying it by a few more minutes. Please, if anyone of you survives this, help me send a message to my family. Tell my daughter that I’m sorry for missing her birthday, I’m sorry I couldn’t make it back like I promised." One of the hunters pleaded in a trembling voice, his eyes, nose and ear already bleeding as he clutched his chest tightly. He could already feel his organs failing.
Kaizen exhaled softly, then turned to the beast with a cold gaze. "Your death is the only way to dispel the poison isn’t it ?" He’d figured that if there was no physical antidote, then it meant that the poison only worked by the Beast’s mana. With it’s energy, it could penetrate the organs of its prey and kill them from the inside. And that also meant the poison will seize to function once the Beast was dead.
The Beast remained quiet for a moment, like his secret had been let out, but it quickly regained it’s composure. "You’re wrong. Not even my death would save any of you. Give it up and stop trying to think of a solution that doesn’t exist."
Kaizen smirked, his eyes holding a hint of amusement, "You’re bluffing, and you’re a bad liar." And then he moved, fast. Extremely fast that no eye could follow, in a blink, he stood behind the beast, his dagger hovering above it’s heart and his other hand holding it’s shoulder as he leaned closer to whisper into the Beast’s ear.
"You can’t fight right? Your only strength is your poison, without it, you’re powerless. I wonder how many points I would get from killing a B-rank Beast. This was too easy."
Those were the last words the Beast heard before Kaizen plunged his dagger into it’s heart. The Beast let out a choked gasp, its eyes widening in disbelief. It tried to speak but only blood slipped out of its mouth, thick and black, oozing down its chin as its body trembled violently. Kaizen’s expression remained cold as he twisted the blade.
A deep, guttural sound left the Beast’s throat, a mix between a growl and a death rattle before its body collapsed to the ground with a heavy thud. The moment it hit the floor, a wave of mana burst out from its core, spreading outward like a ripple.
Kaizen stepped back and stared at the fading body. "Guess I was right."
For a second, nothing happened. Then suddenly, the twitching hunter on the ground jerked violently before falling still. One of the others grunted, coughing hard, but this time, the blood stopped coming. The dark veins on his arms began to fade slowly.
"I can breathe...shit, I can actually breathe again!" One of them cried out, stumbling to his knees as he gripped his chest in disbelief.
"The poison... it’s clearing out." Another muttered in shock, blinking rapidly as the pain in his body dulled.
Stark slowly stood up, his eyes fixed on Kaizen as he walked towards him with an expression of both disbelief and gratitude. "You saved us. How can I thank you enough for this?"
"And the way you moved back there, even I can’t move that fast with magic. Your speed was insane kid."
Damn I hate this.
Kaizen has always hated attention, he always avoided doing anything that would draw attention towards him, wether it was bad or good things he got the attention for, he never liked it. He once craved validation, when he newly started out as a hunter, but right now, he didn’t give a damn anymore. Infact, the last thing he wanted was anyone finding out about his identity, so for that, he needed to stay low.
"No need to thank me, i just wanted that man to make it to his daughter’s birthday." Kaizen said casually, gesturing to the man who’d mentioned it earlier.
Honestly, that was the only reason he decided to helo. He’d planned on just letting things play out, and the only time he would make a move would be when he needed to defend himself. But well, you could say the sob story did get to him.
"But how did you figure out that killing the Beast would dispel the poison?" They were all surrounded around him now, curious and also observing him.
"Just a guess." Kaizen replied, squatting beside the Beast’s corpse to retrieve the blue gemstone. "Look, this seems to be the strongest in here. Which means any beast left is either C or D-rank."
"I’m too exhausted to deal with anymore Beasts. We should leave the rest for the rescue team."
Being that they hadn’t found the hound stone yet, they’d had to still search for it, and during the search, they could still get attacked by Beast and would still need to fight.
"I agree, I haven’t yet recovered from the trauma that Beast put me through. I wanna return home."
"Besides, our healer is gone so I don’t advise we risk it."
Everyone nodded in agreement, but then they noticed kaizen wasn’t saying anything.
"Aren’t you coming too? You also need to recover don’t you?" One of the hunter turned to Kaizen and ask.
"Well I’ll stay. You-all can go on."
"Do you wanna get yourself killed or what?"
