Chapter 677: Sudden attack
Chapter 677: Sudden attack
"Now that’s just mean." Alex intoned as he watched Archibald turn from lively one second to ice cold the next, all because of him.
Archibald snorted as he replied. "What do you want?"
"What’s the celebration about?"
"It doesn’t concern you now, does it?"
"True," Alex admitted. "But considering I’m going to be here until things cool down in Henos, it’s unwise for me to remain ignorant of how things are done here."
Rolling his eyes, Archibald couldn’t help but accept that he had a point... as annoying as it was to accept.
"The healer died. We are celebrating her journey through life."
"The who?"
"The old lady that treated you."
"Ah." Alex nodded in understanding.
It was basically one of those cultures where death wasn’t seen as a bad thing and instead was celebrated, especially when the person who died had lived a good life.
"If that’s all, I’d like for you to leave. You aren’t invited."
Raising his hands in surrender, Alex turned to leave only for a slight tremor to occur the next moment.
It continued with each passing moment, growing stronger causing Archibald to curse out loud as he rose to his feet.
Alex glanced around to find the villagers hurrying toward their homes in a desperate ditch to avoid something.
He thought to ask why they were panicking only to pause as he realized that the tremors were familiar.
The next moment, he instinctively glanced towards the edge of the valley they were situated in.
There, a series of blazing fireballs rushed towards them at breakneck speed.
"Fuck!" Archibald panicked at the sight while Alex immediately acted.
He snapped, intending to teleport the entire village away from the blast sight only to be repelled by the Quillion present in the village.
"Damn it." He cursed as he quickly snapped again, this time allowing Humphrey to manifest outside the village to avoid interference from the Quillion present in the village.
The shadowed Humphrey acted the moment he laid eyes on the fireballs, swiftly transmuting air in a bid to bend space... alas, the fireballs weren’t ordinary.
The attempt failed spectacularly and they passed Humphrey unimpeded, with one piercing through him, causing his form to dissipate, returning him into Alex’s shadow.
The third snap that followed took Alex away from the village center towards Victoria’s position just in time for the fireballs to hit home.
The resulting explosions wrecked everything with the shockwaves knocking everyone off their feet.
Victoria was the first to recover with Alex following not too long after.
"We need to run!" Victoria exclaimed as she helped Alex to his feet, the latter of which was still trying to get rid of the ringing in his ears.
He instinctively looked around, his eyes falling on the devastation that remained from the unexpected attack.
Huts lay in ruins with unmoving bodies strewn about, some of which were dead judging from the injuries they’d received.
Shaking his head to get rid of the ringing, Alex snapped... or at least tried to.
A deluge of black and white erupted only to quickly recede, one again facing interference from Quillion which was what the fireballs were made out of.
"Victoria, let’s run, we need to leave here first," Alex said.
"Alright." Victoria obliged as she quickly fled the village with Alex just as a mobile city appeared at the corner of the valley.
The next instant, a powerful barrier was erected around the entire valley, essentially closing it off from the rest of the continent after which several more fireballs were shot out, this time in an attempt to carpet bomb the entire valley.
"Isn’t this a bit much?" Alex couldn’t help but ask as he stared at the incoming fireballs with a depressed look on his face.
To this small village hidden at the center of a valley, the sight of the incoming fireballs was equivalent to an apocalyptic scene.
Clicking his tongue, Alex freed himself from Victoria’s hold and snapped, this time with another idea in mind.
A glacier of black ice rapidly appeared in the way of the fireballs, taking the explosions while rapidly dissipating.
Alex kept the glacier for as long as he could, allowing the verdant valley to survive the attack.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Alex got one thing clear.
As long as he kept his distance from the Quillion and made use of abilities like Frozen Twilight, he would be able to deal with the fireballs.
Alas, it seemed the mobile city was done with the flaming volleys as its gates parted ways, revealing its insides after which several barbarians riding mutants charged into the valley, heading straight for the village.
"Do we help them?" Victoria asked with Alex replying.
"What do you think?"
Meanwhile, in the village, those Alex thought were dead, got back on their feet, their injuries healing at a rapid pace only to be covered up by fur.
With the light of the Nighteye shining down on them, the villagers slowly began to turn into something else as their bodies were covered in fur and their irises changed from black to a sickly yellow.
Underneath the fur, blue lines following the same path as their veins bulged out.
Archibald, upon seeing this, grew excited only to pause as he realized something.
The transformation was incomplete... The experiment was a failure.
Though the villagers showed early signs of transforming into werewolves, it was far from the mythical werewolves that once walked the lands.
They were more like abominations, mistakes that should have never been made.
Some of the villagers dropped dead, mostly the young and the old, the fur falling off their skin, allowing them to die as humans.
Those that remained, the youths, let out bestial howls before charging at the first thing in their sight, namely, the approaching barbarians.
Archibald immediately retreated as he saw that they were acting on instinct.
The urge to join them surged within him but after some calculation, he understood that he was still days off before his next transformation.
