Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 675: Pushing a button
Chapter 675: Pushing a button
"Damn it, damn it, damn it!" Ulysses panicked as he tried as much as possible to fix the damage done to the submarine but try as he may, he was unable to do so.
His capabilities were lacking when it came to such complex mechanisms, especially one that involved the power of an Anti-God to work.
Clicking his tongue in annoyance, he paused to wonder if his only option was abandoning the ship.
But he had a feeling that if he went along with that, it would be years before he arrived at the meeting place and even many more to return.
How long would his mind remain sane before it would break, succumbing to the madness that ran rampant in this twisted dimension?
He didn’t even wish to imagine it.
Taking a deep breath, he decided not to think in that direction, as carrying out that thought was the same as giving up, and he wasn’t about to do so when people were waiting for him.
Instinctively, he reached for the talisman that Ana had made for him.
Thankfully, it remained undamaged, and at this time, when despair gnawed at his heart, it helped to keep him focused.
Clenching it tight, he first rushed to his room to put on a new set of clothes, considering his previous ones had been burned off, and then, he returned to the deck, intent on doing something stupid.
The submarine was blessed by the Goddess of Automation, that was what allowed it to work as it did while repelling negative forces.
It acted somewhat like a compartmentalized version of Cinerath.
Giving that understanding, even if it was damaged, as long as the blessings remained, it would still be able to work.
However, the Goddess wasn’t exactly around to bless it.
But what if another deity blessed it?... Or rather, what if someone with the essence of a deity blessed it?
Of course, Ulysses had never actively tried to utilize the essence within him.
It was more a passive act that allowed him to understand languages and access the knowledge of the Nester family, but regardless, since it could be done passively, then there was a chance of it being actively utilized... right?
Ulysses hoped so.
He grabbed hold of the steering wheel and was just about to begin the process when he felt something causing him to glance back.
There, the Fixer stood, his expression quickly darkening as he saw the state the submarine was in.
"How did you..."
"Thousands of years of innovation along with the greatest blessings of the goddess, yet you did not even manage to maintain it for a year!... What is wrong with you humans!" The Fixer scolded.
"It’s not my fault." Ulysses quickly tried to defend himself. "I was attacked."
"That is no excuse!... The only thing that should be able to damage this ship to such an extent has to be on par with Demigods and higher!... So tell me, did you by any chance come across a Demigod or a creature of equivalent strength?"
"That... no."
"Then how did this happen!"
"Abyssals, they attacked and tore a hole through the hull."
"Why did you allow them to get close enough to do that?"
Exasperation took over as Ulysses replied. "Damn it, I tried to evade them but this thing isn’t exactly easy to maneuver."
"You could have just shot them down."
"How could I have... wait what?"
The Fixer rolled his eyes as he stepped forward and shoved Ulysses aside. "Step aside, I’ll deal with this."
After saying that, he took out his box of tools and began to fix the damage.
"How long would this take?"
"Based on the amount of damage, give or take, four to five days in Eventide time."
"Damn it."
"Don’t even dare. You were the one that damaged it." The Fixer shot back forcing Ulysses to raise his hands in surrender.
At least now, he was assured that the submarine would be fixed.
The chances that he would have been able to continuously tap into the divine essence within him until he found the Lord of Flesh and Blood and then returned back to Eventide was radically low.
Letting out a sigh, Ulysses was about to change topics when he sensed something causing him to panic.
"Damn it, they are back."
As he spoke, an ear-piercing screech echoed in the distance, quickly closing in on the submarine.
"We have to prepare to fight them," Ulysses said as he turned to face the Fixer only to find the Automaton focused on his work, not even reacting to the looming danger.
Realizing that he might have to fight the insectoids alone, Ulysses clenched his jaw.
He had no choice if he wished for the Fixer to continue repairing the damage to the submarine.
So he not only had to take on the insectoids alone, he also had to ensure they didn’t bother the Fixer.
A daunting challenge but one he had no choice but to go up against.
Taking a deep breath, he turned to leave.
"You stay here." He said, righteously. "I’ll handle the abyssals. If I die... you should run away."
Just as he took a step forward, The Fixer spoke up. "Boy, if you don’t sit your butt down..."
"But..."
"Just shut your mouth and push that button over there." The Fixer said while pointing at a red button nestled amid several others at a corner of the ship.
"What does it do?" Ulysses asked as he approached the button.
The Fixer sent a glare his way and he immediately did as instructed.
The next instant, there was a whirring sound and after that, the sound of steam being released.
Several hatches opened on the body of the submarine, revealing cannons but they weren’t like the ones that needed cannonballs as these ones utilized ambient energy.
The next instant, several beams of light were shot out, erasing the insectoid flood approaching the submarine.
"What in the world..." Ulysses could hardly believe what he’d seen as he stared at the sight in utter disbelief.
The Fixer snorted. "Now you see why I said that such things shouldn’t have been a problem."
