Chapter 282: Chapter 284: Hosting a Guest_1
Jiang Wanqiu didn’t quite believe it, "Really? Then why haven’t you gone on a blind date?"
"I’ve been busy before, you can arrange it now," Xue Lingqing relented.
Upon hearing this, Jiang Wanqiu’s mood brightened instantly, "Deal! You think the city girls are too delicate, so I’ll find you one from the countryside." The girls from the countryside were also good, diligent, and easy to handle.
Xue Lingqing didn’t say anything.
Taking his silence as consent, Jiang Wanqiu set down the flower seedlings and headed out to start looking for a suitable girl.
Old Mr. Xue asked, "Where are you off to now? Weren’t you planting flowers?"
"Let the third one plant them."
"Old hag!" Old Mr. Xue cursed under his breath.
"..."
....
After Jiang Wanqiu and Xue Lingqing left.
Li Qiao tidied up the tea table, extinguished the mosquito incense, changed into fresh clothes, locked the main door, and went out wearing a sun hat and toad glasses.
She ran into Old Mrs. Qin at the head of the alley and called out, "Grandma."
Old Mrs. Qin jumped, and only after a moment did she realize the person in front of her was Li Qiao, wearing a misty blue body-hugging long dress, a fisherman’s hat, her hair down, and toad glasses, completely changing her aura. She quickly removed Li Qiao’s glasses, "You shouldn’t wear these things." They made her look like a hoodlum.
Li Qiao frowned, "The sun is too bright. Why are you back before the end of the workday?"
"The library is also getting ready for the holidays. When I saw others leaving, I left too. If the sun is too bright, you could use an umbrella instead of wearing a hat and letting your hair down, it’s hot." Old Mrs. Qin took Li Qiao by the hand and headed home, "And that dress doesn’t look good on you, choose something looser."
It wasn’t that she didn’t trust her granddaughter-in-law’s character; it was that the dress was too revealing of her figure.
What if real hoodlums approached her?
Better to dress conservatively for safety.
Li Qiao looked down, "It doesn’t look good? I spent a long time choosing it."
"Where are you planning to go?" Old Mrs. Qin didn’t pursue the subject and instead asked, "Do you have a meeting with classmates?"
"Not exactly a meeting, nor am I looking for classmates." Li Qiao told Old Mrs. Qin about Qin Jin learning to drive.
Old Mrs. Qin’s face lit up with joy, "That’s wonderful. Jin has finally made something of himself." She had been working for a while now and often heard her colleagues talking about getting their driver’s licenses. Getting recommended for a driving course wasn’t easy, and some people worked for years without getting a recommendation slot.
For Jin to get a turn only a few months into his job was remarkable.
With a driver’s license, his salary would probably see a significant jump.
....
When Li Qiao got home, she changed into a loose-fitting white dress.
Old Mrs. Qin said, "That’s pretty!" She looked both well-behaved and gentle.
The previous dress was too mature and might attract the attention of perverts.
Li Qiao said, "I’m off then." She quietly snatched up the toad glasses from the table and ran off.
She really loved those glasses.
They made her feel cool.
She didn’t want to give them up.
Li Qiao went to the Information Department and found Counselor Xiang.
Counselor Xiang’s eyes lit up when she saw her, "You look so pretty in that outfit. Hey, pretty people stand out no matter what they wear, unlike me. I look in the mirror every day wishing I could change my face."
Li Qiao said, "I think you’re very beautiful."
"You’re just sweet-talking me. How did you do on your final exams?"
Li Qiao shared her results.
Counselor Xiang gave a thumbs up, "Awesome! The first time I saw your test paper, I knew you were no ordinary student."
Li Qiao grinned, "Are you free tonight?"
"I’m free. Why? What’s up?"
"I’d like to treat you to dinner." Li Qiao then told Counselor Xiang about Qin Jin being recommended for a driving course.
Counselor Xiang was shocked, "He got a recommendation that quickly? Your boyfriend is really capable." She had underestimated Qin Jin before, thinking he was just a country bumpkin who knew a few characters. Thanks to the Top Scholar’s wife’s help, he got his accounting certification.
But silently, he had secured a recommendation.
"Wasn’t it you who recommended him to your relatives?" Li Qiao asked.
Counselor Xiang was perplexed, "I’ve never taken care of such things. I’ve been busy preparing for my wedding with my partner recently; I haven’t even contacted any relatives."
Li Qiao felt extremely pleased upon hearing this.
The partner chosen by fate was indeed different.
Even without much formal education, her abilities far surpassed those of her peers.
Look, she had only been at the transportation unit for a short while, and she had already obtained a recommendation letter for a driving license.
She asked, "When are you getting married?"
"On the 10th next month. Come with your partner then."
Li Qiao readily agreed, "Have you taken your wedding photos?"
"I don’t dare to take wedding photos, just a standard two-inch photo. I actually want to wear a wedding gown, but I can’t. Being reported would be terrible," Counselor Xiang said helplessly.
Li Qiao thought you could wear a wedding gown in the city, "What will you wear for your wedding?"
"A traditional jacket and pants. What about you? What will you wear when you get married?"
"Cotton-padded jacket and pants," Li Qiao said gloomily.
As they chatted, Li Qiao made a date to eat dinner at the Spring Restaurant at five-thirty that evening and added, "You can bring your partner."
"Sure!"
....
After Li Qiao left, she took a bus to the downtown department store to buy a couple of cool mats and cooling pillows.
Upon getting off the bus, a voice that was both strange and familiar echoed in her ears.
"Li Qiao!"
Li Qiao turned her head; it was Cheng Shuqin, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time.
Cheng Shuqin approached, "You caused me to repeat a year of school and yet you’re still living a carefree life."
Li Qiao laughed sarcastically, "Who really caused trouble for whom?" If she hadn’t been capable of defending herself, she would have been in a dire situation the day she encountered the hooligan.
She might even have dragged Professor Xue into it.
Cheng Shuqin replied, "Weren’t you unharmed?"
Li Qiao said nothing, turned her head, and walked away. She entered the department store and chose two cool mats of the right size, along with three cooling pillow pads, including delivery charges, and had someone carry them home for her.
After arriving home, Old Mrs. Qin greeted her with a beaming smile and said, "I was just thinking of buying these in my spare time these days."
Li Qiao smiled, "I also bought some of the snacks you love to eat."
Old Mrs. Qin’s smiling face couldn’t hide her delight, and she said to the delivery person, "Just put it on the table."
"Sure."
Li Qiao poured a large cup of tea, "Have some tea."
"Thanks a lot." The person drank it in one gulp and then took their leave.
The grandmother and granddaughter busied themselves wiping down the cool mats and tidying up the bed.
Suddenly, Old Mrs. Qin asked, "Why are there fewer flowers in the house?"
Li Qiao replied, "I gave them to Madam Xue."
Old Mrs. Qin scoffed, "Your Madam Xue has been eyeing our flowers for a long time." When they were first planted, she had wanted to give some to her, but Jiang Wanqiu declined, stating she had no time to take care of them. Yet once the flowers bloomed, she suddenly found the time.
Li Qiao added, "I also gave her some flower seeds."
Old Mrs. Qin said, "You gave them away? I was thinking of taking them back to our hometown and scattering them in front of our house. A big patch of flowers would look so beautiful."
Li Qiao responded, "The seedlings wouldn’t survive the village chickens and ducks pecking at them."
Old Mrs. Qin thought about it and agreed, adding that even if the flowers did bloom, the children would pick them.
Li Qiao also reported to Old Mrs. Qin that she and Qin Jin wouldn’t be home for dinner that evening and explained why.
Old Mrs. Qin planned to eat at the school cafeteria; she didn’t want to bother cooking just for herself.
.....
Around five o’clock.
Qin Jin got off work and eagerly shared his joy with Li Qiao, "I’ve already submitted the documents. After they review my personal criminal record, I’ll get a mentor to teach me driving. Oh, you’ve laid out cool mats."
"Qiaoqiao bought them." Old Mrs. Qin worriedly said, "I wonder if the things you did back in your hometown will affect this. You were frequently taken in for criticism and education sessions; that’s kind of like a crime, right?"
