Chapter 269: Chapter 271: Elected_1
On Monday morning after class, Cao Liwan approached her: "Your program was selected."
"Who told you that?" Li Qiao was planning to find Xue Lingqing at noon to inquire about the result.
"Our Arts Department head." Cao Liwan was somewhat jealous; she had rehearsed for nearly two weeks, with costumes and music all meticulously prepared, considering her act flawless.
Yet, it could not compare with Li Qiao’s last-minute program submission.
She really suspected Li Qiao had pulled some strings.
Li Qiao’s eyes lit up, Selected?
Cao Liwan added, "Our head asked me to see if you’d like to join our department."
Li Qiao now understood why the other had told her this, due to an order from above, she straightforwardly refused: "Not interested."
She was only after the credits.
Joining the Arts Department would certainly bring a slew of miscellaneous tasks and would interfere with her part-time job. She had two translation drafts in hand that she hadn’t finished yet.
Cao Liwan: "Not interested? Do you know how many people want to join our department?"
"Don’t know." Li Qiao left with her books in hand.
After getting her meal in the cafeteria and sitting down to eat, she saw Xue Lingqing’s figure when she was almost finished: "Professor Xue."
The surrounding people all looked her way.
Xue Lingqing curled his lips into a smile, sitting down with his tray opposite her: "Your program was chosen."
"I just heard it from a student in the Arts Department, and she also invited me to join them. What do you think, is it good?" asked Li Qiao.
"Not very good, students should prioritize their studies first."
Li Qiao: "I think the same. This weekend, I’m planning to go on an outing with Jin. Would you like to join us?"
"I have some things to attend to this weekend." Xue Lingqing tactfully declined, watching them chatting and laughing together hurt more than a stab to his heart.
"Alright then." Li Qiao finished her meal: "Professor Xue, I’m heading out first."
"Hmm."
..........
After leaving the cafeteria, Li Qiao first went to the library to read, then back to the classroom for classes. During the class break, Cao Liwan found her again: "Our head wants to meet with you and your partner in the rehearsal room after class to discuss the follow-up rehearsals."
Li Qiao replied with a brief acknowledgment.
When the appointed time came, she went alone.
In the rehearsal room was only one male student, quite handsome with tall stature.
About one meter eighty, like a jade tree facing the wind.
Upon seeing Li Qiao, he glanced behind her: "Li Qiao, right? I’m Gu Weimin, hello. Your partner didn’t come?"
Li Qiao instinctively looked around; was it only him?
Qin Jin must have finished work by now. If only she had known, she should have gone home and picked up Qin Jin to come together.
She politely responded: "Hello, Gu. My partner is busy. If you have any comments, feel free to tell me directly."
Gu Weimin raised an eyebrow, his title was usually ’Head Gu,’ but she just called him a fellow student. "Your previous performance was quite creative; who taught you?"
"I arranged it myself."
"Impressive. Cao Liwan said you don’t want to join us, why is that?"
"I have to write a thesis, work part-time as a translator, and also have my study tasks. I can’t spare the time for other things," Li Qiao truthfully replied. She needed to be in a relationship too; her boyfriend’s business had failed. On the surface, he seemed to have recovered, but whether he had truly let go, she had no idea.
She still had to comfort him.
Counting up, there were so many things to do.
"Didn’t you find time to rehearse for the program?" Gu Weimin said with a smile.
Li Qiao: "I already knew those moves; I just spent two or three days adapting them." She moved on to the main topic: "For the program, what do you think the head will plan for the rehearsals?"
Gu Weimin looked at her with a smile; she didn’t realize who he was. He said, "I am the head, and there’s no rush on this matter."
Li Qiao’s eyes widened slightly, thinking, So you are the head? If there’s no rush, why did you call me here? And with no other students around, just you and me, isn’t the impression rather improper? "If there’s nothing else planned, I’ll be leaving first."
"Leaving so soon? What about the other selected students coming later? How will I arrange their performance order?"
Li Qiao felt ashamed; she had thought he wanted to meet her alone. It turned out that there were other students too.
"If you don’t mind my asking, where’s your family from? How many people are in your household?"
"A small village, just three of us."
Whatever Gu Weimin asked, Li Qiao answered.
Upon hearing this, a glint of light flashed through his eyes. A girl from the countryside with just three people in her family, with no background—she’d be the easiest to flatter. "You’re really beautiful, where did you buy the clothes you wore yesterday?"
"Thanks, my grandma made them."
Gu Weimin let out a mocking ’oh’, so your grandma made them.
Just grandparents in the family?
Even better.
"I’m a local, my father is a surgeon, my mother is a nurse. My grandparents are still alive, they’re both retired doctors," Gu Weimin introduced himself.
Li Qiao didn’t understand, why was he revealing all this to her? He’s just like Xue Sufen—right after meeting you, they start showing off their family background. Her impression of the young man plummeted, but she responded politely on the surface, "Your family environment is really nice, mine all work the fields."
Right then, the main door was pushed open from the outside.
Li Qiao caught sight of Cao Liwan first, followed by two classmates she didn’t recognize.
Cao Liwan sized up the two of them, less than a meter apart—the atmosphere between them ambiguous. This Li Qiao was not simple at all.
Just met the minister, and already hitting it off so quickly.
Li Qiao asked, "Wasn’t your act cut from the program?"
Cao Liwan replied, "Our literary department has its own act, we don’t need to go through the selection."
Classmates filed into the rehearsal room one after another, and after getting to know each other, Gu Weimin began to arrange the order of appearance. First was the chorus, then the dance...
"Li Qiao, how about you and your junior brother go on as the sixth act? No objections, right?"
Li Qiao paused, realizing only then that ’junior brother’ referred to Qin Jin. "Sure."
After they settled on the arrangement.
Gu Weimin agreed with everyone to join the full dress rehearsal on Saturday evening: "Use the remaining time to practice more. We can’t afford any mistakes."
"Okay."
Upon receiving a positive response from everyone, Gu Weimin dismissed the group.
It was almost nine o’clock by then, and Li Qiao went straight home.
"Li Qiao, not going back to the dormitory?"
Li Qiao turned around; it was Gu Weimin. "I rent a house outside."
"Isn’t that dangerous for a girl? Let me take you home."
"Thanks, but I can take care of myself," Li Qiao said as she walked away.
Gu Weimin’s gaze followed her figure until she was out of sight.
Li Qiao returned to the courtyard.
Old Mrs. Qin had already gone to bed.
Qin Jin sat at the desk reading a book, waiting for her. "Grandma said you didn’t go to the library, why are you back so late?"
Li Qiao recounted the evening’s events.
Qin Jin said with schadenfreude, "So Xue Sufen didn’t make the cut?"
"Seems so. Each department can only have one act, and she wasn’t there to discuss the performance order tonight."
Qin Jin said, "I’ll accompany you to practice after work from now on."
"Sure," Li Qiao happily agreed, showing her concern for his work.
Qin Jin said everything was going smoothly.
Working for a unit was much more comfortable than doing business on his own.
There was no need for excessive speculation about others’ intentions, just doing your own job well was enough. However, an overly comfortable environment could make one lose the will to strive.
He still decided to take a look around whenever he had the chance, starting with trading a couple of antiques for capital, then purchasing new stock to do business.
