Chapter 255: Chapter 257: Role Model_1
"I’m not panicking, I caught the bus." said Li Qiao, sounding out of breath.
Old Mrs. Qin: "I’m going to sleep first, leave the door for Jin."
"Okay." Li Qiao replied. After washing up, she got into bed, and her racing heart gradually calmed down.
Someone must be trying to scare her on purpose!
Who would be so wicked?
Li Qiao couldn’t think of anyone, closed her eyes to sleep, and in her drowsiness felt someone next to her, a chilling coldness. She shivered and sat up in alarm.
"Qiaoqiao, what’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"
The clear and firm voice of the young man echoed in her ears.
Li Qiao patted her chest: "When did you get back? You’re so cold, I thought you were a ghost."
Qin Jin: "...I just got into bed. Did I freeze you?"
"Not really." Li Qiao lay down again.
"I got something good today when I was out with someone, let me show you." Qin Jin said excitedly as he got out of bed, lit the oil lamp, and took out a white printed porcelain bowl from the drawer: "Ming Dynasty court porcelain."
Li Qiao looked closely at the white porcelain bowl, which was painted with several chickens pecking at food, vibrant in color. "How do you know it’s from the Ming Dynasty? Where did you get it? It looks so new, like it was made last week."
Qin Jin smiled: "Don’t talk nonsense if you don’t understand. I found it while eating at a restaurant, and I had to plead to buy it. Now we’re going to be rich."
Seeing him so happy, Li Qiao chuckled along: "Only you could discover antiques while dining. Get back under the covers before you catch a cold."
Qin Jin put away the bowl and lay back down next to her: "Have all the educated youths gone?"
Li Qiao hummed in acknowledgement, paused for a second, and then told him about the eerie incident on the road after sending off the educated youths that day: "I was really scared to death then." She reminded herself that it definitely must have been a person disguised, but being in that situation was still terrifying.
After all, the person was hidden in the dark, and she was exposed to light.
Qin Jin said indignantly: "If I find out who it was, I’ll kill him."
.....
The next day, the senior year in the village started school.
Li Qiao came to school early, carrying gifts, and greeted the teachers warmly.
After offering the gifts and exchanging pleasantries, the teachers inquired about her studies.
Li Qiao answered all their questions and informed them about her skipping a grade, receiving high praise from the teachers.
"This young girl is so capable, with the momentum she has now, she’ll definitely achieve great things in the future."
Li Qiao replied modestly: "You flatter me." Who could tell about the future? Perhaps this was the highlight of her life. In private, she took out the meat ticket and handed it to the homeroom teacher.
The teacher, while refusing it, said: "I’ve already taken your gift, I can’t accept this."
Li Qiao: "It’s just a small token of my appreciation."
"I can’t accept it."
The teacher was firm, and Li Qiao did not insist, packing up the meat tickets and the food stamps. After waiting for all the students to arrive and the grade director to finish speaking, she was invited to talk.
"This is Li Qiao, last year’s Top Scholar, who after going to Beijing University, skipped to her junior year. Next, we invite her to share a few words on her learning experience."
Amidst the applause of everyone, Li Qiao went on stage.
The students in the school basically knew her. She introduced herself briefly and shared some of her learning experiences.
The students whispered among themselves.
Some envied Li Qiao for being good-looking and a good student, and took her as a role model.
Others said learning depends on talent, and her experiences, however good, were not suitable for them.
Li Qiao mentioned the educated youths in the village, only two had finished high school, one of whom had only graduated from junior high, but through their own efforts, they all got into university.
This gave a lot of confidence to students with poor grades.
But some said that the educated youths were inherently smart, and getting into university was not an exception.
After Li Qiao finished her part, she stepped down from the stage. The homeroom teacher still led the graduating class, and he pulled Li Qiao into the classroom: "It’s rare for you to have time to come by, say a few words about university life to the students, give them the motivation to study."
Li Qiao talked about stipends and scholarships.
As soon as everyone heard that there was money to be earned, they were interested.
"Senior sister, what did you do with all that money you got? Shouldn’t you donate some to help poor students in need? I heard you got married and your partner is into speculation. Shouldn’t you take care of that?"
There were people from the neighboring village in the class who had heard a few things about Li Qiao.
The villagers unanimously believed that Li Qiao’s divorce was only a matter of time.
A college student and a delinquent.
They were not on the same path at all.
Just as the homeroom teacher was about to scold, Li Qiao said, "Poor students can apply for aid from the school; I earned my money through my own efforts and have my own ways of using it." She added, "My partner is now accompanying me in my studies. He has enrolled in night school to prepare for the accounting certification, and he plans to study English next, aiming to get a driver’s license. Tell the people in your village. He is now an upstanding youth on the right path, not engaging in speculation."
She thought the business that Qin Jin was doing didn’t count as speculation, just meeting the needs of others.
"Night school? How come we don’t have that here?"
"There are many things we don’t have here. If you want to learn more, I suggest you try hard to get into university and see the world outside," Li Qiao said.
"Senior sister, how can one master English?"
"Listen attentively in class and read aloud after class."
"....."
Li Qiao stayed in the classroom to answer all sorts of questions from the students until the last period in the morning ended, and then she left.
Just as she exited the school gate, she saw a tall and straight young figure.
"Jin."
The young man smiled slightly, "Did the meeting end?"
"Yes," Li Qiao sat on the back seat of his bicycle, and the two headed to the supply and marketing cooperative, treated Gao Dagang to a simple meal, and then went home.
Old Mrs. Qin had already started packing. She told Li Qiao that she planned to go into town for a couple of days and would return to Beijing on the thirteenth.
After a brief consideration, Li Qiao agreed; arriving there on the fourteenth would mean starting school right on the fifteenth, "Okay."
Qin Jin said, "You two go first; I’ll follow in a little while."
Li Qiao, "Dealing with the fertilizer?"
"No, it’s not something I can explain in a few words."
After thinking for a bit, Li Qiao said, "Before the new year, my eldest sister mentioned that the knitting business was tough, and today Gao Dagang also said they might stop accepting goods in half a year. My eldest sister’s family has many children and got less land. Without the knitting business, life would definitely be tight. When you deal with fertilizer, could you find a way for my brother-in-law to make some extra money?"
Qin Jin replied, "Traveling far isn’t very safe. It’s better to stay home and collect dry goods. Liu Er is collecting mushrooms, I’ll ask him to include your brother-in-law."
Li Qiao smiled, "That would be great." Gathering mushrooms was easier, with less risk, and the pay wasn’t too shabby.
.....
Li Qiao went inside to pack her luggage, having just finished folding all her clothes.
"Is Li Qiao at home?"
A clear voice came through.
Hearing Hu Xiufang’s voice, Li Qiao stepped out and said, "I’m here, a rare visitor indeed. I thought you had forgotten about me." Everyone had written to her during school except Hu Xiufang. She had taken the initiative to write, but never received a reply.
"How could I?" Hu Xiufang said, "I wanted to come during the vacation, but a persistent cold kept me away, worried I might infect you."
Li Qiao showed concern, "Are you feeling better now?"
"I’m better."
Li Qiao then asked, "Did you receive my letter?"
"What letter? I didn’t get one. I wrote you three times, and you never replied," complained Hu Xiufang.
Li Qiao said, "I didn’t receive them either. Could you have sent them to the wrong address?"
"Is there another address for Beijing University?" Hu Xiufang recited the detailed address.
Li Qiao said, "That’s correct, strange, why didn’t I get your letters?"
For a while, both felt dejected.
Li Qiao asked again, "Have you been in touch with Liao Fan?"
"Yes, our families met over the New Year, and both sets of parents are quite happy."
Li Qiao commented, "...Aren’t you two moving a bit fast?" They had just met during the summer break; did they see each other often? Now they had already met each other’s parents?
