Chapter 253: Chapter 255: Attracting Wealth_1
Ma Ling doubled over laughing, "Turns out he really is your teacher." After laughing her fill, she sobered up and said, "Such a good university to have such bad students."
Li Qiao: "There are bad people everywhere, but the majority are good students." She told some amusing stories about the school and then asked as if just remembering, "Did you succeed in your match-making attempt?"
"Don’t remind me or I’ll get irritated. I had a match with one guy, from the local office, tall and handsome. He came to visit me at the squad, and damn it, Xu Feng came out from under the dissection table all covered in blood. My prospect fainted on the spot at the sight of blood and after coming to, insisted on not dating me anymore. Now I’m back to being single."
Li Qiao felt both sympathy and amusement. Was Xu Feng doing it on purpose? "Make Xu Feng compensate you with a new suitor."
"That’s exactly what I said." Ma Ling clenched her little fists, "He said if I can’t get married, he would reluctantly marry me. It infuriated me, as if I couldn’t get married without him causing trouble?...."
Ma Ling kept grumbling, and as she spoke, she started criticizing Xu Feng’s bad habits.
Li Qiao listened quietly, thinking to herself how well she knew his habits despite her complaints; it was hard to believe she didn’t have feelings for him.
....
After spending some time with Ma Ling, Li Qiao strolled over to the next room. Not seeing anyone she knew well, she greeted them and returned to the forensic department, not leaving the police station until the end of her shift and returning to the courtyard home, where the quilts had already been collected.
Qin Jin came out of the house: "Where have you been?"
Li Qiao: "Hanging out with a colleague."
"There’s an outdoor movie tonight, do you want to watch it?"
"Yes," said Li Qiao as she went inside to sew up a quilt face, and then went out to a small restaurant with Qin Jin for a meal before heading early to the outdoor movie showing to reserve a spot with their own little stools.
There were already quite a few people around.
After Li Qiao and Qin Jin sat down, they chatted casually on and off.
Suddenly, Li Qiao felt a bump on her shoulder. Annoyed, she looked back and saw a three or four-year-old kid; she decided not to make a fuss.
Less than two minutes later, she was poked again by the child from behind. Glancing down, she saw the child holding a blackened spoon, twisting his body and looking at his own clothes. The spot where she’d been poked had a black mark. Li Qiao spoke directly to the adult, "Your child has dirtied my clothes."
The other party had a decent attitude, apologizing immediately and scolding the child.
The child, slapped, pouted and began to cry.
Li Qiao thought the child would behave, but in less than a minute, she felt a pain in her back again.
She gritted her teeth and said to Qin Jin, "Jin, let’s move and sit somewhere else." As she spoke, she picked up the stool and moved back.
Qin Jin immediately followed, "Is it that naughty child? It’s not good to hit a child, just strike at the adult directly."
The woman holding the child glanced at Qin Jin, pretended to scold the child, and the child cried again.
Seeing the child, and with everyone watching, Li Qiao reasoned they wouldn’t be able to watch the film if Qin Jin really started a fight. She made an excuse, "We’re too close to the screen." She took his hand and found a new spot.
Qin Jin glared at the woman and child and moved to sit with Li Qiao in the back.
They had just put down their stools.
She keenly noticed something glittering in the earth beneath her feet.
With a flick of her hand.
Her eyes lit up with excitement.
It was a golden ring, symbolizing the rolling in of a wife’s fortune.
Li Qiao saw it too and was inwardly astounded at his ability to attract wealth.
One outdoor movie screening and they find a golden ring.
Li Qiao whispered, "I might be able to wear that."
Qin Jin: "It’s not good luck to wear something found, I’ll buy you a new one tomorrow," he paused before adding, "Why aren’t you wearing your gold bracelet again?"
"I’m afraid the villagers will ask too many questions," Li Qiao said. "Having a watch on the wrist is good enough, too much jewelry is heavy on the wrist." In truth, she wanted to wear the heirloom her grandmother gave her but was afraid of knocking it.
Qin Jin said wistfully, "The watch wasn’t from me."
Li Qiao held her forehead, the young people were jealous too. "Alright, let’s watch the movie."
....
After the movie, the two went back to stay at the courtyard home.
The next day, Qin Jin excitedly exchanged the ring for fifty-six yuan, determined to take Li Qiao shopping for new clothes.
Li Qiao refused, "I have plenty of clothes, my closet is nearly bursting. Buy it for Grandma."
"Grandma is so old, whatever she wears looks the same. She has clothes to wear, no need to buy too much."
Li Qiao could not help chuckling. If he passed on his grandmother’s words, he would inevitably face a thorough scolding. "How about, with this money, we buy some materials for the senior year students? I want to donate them to the school." Before the holiday, she had received a letter from the school, with the teachers asking when her vacation would start and when the next term would begin.
Senior year would start on the tenth day of the first lunar month.
The school wanted to invite her back to motivate the students about to take the college entrance exam.
She had originally planned to use her monthly allowance to buy them, but now that she had come into some unexpected money, she might as well use a part of it to do something meaningful.
"Donate?" Qin Jin’s mindset had not reached the realm of donating, he was reluctant to part with the money.
Li Qiao said, "Let’s go!" She pulled him towards the bookstore.
But the clerk asked for book coupons, which she did not have. So they headed to the private market for transactions instead.
She couldn’t pick out suitable second-hand materials, so she decided to buy books instead.
However, if she were to donate them to the school, the content would need to be reviewed. She wasn’t sure which content needed to be censored and did not dare to rashly donate books, to avoid giving malicious people a handle to attack.
After considering it, she went into a stationery shop and bought a stack of notebooks and five fountain pens.
The two played in the city until the afternoon before returning to Feng Family Village.
Old Mrs. Qin asked, "Why didn’t you stay in the city today?"
Li Qiao replied, "Too cold." The large house wasn’t cozy, and getting up at night was freezing.
The small earth house was warm, with a stove by the door and a hot water bottle stuffed into the bedding, making the room toasty all night.
Her gaze shifted and fell on the new bamboo basket by the well: "The bamboo basket that was brought over?"
"It was a gift from Feng Dafa’s mother."
"Which Feng Dafa?"
"Li Jinhua’s elder brother," said Old Mrs. Qin. "She said her eldest son made the bamboo basket, strong and durable, and insisted on giving me one, so I accepted. She told me that a thief had visited their home recently, with several rows of footprints near the wall, but nothing was missing inside. Jin, who do you think did it?"
Qin Jin felt a bit guilty: "How would I know?"
Old Mrs. Qin said, "You know many thieves; if you don’t know, who would?"
Qin Jin: "..." Was that an insult? He pretended to be profound and said, "The people I know now are not thieves."
Old Mrs. Qin said, "That’s best. Stay away from those who steal chickens and dogs." She warned him and then softened her tone towards Li Qiao, "You didn’t leave money in your room, did you? Are your valuables secure?"
Li Qiao replied, "They’re secured."
"That’s good."
....
In the following days, Li Qiao stayed at home, eating and sleeping to her heart’s content.
In a blink of an eye, it was the ninth day of the new year.
The young people from the city came to visit, bearing gifts.
Li Qiao happily entertained them.
Du Xinxin commented, "We haven’t seen you in half a year, and you seem like a different person, so pretty and stylish."
Li Qiao laughed softly, "You’ve also matured a lot." Cultural influences do change people. During farming, everyone looked unsophisticated, but after just half a year, both the young men and women had acquired a distinct scholarly air.
The men seemed much more composed.
The young women were more vibrant and full of life.
She asked, "Liu Jing, have you and Zou Qing gotten engaged?"
Zou Qing coughed awkwardly while Liu Jing fidgeted and replied, "We have."
Wang Nannan said, "Aren’t you afraid the school will find out?"
Li Qiao explained, "The school actually doesn’t mind this kind of thing." Although it was a rule that students must not date, everybody wrote to pen pals, ostensibly to study together and progress, but it was an open secret that frequent correspondence was considered dating.
