Chapter 234: Chapter 236: There is a Thief_1
"Today is the Laba Festival. Grandpa asked me to bring some Laba porridge for you to try." Xue Sufen entered the room, took the porridge out of the food container, and placed it on the table.
Li Qiao thanked her, took the bowl of porridge to the kitchen, scooped the porridge into a new bowl, and washed Xue Sufen’s bowl clean before returning it to her.
Xue Sufen said, "You just leave it on the table and don’t drink? I braved the snow and cold wind to bring it to you." Originally, Grandpa had asked my older brother to deliver it, but Grandma firmly disagreed, nor did she allow my younger uncle to come over, fearing that Li Qiao would gobble them both up.
Grandpa couldn’t persuade her, so it ended up being her job.
She suspected that Grandma did it on purpose, not willing to let her sons and grandsons freeze and so sent her granddaughter instead.
"I’ll drink it right now." Li Qiao took a taste with the spoon. The sweet aroma of honey dates hit her nose, and the porridge was sweet and sticky. The peanuts and lotus seeds melted in her mouth: "Delicious."
Xue Sufen said, "My grandma got up early in the morning to make it. It’s been simmering for several hours, and she only used the best ingredients."
Li Qiao said, "Thank my Grandma Xue for me." She opened the cabinet, took out the beef sauce that Grandma had made before she went back to her hometown and her own recently pickled Laba garlic: "These are for you. When it’s sunny, put the garlic outside to dry, and it will turn green very easily."
Xue Sufen said, "We have them at home; I don’t want yours."
Li Qiao put them into the food container: "They definitely won’t taste the same as those from my house. If you don’t eat it, let Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue try."
"Fine then." Xue Sufen abruptly changed the subject, "Where did you go in the car today?"
"To the publishing house to submit the translation draft."
"Is it passed?"
"Waiting for review." Li Qiao said, "Do you want to write? Poetry or prose, either is fine, I can introduce you."
Xue Sufen declined, "Not writing." She hadn’t even finished her thesis yet. "Do you know? That pregnancy test report of Cheng Shuqin we found earlier in the dorm—it was a fake.
The head teacher handed the report to her dad.
Her dad went to the doctor who made the report, and the doctor said the person Cheng Shuqin had him write it for was you. The matter blew up; the doctor even got fired by the hospital. And now, Cheng Shuqin has changed her name to Cheng Ya and transferred to study elsewhere. Her grades are top-notch; she might even come to our school next year. Be careful."
Li Qiao never anticipated there would be more to the situation with Cheng Shuqin. Her eyes deepened. "I somehow feel that the person she should be careful of is you. She targeted me to get into your good graces."
Xue Sufen: "..." You just had to bring that up! "I’m not talking to you anymore." She took the food container and left.
Li Qiao followed her.
Xue Sufen said, "No need to walk me out."
Li Qiao’s face was expressionless: "I need to lock the door."
Xue Sufen walked a few steps forward, growing angrier the more she thought about it, and angrily took out the beef sauce and Laba garlic from the food container and placed them on the ground: "I don’t want your stuff! Humph!"
Li Qiao, standing her ground, retorted: "If you don’t want it, then forget it!" She abruptly closed the door and locked it.
Xue Sufen stomped her foot, sipped her porridge, and was barred outside by Li Qiao—what an ingrate!
.....
Li Qiao picked up the beef sauce and Laba garlic, put them back in place, secured the kitchen door, and returned to her room to continue translating. Before she knew it, evening was nearing, and a thick layer of snow had accumulated at the doorway, with ample blankets of snow on the eaves and corners of the walls.
Stepping on it produced a thudding sound.
She took a broom and swept the snow clean from under the eaves.
She cooked herself a bowl of plain noodles and stirred in some beef sauce.
After dinner, she put on her warm gear and shoveled the snow in the yard to one side with a snow shovel.
It took her two hours to make two snowmen, but they looked too bare, so she found Qin Jin’s thin coat to put on one and added a scarf and a hat.
Not putting pants on the lower half seemed odd.
She went back inside to find two pieces of fabric to wrap around the lower half of the snowmen.
Now they looked more like people.
But still, it seemed lacking—right, they had no facial features.
She rummaged through her things for a brush, mixed some paints, and with the flashlight in hand, painted faces for the snowmen.
Only then did she feel satisfied and went back inside to wash up and go to bed.
In the middle of the night, Li Qiao was woken up by the barking of dogs; she was about to turn on the light when she heard the voices of unfamiliar men outside.
A sense of dread struck her.
Could there be burglars?
She immediately reached for the stick near the head of the bed and hid behind the door.
The dog scratched at the door, wanting to go out.
After hesitating for a moment, Li Qiao gently opened the door a crack, and the dog charged out, barking furiously.
A sudden cry of pain followed. "There’s a dog!" Wasn’t the dog tied up when they scoped out the place?
Then came a series of blood-curdling screams.
"Ah, oh my god, there’s a ghost!"
Immediately after, there were two thuds.
Li Qiao listened intently with perked ears; the thief must have climbed over the wall and fled.
She opened the door again, let the dog back in, then closed it and turned on the light.
The dog was already lying in its kennel, wagging its tail, its eyes gleaming as it looked at her as if boasting about having driven away the thief.
She walked over to pet the dog’s head, then went to bed herself.
When she woke up, the day was already bright; the snow had stopped, but the sky remained overcast, and one of the snowmen in the yard had toppled. Its head had rolled off to one side, its painted features making it quite unsettling to look at.
There were many footprints around, and signs of someone having climbed the wall.
After she opened the courtyard door, neighbors gathered around, some saying their pots had been stolen, others that their rice, flour, and oil were missing.
"Qiaoqiao, did your house lose anything?"
Li Qiao replied, "Nothing’s missing, but a thief did enter my place last night; they even knocked down the snowman I had worked hard on. Luckily, the dog was guarding the house."
The neighbors peered into the courtyard and were face to face with the fallen snowman’s head.
The snowman’s eyes seemed to stare straight at them.
The neighbors were terrified.
"My goodness, the snowman you made is so creepy, one would lose half their soul if they saw it in the middle of the night."
Li Qiao suddenly smiled, no wonder the thief had screamed about ghosts before running away.
......
Li Qiao dealt with the fallen snowman, swept the snow clean in front of the door, fed the dog, then locked up and headed to school.
Today was the jump-grade exam. After arriving at school, she went straight to the exam hall that Mr. Che had told her about. Inside were two male students sitting one on each side, the one on the left wearing a long woolen coat with a small parting in his hair, exuding a good temperament.
The one on the right was dressed plainly and was slightly looking down with distinctive features and fair skin.
She took the seat in the middle.
The student on the left said, "Are you here for the jump-grade exam too? Which specialty?"
Li Qiao replied, "Mathematics and Physics. How about you?"
"Mechanical engineering. My name is Song Zhixiu. What’s your name? You must be the school’s belle?" Song Zhixiu seemed quite enthusiastic.
Li Qiao said, "Li Qiao, and no, I’m not any school belle." She had looked at herself in the mirror and thought she was decent, but being a school belle was something she couldn’t claim.
"Nice to meet you, Li Qiao. Do you have a pen pal?"
"I have a husband."
Song Zhixiu couldn’t believe it, "You must be kidding, right? You look even younger than me; you’re married so early?"
The student on the right slowly lifted his head, his gaze shifting between the two of them before moving away again.
Then the teacher arrived, confirmed everyone’s specialties after calling the roll, and distributed the exam papers.
Only then did Li Qiao learn that the good-looking guy was Su Yu, a student from the Information Technology department.
Three students with three different specialties. Was the school doing this to save trouble?
In the first exam, Li Qiao took the Mathematics paper; after quickly scanning through, she found the questions were not difficult for her.
She finished answering quickly and handed in her paper, causing both of the other students in the exam hall to look up at her.
After the exam, Song Zhixiu said, "A sixty-minute test took me so long and was incredibly hard. That girl finished in half an hour; I wonder if it’s actually true?"
Su Yu responded, "She’s just sharing the hall with us. The subjects she’s tested on are different from ours. How do you know her test was difficult?"
