Chapter 83: A loser as a lover.

Laura sat in the garage, waiting for Alfred. Her pink nightdress wasn’t enough to shield her from the wind but still, she sat - waiting.

Alfred has the habit of coming back home late but today was extreme. It was past 3:am and still, there was no sight of her husband.

Could he have left me already? She asked herself and her hand on her tight shivered. He had always promised to leave her one day to a younger person if she doesn’t take care of her body and for that, she had always taken extra care of her body. Could it be that he wasn’t seeing her efforts?

From the start of their marriage, there was no love, and till the end of time, love would never blossom between them but still, she begged him to stay whenever he threatens to leave.

She wasn’t fat and for that, she doesn’t need to know that he was just waiting for weight as an excuse. The weight she doesn’t possess but still, she wants to forever please him so, even if it means for her to starve with only water, she does it.

Adams also hasn’t returned and this made her more scared. It was a win-win situation for either he had finally left her for a younger chick or something bad had happened to him.

Over the years, Alfred had only grown enemies and dumped allies - she can’t help but admire the man’s bravery or should we say stupidity.

One lonely regretful tear dropped from her eyes. She had made a lot of mistakes but she regrets only one which drops her mental state to the dust level from time to time.

Unlike Arissa, she had the choice to get married to any man of her choice. She was the only child but with the privilege of not being born into a money-minded family, she lived a normal life, without disturbance or manipulation from her parents.

As a stupid teenager, she lived wild, and when she fell for the boy next door, her parents never complained or downgraded him because to them her happiness was first over everything.

Laura fell in love with Stephen so fast. As fast as lightning, she was all dreamy for the new athlete footballer who was transferred to their school.

The girls in school respected her a lot for being the rich expensive high-class girl so the moment they realized she had eyes on the new boy with blonde hair and rich compelling smile, they all backed away to give the spoilt queen bee her way.

It wasn’t easy, but at the age of 16, two years after she knew Stephen, he finally asked her out and that was the happiest day of her life from that time on, things went slowly and smoothly between them.

But when she realized that Stephen wasn’t an affluent person as she thought but was just someone on a scholarship, leaving in a government-funded house, all excitement that came with being his girlfriend reduced.

Getting to her 18th birthday, she ordered the guards to not let him pass the entrance to her party. Five months have passed since she found out where he came from, and she wasn’t able to stand him to the point she stopped meeting with him.

So, she saw her birthday as the perfect chance to let him know that she doesn’t want him anymore so, she ordered the guards to block his way in. Her heart ached each time she mistreats him but she can’t help it.

Her parents left her to live her best life and coming back with a loser at the end of the day wasn’t part of that privilege.

It was on that same eighteen birthday she met Alfred and the man seemed taken by her already as he gave her all of his attention even when he noticed her mind was elsewhere.

Alfred was twenty-two and already at college while Stephen was just two months older than her. She loved Stephen, she knows it but at she do not want to look like a loser before her cousins on the day she would bring a loser as her lover before them.

Spending little time with Alfred, he bragged about being her secret admire for the longest time and was just waiting until she turns eighteen. Rolling her eyes at his too many speeches, she flatly refused him.

He was also the son of a business tycoon and that’s why he was at her party without her invitation but she had no desire to even look at him twice.

Alfred did not give up and from then, she began to receive expensive gifts from him, occasional flowers and chocolates. But sadly after all of that, their relationship did not move further, and neither did she mend her relationship with Stephen.

Stephen maintained his relationship with Laura despite the changes from her. He understood she wanted to end their relationship.

He wasn’t stupid after all, he was just waiting for her to come out clean about it so they would end it formally or try amendments since he doesn’t have a clue why she changed so much.

There at the college, she met Beatrice a few months after she formally ended things with Stephen. Although it hurt her, she bluntly told him to stay away from her and also, she explained the reason why they would not work.

"For us to be together, love isn’t enough," Laura smiled as she used the back of her palm to clean her tears she perfectly remembered her line on that day and his pained eyes haunted her while her body trembled.

There was a denial from Stephen and he pointed out she loved him but she blatantly refused. Proving it to him, two months after the breakup, she started going on dates and vacations with Alfred.

After graduating from college, there was no still single part of her that loved Alfred. There were nights when she was tempted to call Stephen so they would go back to how they were before.

There was no pressure on her to get married so, so on a movie night out, Beatrice introduced Stephen to her and smiled speechlessly as she introduced him to Laura.

Laura and Stephen exchanged a handshake and Stephen kept it all formal as if he had never met Laura. Laura could not help but smile with pain.

When Laura asked if Beatrice should know about their past, Stephen was all about claiming he doesn’t know who she was.

It hurt. She was hurt when she heard that but seeing the smile and happiness on Stephen’s face anytime she sees them together, she decided not to let Beatrice know that she was once Stephen’s girlfriend.

With hurt, she bargained a lifetime contract marriage with Alfred - they would be married until they get tired of each other.

Alfred was all kind to her in the first eight years of her marriage until her parent’s sudden death and the moment she took over the family company, the real scheming, and manipulating Alfred came out to reality.

Shutting her eyes, Laura pushed her regretful memory to the back of her mind and continued waiting for her husband to come home.
