Chapter 147: Cliché?

** Harper **

Eli seemed to be driving quite a bit faster than usual on their way back. Harper didn’t mind though. He had always been a good driver since high school, and what was the point of getting a Ferrari if you can’t enjoy the speed?

The sunset had followed them the entire way, painting the clouds at the end of the road a fiery shade of scarlet that slowly turned into glowing streaks of hot pink, then magenta, then purple. By the time they reached the hotel, the sky was a swathe of violet with only a glimmer of gold over the horizon, and the dusk light made everything look softer ... including the look in Eli’s eyes as he parked the car at the valet and held the door open for Harper.

She took his outstretched hand this time, not bothering to check if anyone else from work was around to see them. With a wide smile, they laced their fingers together and strode straight to his suite.

"Oh, I get to see the master bedroom at last?" Harper said in somewhat exaggerated excitement when she saw where they were heading inside. That room was the only place within the suite she hadn’t been to yet. The door had been closed since the night before, which made her assume that perhaps Eli didn’t want her to see the unorganized state of his private space.

Eli, on the other hand, arched an eyebrow at her exclamation. "I intend for you to do much more than ’see’ while you’re in there, Harper," he chuckled. With a look that spoke of sinful promises, he opened the door.

And then Harper’s steps froze right over the threshold. Her mouth literally fell open.

The large room in front of her was a sea of flowers, decorated from wall to wall with colorful leis. Purple orchids ran along the doorframe, arched into a beautiful garland that led toward the pink and orange plumerias decorating the entry table and wardrobe. A cascade of jasmines draped over the floor lamp and the desk, their white blooms tinted a shade of blush under the warm light. Red kika blossoms occupied the nightstands, and on the bed, rose petals covered almost every inch of flat surface, turning the mattress into a blanket of the most luxurious red velvet.

"What ..." It took Harper a long moment to remember to even breathe, and when she finally did, the heavenly scent of so many fresh blossoms filled her nostrils, more intoxicating than any perfume she could ever imagine.

A gentle hug closed around her from behind. "It’s pretty cliché, I know." Eli chuckled with a hint of ... nervousness? "But my options were a bit limited by the hotel ... and time ... so ..."

Harper could only press a hand to her heart to try to calm down its wild thrashing. Cliché? Only the best kind. Talk about 1000 Romantic Things to Do Before You Die — the scene in front of her had to rank right there at the top! And to pair it with that beach picnic in the sunset ... Did he have any idea how much this evening was already off the chart?

"If all those clichés in your mind are like this, Eli, you’ll have to show me the rest of them one by one. Very soon." Harper couldn’t help but tease him a little, and she laughed when he blinked in utterly innocent surprise. "I love it," she assured him, turning around in his arms to press a kiss to his lips.

This was no longer the gentle, comforting kiss that they shared on the beach. The romantic atmosphere perfected by the roses and leis was affecting her, and as soon as their lips met, she captured all of his scent and taste eagerly, delving in deep to savor it and brand it with her own. The feeling of him enveloping all her senses felt like the last missing piece that completed the surreal evening, and she wished there was a way to make this moment last forever. If she could only—

She was lost in that dreamy thought when suddenly, the ground beneath her dropped, and she yelped in shock just before a pair of familiar strong arms wrapped around her, sweeping her off of her feet.

"This is part of the cliché package. Didn’t see it coming?" Eli chuckled as he carried her toward the center of the room. Ever so carefully, he lowered her onto the bed of roses.

Velvet petals brushed against her bare shoulders and arms, the sensation soft and unexpectedly titillating. Harper giggled a little, half from the tiny tickles and half from the surprise "cliché package" she just received. "I feel like a spoiled princess," she said, inhaling the exquisite scent all around them and smiling up at the man looming above her. "What’s next in the package? Where is my Prince Charming, or my knight in shining armor?"

It was Eli’s turn to laugh then, his eyes gleaming just like shining armor, and from the depth of that gleam ... Harper thought that she caught a hint of something fleeting. Something she had never seen before.

The way he looked at her was soft, so soft that she felt as if she was drifting in the liquid warmth of that tender gaze hugging her, cradling her. It was nothing like the usual look he gave her every Saturday — dark and heated and full of desire, promising to devour her savagely with hunger and need — but this utterly different gaze turned her body weak and boneless all the same, and she could hear the sound of her heartbeat growing louder and louder in her ears, losing all hopes of a steady rhythm.

"Your Highness." Eli’s voice pulled her back from the half daze. His eyes twinkled once more as he leaned over her, brushing his lips over hers. "Command me as you wish. How may I fulfill your desires tonight?" he asked in a light whisper against her mouth.
