Chapter 24: Am I a Waste of Time?

(TYLER)

Sasha must have noticed how uneasy I am. "It will work." He rumbles. "And we will all be fine, trust me." "I wouldn’t have dragged Tyler here if I thought it wouldn’t work. What else would be the reason to go through with all this nonsense?"

"I’m ready to step into Father’s shoes. This is what I’ve been trained to do my entire life. Everything will be fine once we finalize the wedding. You need to trust me to handle this." He says with a proud tilt of his head.

"Yes." Lucia nods. She has to agree with her son because if she doesn’t, who ever will?

"I don’t envy you," Jericho says with a wry grin on his face.

Sasha shifts slightly and then turns his attention to me. "We can go see Father now if you’re done eating."

"He isn’t done yet, let him eat, he needs to build some muscle," Lucia says, glancing at my half-full plate. If only Sasha knew how nerve-wracking the thought of meeting his father is, he wouldn’t have brought it up. Especially now. He wouldn’t have given me time to settle in, perhaps then, I’d know what I’m walking into.

"N...no, really. I’m fine." I lie, rising up and straightening my t-shirt to make sure it doesn’t cup my belly. I doubt if they know I’m pregnant. I wonder if they will approve of the wedding if they find out. If only they knew their crazy son wouldn’t leave me for other better omegas. I have to remember to ask Sasha if they know about my pregnancy when we are alone.

"It was nice to finally meet you, Tyler." Lucia smiles at me.

"The pleasure is all mine." I force a smile.

"Sorry about the serious talk."

"It’s alright." I shrug. "I needed to know the truth."

"Great." She nods. That gives me the impression that she is pleased with my response. "So, what do you say we meet later in the evening to catch up some more? My husband goes to bed early because of his sickness, and my sons often disappear in the evening to tend to God knows what. Let’s talk some more later?"

"Oh... uhm...alright." I force another smile again. At this point, I’m afraid my jaw will soon begin to hurt. The thought of spending time with Lucia freaks me out. What are we supposed to talk about then? Or did she notice I am pregnant and want to question me about it? Women have instincts and I’m getting a frail idea that maybe she noticed after all.

Or not. Who knows?

I doubt she could have survived a marriage with a mobster if she were the warm loving soul she pretends to be.

"We have so much to discuss. Even though this is a sham wedding, we still need to make it look real. You should be a part of the planning." She smiles at me.

I am silent for a beat. In truth, I don’t have an answer for her. The way she is gleeful about the wedding makes it seem real and gives me the hint that she isn’t even aware that her son blackmailed me and threatened my life if I didn’t agree to this marriage. Perhaps she thinks I’m doing it for money. Or maybe status.

"Mama, that won’t be necessary," Sasha says gruffly. "This isn’t even a real wedding. It should be a simple one."

I gaze at Sasha. Not because I want to be part of the planning, but because I wonder what he knows about weddings. He doesn’t look like the type who would be thrilled about weddings, let alone his own, a real one. I wonder what he means by a simple wedding. I can’t shake the thought that all he has ever known in his life is violence and threats. He shouldn’t even be giving his thoughts about the wedding plans. If anything, I think he should sit back, keep being the entitled asshole he is and watch all the work being done for him.

"I still think Tyler should have a say in it all." Lucia scowls.

"Tyler doesn’t give a shit about the wedding." Sasha snaps.

"Have you asked him?" Jericho interjects, rolling his eyes. I’m glad someone else is beginning to notice what an asshole he is.

Sasha turns his attention to me and pins me with a cool stare. "Tyler, do you give a shit about the wedding?"

Lucia and Jericho turn to face me too. Heat rushes to my cheeks. Once again, I’m the centre of attention and I don’t like it. I hate having them argue over me. It makes them gawk at me and I’m sure one of them will soon find out what I’m hiding beneath this giant t-shirt. "I can discuss a few things with your mother," I say, just to get the attention off me.

"Perfect way to waste time, don’t you think?" Sasha blurts out.

"Now, is it?" A frown works up my face. I wonder why he has to be pissy all the time. I get that this is a sham wedding, but why does he have to be like this all the time? What irks him if Lucia and I talk over a few details about the wedding? I could care less about the ceremony, but if it makes Lucia happy, what does it hurt?

"Yes!" Sasha snaps.

"Why is it a waste of time?" I almost cross my arms over my chest but then I remember it will reveal my rounded belly, so I drop them. "Because I’m a waste of time?"

Sasha holds my gaze and his brows knit together. I can tell that my response irritated him. "Do whatever you wish, just don’t bother me with the details."

"Yet here I was thinking we could cuddle and talk about the flavour of the cake and the wedding theme." I huff

"Gotcha!" Jericho mocks Sasha, grinning wolfishly.

Sasha scowls at his brother and then shifts his attention to me. "You’re ready to meet Father?"

"Yes, Sasha. I’m ready whenever you are."

"See you later, Tyler." Lucia holds my hand and smiles at me

"S...sure. I’m looking forward to it." I ignore Sasha and lie to Lucia. I’m not looking forward to meeting her in the evening because I know it will be awkward as hell. But then again if I’m going to be part of this family for the next five years, I need to at least pretend to be friends and try to fake some kind of a relationship with them.

’Tyler," Sasha yells impatiently. "I don’t have all day, hurry up!"

I fight a grin, satisfied that I’ve managed to piss him off. I know better to not grin, so I school my face and follow him out of the room.
