Chapter 669: Chapter 17 Dr. Chen_1
Zheng Qing met Su Shijun at the entrance of the two-dimensional laboratory.
At that time, this senior parliamentarian from Under the Moon Council was conversing with an ethereal figure hovering mid-air. The duo were talking rapidly, their voices somewhat strange. Intermittent sizzling noises akin to electric disturbances were mixed within their conversation. Despite the translation matrix enveloping the entire island, Zheng Qing was still unable to comprehend what they were discussing.
However, compared to their conversation’s content, Zheng Qing was more intrigued by the false figure hovering in mid-air.
Initially, he thought it was a ghost.
As one of the five main races of the Under the Moon Council and one of the most common, oldest magical creatures within the Wizard Community, the sight of ghosts around the campus was no rarity — amidst the bookshelves in the secluded sections of Book Mountain Library; on the windowsills at the corridor’s ends in teaching buildings; and on the hillside behind the campus, brimming with weeds and possibly housing thousands of magician bones, such magic form of life could be spotted.
The most noticeable characteristics of ghosts were their pearly, foggy-like, false bodies. Many aged ghosts usually had green ghost-flames following them.
Just like the false figure engaged in conversation with Su Shijun — it also had a false form and was surrounded by strings of light points. However, unlike ghosts, this false figure was not pearly but exuded a faint purple halo, resembling a three-dimensional projection. The light points around it, upon close inspection, were just some bluish green glows, not ghost-flames.
This is not a ghost, the young cost student repeated his judgment in his heart.
Perhaps picking up on his inner thoughts, the pleasantly chatting Su Shijun turned his head to glance at Zheng Qing and gave a slight nod. Then, turning back to the false figure, he introduced, "This is the original form of the DYDX-S-NO.1 experimental body, Zheng Qing."
Before Zheng Qing had the chance to critique the long string of strange modifiers preceding his name, he noticed the false figure turn its head, revealing a pair of extraordinarily clear and bright eyes. Then he became even more certain that this was not a ghost.
Although ghosts can maintain exact forms and even facial features, they could never have such clear and bright eyes. Most ghosts have milky-white eyes with somewhat dull looks.
This is the third director of the ’Laboratory of Examining Various Solutions of Single-string Life-form Breaking Out from the Dirichlet Membrane in 1+1 Dimensional Space-time’, also my predecessor, Dr. Chen Ang," explained Su Shijun whilst turning back to introduce the floating figure in mid-air to Zheng Qing.
"In fact, I prefer calling it the ’Laboratory of Feasibility Analysis and Multi-model Comparison of Homologous Life-form Appearing under Mapping Conditions in the Observable X-Y Dimension with Added Z Dimension’," the floating figure, Dr. Chen, supplemented with a warm smile, "This is the name I have chosen, and the older generation of the institution has grown accustomed to it... It also fits better with the purpose we have established."
Upon hearing this, Su Shijun raised his head with a dismissive hmph, "As the current director of the laboratory... it is my right to change the name."
Dr. Chen shrugged his shoulders as a gesture of compliance.
With a frown, it took Zheng Qing quite a while to recall some vague impressions.
"I remember, you said this Dr. Chen... um, is a bit inconvenient, right?" The tongue-tied young cost student nearly blurted out the words ’gone insane.’
He had a feeling that Dr. Chen’s gaze flickered at him for a moment, probably just an illusion.
"If you’re referring to the part where he ’went mad’," Su Shijun casually conveyed what the young wizard meant and chuckled, "There’s no need to beat around the bush. In front of this guy, if you have something that could contribute to his experiments, he wouldn’t mind a little offence."
Zheng Qing tugged at the corner of his mouth awkwardly, revealing a slightly embarrassed smile.
"I didn’t go mad," objected the doctor floating in the air, "It’s just that there are too many isoform residues in the two-dimensional world, causing an abnormality when aligning the world lines with timelines... A few more experiments and slight adjustments would suffice."
"Experiments?" Su Shijun raised his eyebrows, full of suspicion, "If I remember correctly, the University Professor Joint Committee and the Applied Magic Research Institute have both issued a mortality notice. It strictly forbids a specific person from appearing within a 100-meter vicinity of any laboratory... How are you going to conduct experiments?"
"That’s why I’m standing 100 meters away from the entrance of your lab," explained Dr. Chen. Smiling, he gestured towards the distance between him and the building. He then sighed regretfully, "This world is indeed disappointing... Even a privileged pig can become a marshal in the sky while an unprivileged wizard has to sit idle in their residence."
"That’s because you chant ’dissection is the only standard to examine the truth’ in your lab every day," Su Shijun taunted, "Have some restraint. If you hadn’t dissected your own soul into hundreds of thousands of pieces, I probably wouldn’t have ended up being the one in charge of this lab... Look at you now, walking around as a three-dimensional projection without a normal form. Aren’t you afraid of being blown away by the wind?"
"The winds don’t affect my thought entity, so you need not worry," interjected Dr. Chen, softly but firmly, "Also, I didn’t dissect my soul into hundreds of thousands of pieces. To be precise, there are only 129,600 pieces. Precision is vital in our experiments... Math has to be accurate. Otherwise, it’s not experimenting but betting on luck."
Upon hearing this, the beautiful Su resignedly scoffed.
"Enough with the chit-chat!" Su boisterously slapped Zheng Qing’s shoulder, declaring, "If your paperwork is in order, I can provide the complete experimental data... however, this person is mine! You can’t take him away!"
Zheng Qing cautiously furrowed his brow, unsure of whether he should politely dispute Su’s words — he considered himself as an independent and free entity, not someone’s possession.
Of course, considering being referred to as ’her man’ by Su, the cost student decided to endure this injustice and chose not to argue.
Ignoring Zheng Qing’s complicated feelings, Su Shijun turned to him and explained, "Remember when that damned shadow of yours exploded and escaped my lab a few days ago? Your shadow should be considered the second experimental body to truly break away from the two-dimensional space... the first one is right in front of you."
"So now, the first successful experimental body wants to talk to you, share some tips about ’extrication’. If possible, he also hopes to slice off a small piece of your shadow to conduct some minor experiments..."
Zheng Qing turned pale at once.
Although Su’s words were understated, it wasn’t his first time dealing with these ’mad researchers’ — considering slicing him was mentioned, who knows what would happen if he fell into their hands!
