Chapter 635: Chapter 304 Unfortunate and Doubters_1
Zheng Qing looked at the rough bark in front of him, sighing gloomily.
He knew only too well that his prophecy skills were rather average, unfit to be an Auxiliary Hunter, but he didn’t expect it to be this bad.
Although on the way following the Tiger Demon, he squeezed a bunch of Cao herbs to calculate every ten or so minutes, halting only when he was sure there was no wizard ahead, he still stepped into this trap.
Yes, he had just stepped into a rather mediocre trap.
A few yellow, substandard Binding talismans were buried under the grass, with an uneven rune array engraved on the brown bark by an engraving knife. If this were Assistant Hilda’s practice class, Zheng Qing would never have been fooled by such a crude trap; or if he had been floating forward with the help of the cloud climbing talisman, he would definitely not have stepped on these papers.
But, there are no buts in life.
A mere ten meters from this eucalyptus tree, the cloud-climbing talisman had just run out of power. Just when Zheng Qing saw the cooling shade ahead provided by the tree, he took a few steps forward.
One step, two steps, three steps.
Then a green light flashed, and several tendrils burst out of the void, tying up the unsuspecting wizard tightly. Ironically, the Black Tiger Demon, which was following not far behind Zheng Qing, was ’luckily’ standing outside the trap because it was a couple of steps slow.
At the moment, the young wizard was upside down, his robe flipped over, and was awkwardly bound into a dumpling-like shape by several large tendrils, hanging on a eucalyptus tree - obviously, this kind of trap that lifts you up onto a tree as soon as you step on it couldn’t have been naturally formed.
Even though this was a magical world, the growth of natural things remained fundamentally principled.
A eucalyptus tree capable of setting its own traps was clearly beyond the fundamental principles.
Therefore, Zheng Qing easily deduced that there must be a group of hunters nearby-- especially the runes carved on the bark, intended to inhibit demons and suppress demon power, revealed even more.
The young wizard let out a sigh of despair, then took a deep breath and shouted, "Hello! Anyone there? You got the wrong guy! I’m a wizard too! We’re on the same side... we’re all on the same side!!!"
The voice passed through the treetops, startled a few birds grooming their feathers on the branches, and then spread out into the empty field. It gradually faded into silence, evaporated by the wind and space.
No one replied, and no hunter emerged from the bushes to release the struggling young wizard from the tendrils.
Zheng Qing strived feebly.
The swaying tendrils spun him around, turning his sight from facing the tree bark to having his back against it.
Then Zheng Qing saw the contemptuous look in the Black Tiger Demon’s eyes.
Yes, just as Zheng Qing could understand Poseidon’s gaze, he could read from the eyes of this Black Tiger Demon a clear sense of mockery.
"What is that look for!" The young wizard struggled violently, his face flushed with anger, he yelled: "I was the one who stepped on this trap for you! You should show some gratitude!! Get me down now!"
It was not the humiliation that rendered his face red--although there was a tiny bit of it--but rather it was mainly the inverted posture that made his blood circulation difficult, leaving his face blushing.
The Black Tiger Demon, having narrowed its eyes, glanced at the raging wizard swinging on the tree, swiveled around, settled in the soft grass beneath the tree, took out the Monkey Demon’s head again, and resumed playing with it.
...
...
When Zheng Qing was hanging upside down on a Eucalyptus swing, not far away in the bushes, within a concealment rune array, a heated debate was happening among several hunters from the Karen Hunting Team.
"Don’t stand in my way! Let me go!!" Elena was grasping a light-blue tarot card in one hand, glaring at the young wizard from the O’Brien family in front of her with a hostile look, her tone somewhat angry: "Obviously, it’s Zheng Qing! Not some wild demon! Why won’t you let him go!"
"Calm down, calm down... don’t get worked up," Adam Carlyle O’Brien stood in front of the gypsy witch, helplessly looking at her, he glanced at Matthew Karen who was standing not far from them, watching the ’prey’ with his back to them, and whispered, "You know why... it’s an order."
"What garbage order!" The gypsy witch’s words began to become violent: "Since when can we turn a blind eye to the lives of our friends?! He’s alone, and there’s a tiger demon besides him! He’s in great danger now!"
"Danger?" Matthew finally took his gaze away from outside the rune array and turned to look at his own hunter and shook his head repeatedly, "He’s not in danger... we are."
"We?" Nankai seemed not very good at making complex logical inferences, and couldn’t help but counter, "But the person who’s hanging from the tree with a tiger demon beside him is Zheng Qing... I can’t see how we hiding in the rune array are in any danger compared to him."
"First, who can guarantee that the person outside is the real Zheng Qing... and not a ghost or demon adept at shapeshifting?"
"I can vouch for that." Elena flipped her long hair, looking firmly at Matthew, "I’m a classmate of Zheng Qing, we often study together... I can guarantee that outside is a genuine person."
"Alright, alright," The young vampire from the Karen family raised his hand resignedly, "I’m also in the same class as him, indeed I didn’t notice anything abnormal... let’s bypass this point for now."
"Then the second point, why didn’t the demon eat Zheng Qing? Everyone knows that the desire of demons for the flesh and blood of wizards is insatiable, and no demon can suppress its instinctive urge to give up a delicious treat within reach."
This question was extremely sharp, and it broke the silence that the Karen Hunting Team had maintained for a few minutes—although everyone realized that the relationship between Zheng Qing and the tiger demon was very strange, no one dared to say it directly because it implied a very serious accusation.
"He’s not a demon! He hasn’t transformed either! Gypsy witches have very keen senses in this aspect, I can guarantee this!" Elena furrowed her eyebrows, gazing sternly at Matthew, her tone bearing a hint of warning, "This is the hunting ground, do not disturb everyone with unconfirmed rumors!"
"Because this is the hunting ground, I have to ensure the safety of everyone present." Matthew calmly looked at Elena, his tone resolute, "Even if you can guarantee that Zheng Qing hasn’t been infected, hasn’t transformed... but can you guarantee he hasn’t made any strange agreements with the demon? Remember, the puppet had warned all of us earlier, only one hunting team can survive this hunting ground!"
Matthew’s words immediately reminded everyone of that terrible memory.
What happened in the small chapel not long ago came back to mind: Big Mouth Gulu brutally devoured two wizards, the eccentric Secret Garden Elf uttered a terrifying curse - no one wanted to be devoured by that carnivorous plant, and no one wanted the curse of the Secret Garden Elf to come true.
The captain of the Karen Hunting Team didn’t stop his doubting, instead, he continued, "No one knows what terrible things the other hunting teams have done, and no one knows what choices some people will make. That’s why I asked you all to be vigilant of everyone."
"Moreover, if he is Zheng Qing, where are the others from the Absolution Hunting Team!!"
"If I remember correctly, he should be the captain of the Absolution Hunting Team."
The accusation began to sound more serious, but unquestionably, each of his questions was very sharp, hitting the nail on the head. And these were questions that Elena couldn’t answer.
The rune array suddenly became quiet.
