Chapter 157: Chapter 81: Awaken_1
Doctor Du Zemu stood in the sunlight, eyes closed, a look of ecstasy on his face, his arms moving slightly as if conducting an orchestra.
With his rhythm, the nearly transparent light mist in the bowl whirled and flowed in the air.
The Spirit Turtle stared with its beady eyes, stretching its neck, sadly watching the mist fall into the box nearby, its mouth twitching.
Zheng Qing held his breath, watching the mist, afraid that a slight breath would blow away these precious things.
After all, this wisp of mist costs twelve gold beans!
He could only use a bit of his scholarship money to cover the costs for now.
Having paid this money, nearly all of his spare time next week would have to be used to draw talismans, to make up for the deficit.
It was not until the mist quietly disappeared into the noses of the sprites that he heaved a great sigh of relief.
"Don’t worry, give it a moment." Sensing his tense mood, the Doctor patted his shoulder, reassuring, "They have been in a deep sleep for over a week. Their bodily functions need some time to adapt."
Zheng Qing’s lips trembled, he said nothing, only nodded forcefully.
The room was unusually quiet.
Zheng Qing and Jiang Yu huddled together at the small opening of the cardboard box, staring motionlessly at the Green Sprites who had taken the medicine, their gazes full of anticipation. This emotion even infected the Spirit Turtle, which stretched its neck curiously to look at the little green creatures.
"What I need to remind you is that the effect of this potion is very limited." Doctor Du Zemu sat behind the desk, cleared his throat, and gently reminded, "If you remember, I had told you this before the concoction."
Zheng Qing snapped back to reality and quickly nodded.
The Doctor had indeed clarified the issue of the sporadic effect of the potion beforehand.
While the potion was high quality and affordable, its drawback was strong drug resistance, and it would lose effectiveness after about three or four doses; moreover, the duration of this potion was very short. According to the doctor’s estimate, one dose can only keep the sprites awake for about a week.
However, when the Doctor brought up his previous statement, Zheng Qing suddenly remembered another issue.
"This is your fee for the medicine, I really appreciate your help." Zheng Qing took out twelve gold beans from his grey cloth bag, handed them to the doctor, grateful, "The professors at the school had previously said they were beyond help, I was really hopeless then... I’m so grateful."
"It’s my pleasure, it’s my pleasure." Doctor Du Zemu accepted the gold beans, put them into his pocket all at once, his face lit up with a brilliant smile, "Those are Miss Jiang’s friends, it’s my duty to help them...As for the professors of the school, I guess they are too rigid in their thinking. They were only focusing on those drugs specifically for the Green Sprites and failed to think outside the box..."
"She’s awake!" Jiang Yu, who’d been intently watching the box, suddenly popped up, interrupting the Doctor, shouting cheerfully, "The elves are awake! Look, look! They woke up!"
Zheng Qing was startled, and almost instantly pounced over, nearly knocking over a row of heavy reference books on the table.
The Doctor reached out and stabilized the books, showing no signs of blaming him, instead showing a hint of amusement in his eyes.
"Ah, to be young." He mumbled, then patted the back of the Spirit Turtle.
The turtle slowly nodded its head.
In the box.
A sprite slowly opened her eyes.
The thin eyelids blinked, and the black pupils gradually shown some signs of vitality.
"Hehe..."
She opened her mouth, and weakly gave the world a greeting.
"Yeah!" Zheng Qing excitedly waved his hand, squeezing Jiang Yu’s tightly.
Jiang Yu’s face turned a little red. She instinctively retracted her hand.
Zheng Qing was shocked, but his face did not change, he continued to speak with excitement: "She is really awake!"
"They look a little weak," Jiang Yu writhed her hands, looking at the sprites waking up one after another, and asked Doctor Duzem worriedly, "Do we need to prepare some special supplements?"
"Ever seen a Green Sprite eat?" The Doctor counter-questioned. Without waiting for her to answer, he answered his own question, "Green Sprites are a type of very sophisticated Alchemy Product. While they need potions to maintain their lives, they do not need to consume food for energy."
"When witches created these little guys, in order to reduce the complexity of the body--after all, the more complex, the more likely to make mistakes--they did not create a complete digestive system for the sprites," the Doctor got up and walked to the box. He looked at the little sprites beginning to flutter their wings and move their limbs, and said in a somewhat emotion-charged tone, "The energy circulation system of Green Sprites uses the principle of photosynthesis in plants, as long as there is light, they can recover their energy."
"What an ingenious design." He added, emphasising once again.
"Light?" Zheng Qing looked surprisingly at the sprites in the box, a faint green glow beginning to emerge from their bodies.
"God said, ’Let there be light’." The Doctor’s face showed a puzzled expression, his right hand lightly swept over the box.
A brilliant sunlight curved in from the window and poured into the box.
After a moment, the voices of the sprites became more energetic.
"Hehe...Hehe!"
"Come see me for a follow-up next Saturday." Before he left, Doctor Duzem reminded Zheng Qing over and over again, "If they show signs of discomfort during this week, you need to let me know as soon as possible."
"Thank you!" Zheng Qing bowed deeply to the Doctor.
His sprites fluttered their wings, revolving around him, curiously looking at the unfamiliar surroundings.
"You have been a great help." Jiang Yu slightly bowed to the Doctor.
"Not at all, not at all." Doctor Du Zemu hurriedly helped the two up, "If you could often come visit this old-fashioned alchemist, it’ll be perfect."
"Certainly." Zheng Qing nodded energetically, the smile in his face just wouldn’t stop, "I know a young Alchemist; everyone says he has a strong talent. Next week I’ll bring him over to learn from you."
The doctor nodded, and escorted the two young wizards out the door, watching them leave the winding quiet alleyway.
"Young Master." The old servant, Constantin, stood quietly behind him.
"Get the food ready quickly!" Doctor Du Zemu turned around swiftly, holding his stomach, and made a mournful cry, "Your young master is starving to death!"
"It has already been prepared." The old servant smiled kindly and responded respectfully, "It is all on your desk."
"Good job!" The Doctor swiftly ran into the room and suddenly stopped. He reached into his pocket and threw a string of gold beads to Constantin, "Make a killing today! This is this month’s food money, keep it."
The old servant caught the gold beans, squinted his eyes, and rubbed them in his palm. His smiling face was visibly creased.
"Yes, Young Master."
He agreed as he turned around to close the heavy iron door securely.
