Chapter 91: Chief (2)
"Ke, ke..."
It took a while for me to catch my breath after almost choking like that, but when I did...
"Are you serious?"
It wasn’t Vanessa that answered me.
Rather, it was Reddick that came over to say, "That’s right. This was something that was discussed between the owners of the stores here and they want you to become the chief."
Then as if he had something to complain about, he muttered, "Of course, I feel that there are better choices than someone like you, but this was what the others..."
Before he could finish, he suddenly choked on his words because...
"Dad, that’s enough out of you. Get out of here, I’m talking to him."
A bitter smile appeared on Reddick’s face as he looked at Vanessa, but she still had one hand raised and looked like she was about to slap him on the back again if he said anything.
When he saw her like this, he really had no choice but to listen to her and move to the side. But he still remained close enough that he was able to hear everything that was being discussed by us.
After watching the two of them like this, I was able to calm myself a bit.
But I still had to admit that I was quite shaken by their suggestion.
After all, it was a big thing to become the chief of a town in the wilderness.
In a place like this, becoming a chief was like becoming a noble.
This was a place where the law of the jungle was followed by everyone that lived here.
That meant that as long as one was strong enough, they would be able to carve out a place for themselves and becoming a chief meant establishing a stronghold.
It was better to say that this was like becoming a warlord in the Warring States Period.
But it wasn’t as if I was completely against this.
The main reason that I was surprised was because I thought that it was too early for me to become the chief of a town.
I knew that to achieve my goal of becoming the Barbarian King, I would have to take down all of the cities and towns that were in the wilderness. Through power, I would have to bring them under me.
So that did include this town.
The problem was that I didn’t think that I had enough power right now to claim this town for myself...
"What are you worried about? Everyone trusts you and you’ve shown that you’re someone to be trusted." Vanessa suddenly said when she saw the look that was on my face.
I couldn’t help revealing a trace of bitterness on my face in response to this without actually saying anything.
"I’ll work hard to make sure that this town remains safe." Mia suddenly said with a determined look in her eyes that caught me off guard.
After what had happened to her and how her personality had changed, I didn’t think that she would have this side to her.
But Vanessa’s words made it clear what she was thinking.
"It seems like we mean quite a lot to you." Vanessa said with a teasing smile on her face.
Mia gave a snort and turned her head away, but the key thing was that she didn’t deny this.
It seemed that after losing her home, she had come to see this place as her new home after all that time that she spent here. If she saw this as her new home, it was only natural that she would want to defend it.
Even Leaf seemed like she was trying to show off how strong she was, but she came off as cute rather than fierce.
Still, seeing them like this made me think that I was being too hesitant.
It was something that I had been planning to do anyway and now that this chance had presented itself, it seemed like it was the perfect chance to achieve what I wanted to achieve.
So there was no need to actually hesitate now that I was at the finish line.
It was just that this town really wasn’t that easy to defend...
"If you need more people, then there are people that are volunteering from the town." Vanessa said as if she knew what I was worried about.
Mia also said with a nod, "Some of the girls that you rescued before have asked me about receiving training from you as well. They don’t want to ever feel as helpless as they did in the past."
I looked at the two of them with a strange look, but they did indeed hit the nail on the head.
After all, it wasn’t as if I would be able to remain in the town forever.
Even if I was the chief for now, it wasn’t as if I would stay forever since my goal was to become the Barbarian King. As such, it was only a matter of time before I actually went to other cities and towns in this wilderness.
Though this was the solution to my problem, it wasn’t actually the best solution.
After all, there was no telling what kind of talent these people had and if they would even remain loyal. In this wilderness, it was hard to actually gain loyalty from people that followed you.
This was something that I had seen quite often in this place.
Still, I gave in when I saw the way that they were looking at me.
"If it works out, then it’ll be beneficial to me. If it fails, then there’s no skin off my back since I can just leave whenever I want. That’s the good thing about the wilderness, there’s no reason to stay if you don’t want to."
Once that thought passed through my mind, I said with a nod, "Alright, give me a list of the people that want to join and give me a list of the people that want me to be chief. I’ll look through it and come to a decision on what I want to do next."
"Alright." Both Vanessa and Mia said with firm nods.
For the first time, they actually didn’t fight with each other.
For the first time, they were working together.
