Chapter 870: 853. Chestnut Braised Chicken with Rice Cake (Can Skip)_2
The rice cakes were toasted to a golden brown crisp, the front end slightly covered with brown chicken broth. The strong aroma of chestnuts was so dominating, as soon as the dish was served, everyone instinctively reached for it with their chopsticks!
Aunt Lianhua came over with a steamer and couldn’t help but laugh, "Don’t eat too much, there are sweet potatoes too, watch out for farting under the blankets at night."
Zhang Yanping, who had been farting all afternoon, was fearless: "I’m not sharing a blanket with anyone else, I can stink up my own space!"
He spoke nonchalantly, but regretted it as soon as he started eating: "I really shouldn’t have eaten so many sweet potatoes this afternoon!"
"You’re such a dummy."
Wu Lan critiqued him: "You were gobbling down two or three right there in the field. Get busy with something else when you get back; you even took away the half that Xin Jun was eating."
"That big one, if we put it in our pot to steam, we’d have to cut it into three or four pieces. You on the other hand, just kept eating until you were stuffed."
Zhang Yanping thought to himself that he really didn’t understand why he wasn’t full that afternoon! Just... unconsciously, if it’s right by his hand, he starts eating.
Now he was holding a rice cake in one hand and grabbing a chestnut with his chopsticks, feeling full before any of it even reached his stomach.
Looking over at Xin Jun and Wu Lei, the two of them, one dark-skinned and one light-skinned, one holding a sweet potato and the other a rice cake, eating with such gusto you’d think the fragrance was spraying out of them!
Everyone was extremely satisfied with the meal today. Master Jiang patted his belly, his whole heart and eyes fixated on waiting for the dormitory to be completed, so he could bring his wife over.
Even if his wife came and it wouldn’t be convenient for her to come home for work meals, the food in the canteen was still great! Especially since the area was known for its beautiful mountains and clear waters, the sleep here was particularly sweet; it’s definitely nourishing!
Her nervous breakdown and insomnia at night, perhaps she would get better with some rest here.
Only Seventh Uncle felt it wasn’t enough even after eating three rice cakes and savoring a soft, sweet steamed sweet potato:
"Everything’s great, it’s just that the chicken is so-so."
Even though they got local free-range chicken delivered from nearby houses in the town, how could that compare to the birds on the mountain behind?
Ah, as a chef, he was anxious he hadn’t even tasted a piece of meat from home to this day!
When everyone took advantage of the night to tidy up the house and prepare to rest, Song Youde also returned to his room.
Song Tan’s Home had reserved a room on the first floor early on for them, tiny and yet fully equipped. Now they took off their thick coats upon entering the room, Song Youde rummaged in the corner and finally pulled out a cloth bag:
"Let’s take this out to sun tomorrow... Huh?"
He weighed the bag in his hands, frowning: "Was it this dry when we sunned it last time? Feels like it isn’t even two pounds now."
...
Upstairs, Qiaoqiao got back to his room and took a wad of tissues from his pocket, unfolded them, and two cooked golden-yellow chestnuts appeared in his palm!
"Datian! Datian!"
He called out: "Come eat the chestnuts!"
Datian from the corner, now golden-furred and plump as a plush stress-relief ball, could be squeezed and squished at will.
Upon hearing the call, the slow-moving Datian squeezed out of the shoebox, then draped its soft body over the edge with its front paws dangling lifelessly.
This sight made Qiaoqiao’s heart ache!
"Datian, are you sick?"
He touched Datian’s increasingly glossy fur, full of worry now: "You haven’t been eating properly for several days..."
There were still yellow beans and rice grains in the clothes lining the shoebox.
Qiaoqiao’s concern was not unfounded as Datian’s appetite had been on the decline for some time, becoming less and less active. As the autumn sunlight streamed through the gauze window, it would collapse there, basking and sleeping soundly, showing no sign of waking up!
At first, Qiaoqiao thought it was because the mountain squirrels no longer dared to attack it, giving it a sense of security to sleep excessively.
Moreover, feeling tired in spring and fall was common, and he himself had been feeling sleepy lately too. Datian didn’t have any jobs, so sleeping a bit more was normal.
But now...
Qiaoqiao wasn’t sure anymore.
He remembered Teacher Xin Jun said: When living in society, you need to find something you’re interested in.
Otherwise, as you idle away day by day, you will eventually be buried by the trivialities of life, even depleting your own spirit in the process.
Could it be that Datian... was depressed because it had been unemployed for so long?!
Panicked, Qiaoqiao grabbed it all of a sudden, and after tugging on its paws and legs, looking back and forth — it was plump and furry, its limbs kicked with quite some strength...
This didn’t seem like depression!
But why then did it suddenly stop eating?! It wasn’t on the verge of dying, was it?!
