Chapter 840: 830. Own Brothers

"Erbao and Zhou Dayong had just met, but they hit it off right away:

"You’re not from around here, are you?"

"No, I’m not. I used to work with a foreman, everyone called him ’Boss.’ He was a decent guy. He said he needed more people this time, asked us if we were willing to come make money for a couple of months, so I came."

He chuckled heartily, his face full of anticipation:

"Working like this for two months, I can go home when it gets cold, it doesn’t delay the New Year, and I can make a good sum of money..."

The road worker was stunned for a moment: "But isn’t this the road leading to the village?"

He glanced at the only road: "Building houses for the village, and they still need to recruit people from outside?"

"You say that..." the man prone to car sickness wasn’t pleased:

"Aren’t you also from outside? Everyone has gone out to work, how many locals are there?"

That was true, and the road worker across couldn’t say anything back.

"I heard that it’s a boss, he has a factory and a company in the village. His factory was already built, I missed that. This time it’s about building dormitories, several buildings, I missed the earlier phase."

"Now there’s new work, not enough people, it’s to rebuild houses for the family, while also working on the dormitories, should take about two months to wrap up."

"Then you’re going from one village to another... also quite the hassle..." he muttered.

But building houses didn’t matter to him: "Anyway, the pay is pretty good, and the boss doesn’t delay payments, sometimes he even advances money even if he hasn’t received it himself."

"With the usual work I do, I can make two to three hundred a day. The foreman said this time the food is especially good, the living conditions are comfortable, 260 a day. My son is getting married next year, I work here so I won’t have to face a frugal New Year, not embarrassing my kid."

Hearing this, the other person was tempted.

These days, a boss who doesn’t delay payments is like an angel, right? Which construction worker wouldn’t envy that!

"Come on, brother, the roadwork I’m doing is actually outsourced by a construction company, I can do any sort of work, major or minor."

"Let’s add each other as friends, tell me if there’s any work later."

The two compared their phones, and suddenly laughed:

"You’re Zhou Dayong? I’m Zhou Erbao, ’Erbao’ as in the second child in my family, we’re actually related!"

Last names are a magical thing, men chatting outside, sharing the same last name seemed to bring them closer.

Just in these few short exchanges, they were already talking about everything as if they were brothers, until the van over there started calling people, only then did they wave goodbye.

...

Zhou Dayong’s motion sickness had waned, and he was back to his energetic self.

He leaned on the front seat back, even asking the driver:

"Is it far, can we make it by noon?"

"Not far." The driver was local: "Just that the road is rough, this stretch we have to drive for 40 minutes, it’s quite bumpy."

Then he reassured them: "The boss said as long as we arrive before noon, you guys can still catch lunch. We have time, anyone feeling nauseous should say so in advance, I’ll stop and we can rest!"

"No rush, just don’t vomit in my car. You see, in the village, I have to wash my own car, it’s such a hassle!"

With that said, everyone in the van agreed, they’d rather not vomit in the van either!

As soon as he finished talking, a harsh bump came up ahead."

Zhou Dayong, caught off guard, felt his empty stomach churn once again. By the time he got off the vehicle, he felt like he had lost half his life—after all these years of working, why couldn’t he get rid of his motion sickness?

However, everyone was stunned as they turned around.

Before their eyes was a continuous range of mountains, with a gentle breeze making it especially refreshing. Below the mountains, there was a large pond reflecting the white clouds above, surrounded by a scattered group of fishermen.

A group of ducks marched grandly from one end of the pond to the other, led by two robust geese with heads held high, who occasionally dived fiercely into the water, appearing quite aggressive.

Next to them was a field of lush green vegetables, and directly ahead was a quite large, brand-new and bright factory.

Taking a deeper breath, the air was filled with a faint but delicious aroma from the kitchen—

It smelled so good! That’s the smell of meat! They must be cooking meat for lunch, and quite a lot of it!

Everyone got instantly excited: No wonder the foreman said the food here was good! It smells delicious!

In the next moment, the familiar foreman, Old Xu, came over, greeting everyone and leading them to the dormitory building.

"See that? This here is our dorm, and that over there is the women’s dorm. We’re not allowed in there, whether there’s anyone inside or not, it’s locked and under surveillance."

"Our dorm is over here, with bunk beds, 4 people per room, and the bathroom and shower are inside."

Old Xu always praised his workers, now showing them the benefits, but he also had some harsh words to say first:

"This is the new building our construction team built this year. Everything inside is brand new, even the beds are freshly made, and the walls are snow-white."

The air conditioning is also brand new, even though it’s not needed now, but it’s better to mention it in advance.

"When you stay here, keep hygiene in mind, don’t destroy others’ property. Don’t spit or blow your nose anywhere on the floor, and tidy up your smelly shoes and worn-out socks before you leave..."

It’s hard to expect much cleanliness from rough men who do physical labor and are covered in dirt every day.

So Old Xu went on and on, fearing that any damage couldn’t be restored.

"I’ll tell you the truth, they pay well here and don’t nitpick. We’ve done several jobs, and not once have there been any arrears."

"And the boss said that there might be more work next year, but that will depend on our performance."

"If you guys ruin my reputation, you tell me whether I should continue the business or recruit someone else!"

With that said, the room fell silent.

But these were all seasoned workers, and Old Xu quickly reassured them:

"Don’t think that I am being harsh, just look at the accommodation. When have we ever had such conditions while working?"

"The cafeteria here is great, you can eat whatever you want; there’s always both meat and vegetables available every day. Not just slices of fatty meat in the dishes but braised meat and big ribs that appear from time to time."

"Be polite to the chef as well, the head chef used to cook for state banquets, he’s just here to recuperate, that’s why he’s working as a chef here."

Anyway, he’s eaten himself round-bellied, having stayed here for almost half a year, and even running back and forth to the construction site, he’s still managed to gain twenty kilos, now looking quite robust and not unlike a rich and callous figure.

So, when he spoke about the meals, it was genuinely heartfelt:

"This kind of meal, we’ve never had anywhere else before, everyone better perform well! At the end, the dorms will be inspected, and if they’re left dirty, I’ll deduct it from your wages, evenly split across the dorm!"

Upon hearing this, people started murmuring:

"Isn’t the house just for living? Why so many rules?"

"Exactly, we’ve never talked about this before. In the big common dorm, who manages whom?"
