Chapter 1214: Chapter 1180: Seventh Uncle’s Son Has Returned!
Seventh Uncle was carrying a big bag of soft, white steamed bread when he and Seventh Grandma slowly made their way back to their own home under the dim streetlights.
In contrast to the lively atmosphere at Song Tan’s Home, his decades-old house felt a chill as soon as you stepped into the yard.
The dark yard was empty, and even the lights under the corridor were still those old tungsten bulbs.
The old couple fell into silence.
When Seventh Uncle reached the kitchen and pulled the light cord, the dim glow illuminated the small kitchen. He was taken aback for a moment, then remembered that the steamed buns should go in the fridge.
And the fridge was in the living room.
Seventh Grandma sighed, "This house has been here for decades; it’s about time it was torn down."
"Yeah," Seventh Uncle replied wistfully, "but thinking about building a house at our age feels quite unsettling."
"What’s so unsettling about it?" Seventh Grandma muttered, "In the urban area, you thought there was no place to farm. You came back and didn’t start farming either. This big house, just the two of us living in it, it doesn’t even feel warm when we come back at night."
If we build a new, smaller house, just for the two of us, it wouldn’t feel so empty and would hold warmth better. We could even have a stove in the winter, and just throw a handful of dry wood in there, and it’d be warm again.
Unlike now, where the yard is pitch black, and the house is also pitch black. As we age, we sleep lightly and use the bathroom often, so the old wooden door creaks and squeaks.
Seventh Uncle thought about it and got excited, saying to Seventh Grandma, "Did you see the picture I sent you last night? I found it on Douyin; older people’s houses with seats and grab bars in the showers! We should get some too, I saw in Xiaozhao’s design plans...
Seventh Grandma grumbled, "Those older people have their children building and decorating for them. But not us..."
Seventh Uncle looked at her, "Why mention him? Our son is like a guest, is there any real connection?"
"When the day comes that we can’t walk anymore, will it be us going all the way to the Borderlands, or him returning to look after us? Even my Qiaoqiao seems more dependable."
The two of them put the steamed buns in the freezer, boiled a pot of water using the electric kettle they bought after returning home, and then soaked their feet before lying down.
It was time to sleep; the son was coming back tomorrow, he had to show his son who is really the father!
Thinking about what was brought today besides the buns and those big and small bags, Seventh Uncle fell into a deep, satisfied sleep.
In the meantime?
In a hotel in Yun City, Aiguli looked at her two sleeping daughters while complaining to her husband:
"We should have gone to see Dad first. It’s been so many years, Qiaole Pang and Afu have never seen him, and neither have I..."
Song Shuliang, having spent all day playing with his daughters, was exhausted. He lay down, waved his hand nonchalantly, and said:
"Don’t we make WeChat calls during the holidays? There’s no difference between seeing him in a video and in person, and I sent several red envelopes..."
He noticed his wife was still uncertain, so he sat up, "You don’t know! The roads in our countryside are especially difficult, unlike the flat terrain in our Borderlands."
"I’m also worried that once we’re back home, it’ll be a hassle to drive back to the urban area. Anyway, my dad’s not in a hurry, we’ve been having fun these past few days, and tomorrow is just right to head back for Xiao Nian..."
After saying that, he lay back down, looking at the ceiling and sighed:
"The urban area has developed so fast, it feels completely different from when I left. If it weren’t for guides, I wouldn’t even know where to take the kids to play..."
His wife thought for a moment, then regretted:
"The grilled lamb skewers don’t taste good. We should have brought two more sheep for Dad."
"It’s difficult to bring them." Song Shuliang was already sleepy and muttered, "There are so many people during the Spring Festival, how could we bring them? Let’s courier it back when we return."
Aiguli glanced at him, recalling he said the same thing last time, later said couriering was too expensive, and then mentioned that the ice pack might melt...
However, her husband said so, and after all these years, he has devoted himself to his family. Aiguli thought about it and found it hard to say more, so she simply tidied up and lay down too.
The next morning, bright and early, Song Shuliang asked the front desk and managed to hire a taxi.
The taxi driver was quite chatty, looking at the three high-nosed, big-eyed Borderlands girls in the back and then at Song Shuliang beside him:
"So, buddy, what are you heading to Yunqiao Village for? Is it your old home?"
"Yes." Song Shuliang nodded, "My dad moved back to the village, I’m bringing the kids to visit for the New Year."
"Oh, that’s great! I know Yunqiao Village; they just got a new asphalt road laid this year, so the ride is smooth. I heard the municipal government plans to upgrade the electrical lines there too... Wow, I wonder what kind of good fortune they’ve been having..."
Song Shuliang listened, feeling puzzled and only half-understood.
After all, when he left, the mountain roads were still muddy and winding. Now he thought there might be cement roads, but they even had asphalt roads?
He said nothing, listened to the driver’s anecdotes, and when they reached the village, he was dumbfounded.
Because the village had changed quite a bit, and he couldn’t quite remember which way was home...
The driver looked at him with a strange gaze.
Finally, Seventh Uncle had Song Tan help send a location, and as he got out of the car, the driver was still sighing:
"Buddy, how long have you been away to forget your roots?"
Other than feeling awkward, Song Shuliang had nothing else to say.
And at this moment, because of his return, the kitchen that hadn’t been used at Seventh Uncle’s for over a decade once again filled with swirling cooking smoke.
"You’re back?" Seventh Grandma finally saw her son.
But surprisingly, she didn’t feel very excited. She originally feared she’d start crying like a fool, but seeing this unfamiliar and weathered man, she felt numb.
All she could awkwardly muster were those three words.
Song Shuliang didn’t notice, he just tossed his bag on the ground: "Dad! Mom! I’m back—where’s Dad?"
Seventh Uncle came out of the kitchen, holding a bowl:
"Oh, look who’s here! It’s been years since you set foot here!"
Song Shuliang laughed.
"Dad, come on! It’s inconvenient with the family in tow. You could have visited us, too; the scenery is great over there."
Seventh Uncle mentally rolled his eyes, thinking about that "over there" talk.
But seeing his daughter-in-law with the two granddaughters standing there not daring to speak, he thought of the times they called him Grandpa on video. He sighed and handed them both bowls:
"This must be Qi Ming and Siyue. Wow, you look better in person... Come, come, come, I hear you have a lot of cattle and sheep there, always drinking milk. This is from Qiaoqiao, who went to the paddock to get it first thing this morning..."
