Chapter 122: Side Story: Gavrius And Vaelrik’s Switching Role (Part 4)

"Proceed carefully. If you apply too much force, you’ll destroy what you’re trying to work with. If you’re too weak, you won’t achieve the desired effect. If you can’t properly adjust your magic, then don’t proceed at all."

Vaelrik took the sphere, staring at it intently.

From that day on, he practiced daily.

But finesse had never been his strong suit.

Every time he grew impatient, the gelatin would shatter.

Yet, when he hesitated, it wouldn’t even let him in.

"This is Gavi. This is Gavi," he told himself.

Yes.

This was Gavi’s body.

He could not hurt Gavi.

He pressed forward.

Squelch—!

"...It won’t go in."

POP!

"Ugh! Again?!"

Vaelrik groaned, burying his face in his hands.

This was the kind of thing that Kaelion or his younger sister, Nyx, excelled at.

Not him.

Not once had he succeeded.

"What am I supposed to do...?"

Maybe he needed to take things slowly.

Would Gavi wait for him?

He didn’t want to cause any pain.

But he did want to grant his request.

And, above all else, it had made him happy to hear Gavi ask for it.

Just as he was drowning in frustration, a familiar voice called out.

"Vael?"

He tensed.

Turning around, he found himself staring into soft golden eyes, wide with surprise before curving into a warm, delighted smile.

"G-Gavi?! Why are you here?!"

"We haven’t seen each other much lately," Gavi said with a small tilt of his head. "So I thought I’d drop by. Even if it’s late."

Vaelrik’s face turned scarlet as he hastily hid the practice slime.

But Gavi had already seen it.

He leaned closer, peering at the object curiously. "What’s that?"

"Ah—uh, well...!"

At this point, Vaelrik knew he had no chance of hiding it.

So, after a moment’s hesitation, he confessed everything.

...Well, almost everything.

Of course, he left out the part about being forced to have a mold taken of his body.

That was a secret he’d never be able to share.

"So there’s a technique like that, huh?" Gavi murmured, reaching out to touch the jelly-like slime.

His fingers sank effortlessly into it.

"Wow, it’s soft... and a little cool."

He giggled, then, as if it were the easiest thing in the world, he began to trace slow, circular motions inside the slime.

Just like that, the gelatin formed a smooth, round opening.

Vaelrik’s jaw dropped.

"W-What?! How?!"

"Hm?" Gavi blinked. "It’s not that hard."

"I’ve been practicing for days and still can’t do it!"

Then what had all his struggle been for?!

Seeing his dismay, Gavi chuckled and patted his shoulder.

That was it.

He had enough.

People had their strengths and weaknesses.

No point competing in something he simply wasn’t good at.

It was just exhausting.

Gavi suddenly tilted his head again.

"Do you think... you could use this technique on yourself?"

"What?"

But before Vaelrik could even process the question, Gavi shook his head, his face going oddly red.

Then, without another word, he wrapped his arms around Vaelrik, burying himself against him.

"Can I sleep with you tonight? Not for anything else. Just sleeping."

"Ah... yeah. Of course."

Vaelrik gently pressed a kiss to Gavi’s forehead before pulling him down onto the bed.

Holding Gavi close, feeling his warmth, he realized—this, right now, was his greatest happiness.

...

It had been a few days since Vaelrik’s relentless efforts bore no fruit, and his older brother bluntly told him, "You have no talent."

Today, he was heading to Gavi’s home—the Golden Dragon’s royal castle—for the first time in a while.

"Vaelrik, it’s been a while."

"Lord Gabriel, it has been a long time."

Gabriel, the King of the Golden Dragons and a close friend of Vaelrik’s father, had always been a kind person who would play with him.

He had always liked children, and perhaps because Vaelrik was close with Gavi, he had spent a lot of time with them.

Of course, now that Vaelrik was older, that was no longer the case.

"Gavi hasn’t been too demanding, has he?"

"Not at all."

"That’s good. He can be surprisingly stubborn and inflexible."

"Haha."

Vaelrik actually found that part of Gavi quite endearing, so it wasn’t a problem at all.

Gabriel’s expression turned slightly serious.

Then, he gently asked, "Are you truly willing to become Gavi’s partner?"

"Huh? Yes, that’s my intention. Is there... some kind of issue?"

Since this was a marriage between royalty, there were likely various formalities involved.

His father had also mentioned that if he was serious about marrying, he needed to announce it sooner, as preparations would take time.

Feeling slightly anxious, Vaelrik looked at Gabriel.

However, Gabriel simply shook his head quietly and gave a troubled yet amused smile.

"For me, this is more than I could have hoped for. I only wondered if you were truly content with this."

"For me, this is more than I could have hoped for, too."

"I see."

Gabriel smiled warmly, then, just like when Vaelrik was a child, reached out and gently ruffled his hair.

After that, Vaelrik headed toward Gavi’s room.

It was unusual for Gavi to be so quiet—he normally rushed to him the moment he arrived at the castle.

When Vaelrik opened the door, Gavi flinched sharply in surprise, staring at him.

"Ah, Vael... I’m sorry, I didn’t come to greet you."

"It’s fine, but... are you okay? Are you feeling unwell?"

"Huh? No, that’s not it."

Concerned by Gavi’s clearly flushed face, Vaelrik stepped closer and placed a hand on his forehead.

He didn’t seem to have a fever, but something felt off...

Gavi looked up at him from close range and swallowed his saliva.

Then, quite abruptly, he reached forward and pulled open the front of Vaelrik’s clothing.

"Eh?! H-Hey, Gavi?"

"Um... I can’t take it anymore. Vael, let’s do it."

"Ah... wait, but—"

"Do you not want to?"

Looking up at him with teary golden eyes, Gavi left Vaelrik with no chance of resisting.

Overwhelmed, he gave a hesitant nod, and immediately, Gavi’s face brightened like a blooming flower.
