Chapter 110: Side Story: Gabriel’s Predicament (Part 4)
Gabriel ran his fingers through Lysander’s golden hair, holding him as if trying to shield him from everything. His grip was firm but gentle, a silent promise that no one would take Lysander away from him, not now, not ever.
"I don’t need anyone else," Gabriel said firmly. His voice was steady, yet there was a hint of desperation beneath it. "And I don’t need any more children."
Lysander trembled against him. "But—"
"I said I don’t need them!" Gabriel’s arms tightened around him. "If they’re not yours, I won’t love them. That’s why... I don’t need anyone else."
Lysander continued crying against Gabriel’s chest, his frail body shaking with the force of his emotions. But this time, his arms hesitantly moved, fingers curling against the fabric of Gabriel’s shirt, clutching onto him as if afraid he might disappear.
This—this was all Gabriel had ever wanted.
The expressions Lysander showed him, raw and unguarded, were all he needed. His vulnerability, his love, his presence—Gabriel wanted to protect all of it.
"Will you stay by my side?" Gabriel whispered, his breath warm against Lysander’s ear.
Lysander hiccupped softly, his fingers tightening. "I... I don’t have anywhere else to go."
"Good."
"I want to stay with you, Gabriel."
His voice was small, uncertain. But Gabriel knew. He knew Lysander’s walls had finally crumbled.
Gabriel exhaled softly, his lips curving into a gentle smile before he leaned in and kissed him—a slow, lingering kiss, filled with all the love and devotion he wished to convey. He kissed Lysander as if to heal his wounded heart, to reassure him, to promise him happiness.
His fingers weaved through Lysander’s golden locks, his other hand resting against the small of his back, holding him close.
"I want to stay with you, too," Gabriel whispered between kisses. "Forever. Please... stay with me."
Lysander, his eyes still red from crying, nodded his head slowly.
It was a silent promise. A commitment spoken without words.

Not long after, a furious Shen Xinghui stormed into the castle, his presence like a raging storm tearing through the grand halls. His face was a mask of barely restrained fury, his usual serene composure utterly shattered.
Before saying a single word, he landed a solid punch on Morin’s head.
A loud *thud* echoed through the chamber.
"What the hell were you thinking, you idiot son?!" Shen Xinghui’s voice thundered, reverberating off the marble walls.
"Ah—Mother?!" Morin clutched his head, his expression torn between shock and indignation.
"If you love someone, why would you try to destroy their happiness?! That’s not love at all!"
It was a rare sight to see someone as gentle and graceful as Shen Xinghui—a man whose presence was usually as serene as a blooming flower—now consumed by unrestrained fury. The sheer intensity of his anger was shocking.
Gabriel and Lysander froze in place, stunned.
Then, Shen Xinghui turned toward them, his anger instantly melting into regret. He knelt on the ground and bowed his head deeply.
"I’m so sorry, Gabriel! Lysander! My idiot son has done something incredibly foolish!"
"Ah, no, it’s—" Gabriel started, startled by the display.
"Xinghui, that’s enough," Lysander interjected softly.
"I’m truly, truly sorry!"
As Shen Xinghui continued apologizing profusely, growing smaller with each word, Morin, who stood beside him, looked utterly dejected, his head hanging low.
"I never meant to come between you two or ruin anything," he muttered.
"Morin!" Shen Xinghui snapped.
"But I love him! Is that so wrong?" Morin’s voice cracked. "I can get along with both of you, Uncle Gabriel and Uncle Lysander! So why—"
"You still don’t understand!"
Shen Xinghui’s sharp reprimand made Morin shrink even further.
"Even if you don’t intend to, some things break just by inserting yourself into them."
"That’s not—!"
"Then tell me, Morin—if you were in my place, if Ignatius suddenly brought home a new, younger wife while you were still here, could you accept that?"
Morin froze. His eyes widened as the realization struck him. He bit his lower lip, trembling, before shaking his head.
Shen Xinghui reached out and gently ruffled his son’s hair. "As long as you understand."
At that moment, Ignatius entered, now that the situation had settled down. His usual composed expression was tinged with exasperation.
With a sigh, he turned to Gabriel and bowed his head slightly. "I’m sorry for all the trouble my foolish son has caused you."
"Ignatius," Gabriel acknowledged, nodding in greeting.
Ignatius offered a wry smile before continuing, "I’ll be taking Morin away from the Drakthar Dominion for a while. He’s too blinded by his feelings."
"You don’t have to go that far!" Gabriel protested. "This all started because my father schemed and led him astray! Sending him away is too extreme!"
"Perhaps," Ignatius said calmly. "But Morin willingly followed along. He failed to consider other people’s feelings, forced his own desires onto you, and ignored the warnings around him. That is his own failing."
Gabriel fell silent. Ignatius had already made up his mind.
It was unfortunate, but if he couldn’t accept Morin’s feelings, it would be cruel to give him false hope. Letting him stay would only prolong his suffering, and it would be a betrayal to Lysander as well.
"Next week, the Queen of the Republic of Mara is visiting. I plan to send Morin with him for a year-long study abroad."
"The Republic of Mara?" Gabriel frowned. That isolated nation, sitting at the heart of the world, was an enigma. "Why would you have ties with their queen?"
Gabriel’s curiosity must have been evident, as Ignatius easily provided the answer.
"The queen is like Shen Xinghui—someone from another world. We had the chance to meet him once when we were adventuring outside. He finds Shen Xinghui’s presence nostalgic and often comes to visit from time to time."
"That’s quite the connection."
Gabriel nodded, realizing how strangely intertwined fate could be. He had heard that the Republic of Mara had become more open in recent years. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity for Morin to move forward and find his own happiness.
"I’ll come to formally apologize another day," Ignatius said. "Will you forgive him?"
"Of course."
Thanks to all this, Gabriel had finally heard Lysander’s true feelings.
As for Morin, who was still sniffling like a heartbroken child, Gabriel didn’t say anything further. Instead, he simply watched in silence, wishing that someday, the boy would find his own happiness.
