Chapter 106: Side Story: Qi Yu and Two Sovereign (Part 4)

"If that’s the case... if the tree continues to weaken, then eventually even the species that are fine now will—"

Qi Yu smiled faintly. "You’re a perceptive one."

Shen Xinghui could hear the clear affirmation in Qi Yu’s words.

A chill ran down his spine.

This world was quietly heading toward its ruin, and no one seemed to realize it.

Qi Yu placed a hand on his head gently and stroking it with a worried expression.

"I have a special skill that allows me to bear children," Shen Xinghui said. "But even among my acquaintances, there are many people who have had children without such a skill. Why is that?"

"They must have wished for a child with an incredibly strong love," Qi Yu replied.

"Huh?"

"I’ve heard that what protects the core of life is the deep love shared between both parents. The deeper the love, the richer the color of the core. That love nurtures the core and enables it to withstand the immense magical energy involved in the union of highly magical beings."

Now that Shen Xinghui thought about it, he had heard the same thing during gatherings with other parents.

When the birth pill used for conception was darker in color, the chances of success were higher.

He had experienced it himself but had never known the reason behind it.

"Even so, the success rate is still declining. If the root cause is not resolved, this world will continue to close in on itself," Qi Yu continued. "The only thing Malrik could do was extend the lifespan of such species and synchronize their lifespans with their partners, preserving at least some possibility for the future."

"Oh..."

So that was why he could live a long life with Ignatius.

It was thanks to the Demon King.

If Malrik hadn’t blessed him, he would have had to die first long before Ignatius and his children.

"Xinghui?"

Realizing he was crying, Shen Xinghui gripped Qi Yu’s hand tightly and repeatedly whispered, "Thank you."

Qi Yu seemed to understand his emotions and hesimply patted his back gently.

"It may take some time," Qi Yu admitted. "And I can’t say for certain whether I’ll succeed in mediating their conflict. But one day, I want to see a world where even those people who are facing extinction can have children again. I believe that is the reason I was brought to this world."

"Why would you go so far?" Shen Xinghui asked.

Qi Yu’s lips curled into a gentle smile, his gaze distant, as if remembering someone dear.

"It was the first time," he said softly. "The first time someone told me I was needed. Without demanding anything from me, without forcing anything upon me... he simply cherished me as I was."

"Qi Yu..."

His bittersweet smile held both sorrow and warmth.

He looked like someone in love—someone who had found something precious to him.

Shen Xinghui understood.

He had someone he loved, too.

"I was unwanted, despised, and my life was considered just a disposable. But for the first time in my life someone said he needed me. I want to repay him somehow. And if this is the reason I was brought to this world, then I want to see it through. Don’t you think it’s rather poetic? The one who was cast aside ends up saving this world."

This was Qi Yu’s reason.

Shen Xinghui could feel the strength of his resolve—something he himself did not yet possess.

He nodded his head in silent acknowledgment.

Just then, a loud noise echoed in the distance.

Qi Yu’s eyes narrowed as he stood up.

At the same time, Ignatius came rushing in.

"Xinghui! A monster is nearby. I’m going to take it down, so stay here—"

"No, allow me to go instead," Qi Yu interrupted. "This is a rare moment for you to spend time with your family. It would be rude of me to intrude any longer."

Qi Yu turned to leave, but without thinking, Shen Xinghui reached out and grabbed his arm.

He didn’t know why, but he felt a sudden sadness, a loneliness, as if letting go of that hand would mean losing something important.

Qi Yu simply smiled and gently pried Shen Xinghui’s fingers away.

"I had a wonderful time today," he said. "I never expected to meet someone from my homeland in this world. It was a meaningful and warm moment. Thank you."

"Wait—"

Before Shen Xinghui could finish his sentence, Qi Yu placed a finger against his lips, silencing him with a gentle smile.

Then, he leaning in close and whispered in his ear.

"My special skill is called ’Divine Audience.’ Ignatius should know about it. Ask him later, quietly."

With that, Qi Yu waved and disappeared into the darkness.

Shen Xinghui wanted to chase after him.

He wanted to stop him.

But something held him back, as if Qi Yu himself was refusing to be stopped.

Later, when he asked Ignatius about it, he learned that ’Divine Audience’ was an extremely rare skill that required a specific condition to activate: one had to take the lives of a hundred beings.

In other words, one had to slay a hundred monsters.

And the ability granted upon activation was just one thing—the chance to meet this world’s gods after death.

Five years passed after that encounter.

Although Shen Xinghui sometimes thought about it, it had become more of a distant memory.

Then, one day, a letter arrived.

"A letter...?"

Delivered by magic, the letter contained only a single, elegantly written line.

"Little by little, your wish is coming true. There is no need to worry anymore. The future of this world is moving toward the light."

At the bottom of the letter was a name: Qi Yu.

Tears streamed down Shen Xinghui’s face before he realized it.

It wasn’t just for the endangered species that had been suffering.

Somewhere out there, a kindhearted person had sent this message.

That thought alone filled his heart with warmth and relief.
