Chapter 366: Unromantic? Never
The ladies were done with dinner at a quarter past nine. They quickly tidied the dining table before moving to their next agenda — watching a movie together. But showering came first.
"Lari! Look! Wear it tonight. We’ll match."
Madeline proudly handed the confused Lariette a plastic bag before the latter disappeared inside her bedroom. Blinking, she took the item out, only to see pastel pink pajamas with little strawberries, hearts and clouds.
Lariette beamed, "This is cute! Thanks, Maddie."
Madeline smiled, "Mine’s in purple. Anyway, I gonna shower too. See you soon."
Lariette chuckled as she watched Madeline rush to the empty guest room, her footsteps echoing in the hallway. She ran a palm over the fabric, feeling how soft it was.
The ladies didn’t take long to shower. In less than half an hour, Lariette and Madeline, now changed into matching pajamas, gathered in the living room with a bag of sour gummies and a tub of caramel-glazed popcorn.
Lariette braided her long hair loosely, draping over one shoulder while Madeline pulled her hair into a messy bun. They curled up on the couch, watching a classic romantic comedy movie.
"Whew~ I forgot how fun this was," Madeline said, grabbing a handful of popcorn.
"Hehe, it’s been ages," Lariette replied, glancing at Madeline with a smile in her eyes, "We haven’t done any sleepovers in months. The last one was back during my summer break."
Madeline was her rock when Lariette took the painful but much-needed decision to dump the cheating Damien. Her dear friend often accompanied her and even helped with her impulsive plan to marry a man contractually.
Madeline threw Lariette a meaningful look, her lips curling into a teasing grin, "Yeah, before my cousin swooped in like a romantic lead from a drama."
Lariette blushed, "Stop."
No longer interested in the movie playing on the TV, Madeline turned to face Lariette, one arm propping on the backrest. She continued teasing her friend, her voice laced with mock drama.
"Lari, I still can’t believe you’re enamored with my cousin. I mean, I know Rudy’s a fine specimen of a man, but it’s still funny. Well, it’s funnier to watch him actually. His confession surprised you, right?"
"I didn’t expect it either," Lariette admitted softly, cheeks still pink, "I never thought he already had feelings for me when he offered to be my contract husband. You know that... I’ve never met him."
"He always heard about you from me," Madeline chuckled, one brow arching as mischief glinting in her blue eyes, "And~ Somehow, you caught the attention of the unromantic man."
Lariette laughed in helplessness, thinking how much wrong Madeline’s remarks were.
Ruediger, an unromantic man? He was far from that.
Not only was he romantic during their daily lives, but he also intensified his efforts during special occasions. She felt as if she was the most pampered queen because of him.
But it was not weird if Madeline couldn’t see that due to Ruediger’s almost non-existent love life. And also because of their sibling-like relationships.
Growing up together, Ruediger and Madeline were more like siblings than just cousins. The younger siblings were prone to gag when other people praised their elder brothers or sisters, and vice versa.
Anyway, she didn’t intend to open up much about how romantic he was to her. She wanted to hold the moments dear and let them be exclusive to just her.
And thankfully, Madeline seemed not keen to know more about her elder cousin’s romantic life even though his partner was her own best friend.
The pair continued watching the movie, occasionally laughing as the leads’ antics tickled their hearts. As time passed, they almost emptied the gummy bag and popcorn tub.
"Haa~ I want some sparks of romance in my life too."
Madeline exhaled as she watched the ending scene of the movie, earning Lariette’s laughter. It showed the leads having a romantic honeymoon by the seaside.
Crossing both arms over her chest, Madeline grumbled again, "Dating apps are a waste of time. All the men I met wanted sex right after our first date. What? Couldn’t we get used to each other more first?"
Madeline didn’t care about others’ sexual preferences nor she wanted to police them. As she grew older, she wished to focus on the emotional connection first.
What upset her was when she had already told the other party her boundaries, he said he respected them, only to pressure her to do otherwise next.
Feeling sorry for her friend, Lariette scooted closer, one arm reaching across Madeline’s shoulders. She said softly, "You’ll surely meet someone good. You like outdoor activities, right? Why don’t you join clubs? Who knows, you might find someone."
"Well, that sounds great. My love life isn’t like Rudy and yours," Madeline laughed, her eyes curving into crescent moons, "I think your story with him is already movie-worthy enough."
"Ahem, I didn’t mean to," Lariette blushed, the pink color on her cheeks intensified, "Anyway, you’re a good woman. You’ll meet someone good too."
"Hehe, thank you, Lari~" Madeline suddenly hugged Lariette, making the latter laugh, and then she said, "Well, being single isn’t that bad. Better than being with someone wrong."
Lariette smiled, one hand patting Madeline’s back. She remembered how many admirers her friend had back in college, but none of them really caught her eye.
Madeline did go out with a few, unfortunately, quite a number of the men wooed her for her status as a member of the Alvord family. Some blatantly asked her for a huge amount of money after their early dates.
Glancing at the clock, Lariette found that it was near eleven. She patted Madeline’s back. She better shift the topic to something else unless her friend still wanted to talk about it later.
"Maddie, wanna go to bed now? We can lie down and chat."
Madeline perked up, "Let’s! Oh! Let’s wear masks! I brought some good ones."
"Okay~"
Lariette dragged Madeline from the couch. After throwing the empty bag and tub, they headed to the pink bedroom down the hallway, excited for their next agenda.
