Chapter 55: Hospital Discharge

(BEEP BEEP BEEP)

"Argh..."

(BEEP BEEP BEEP)

"...Argh!!"

(BEEP BEEP BEEP)

"...Damnit."

Reaching his hand forward, James fumbled around his bedside, blindly grasping at the origin of the noise.

He could enjoy a couple more minutes of precious sleep as long as he could press the snooze button.

Soon, the soldier managed to accomplish that goal as his fingers wrapped around his smartphone.

Quickly moving his thumb, he frantically tapped the phone’s screen, hoping to somehow accurately tap the snooze icon.

He was too tired to look at his phone after all...

After several dreadful, noisy moments, the horrible buzzing finally stopped.

’Ah... It’s over,’ James thought to himself with a grin.

Now, he could enjoy a couple extra minutes of sleep.

A new video game he’d been waiting for had finally come out not too long ago, the sixth installment for a major series that didn’t have a new game in over twelve years.

With that finally coming out, James spent every waking moment playing it.

At least whenever he didn’t have obligations with work, that is.

Thankfully, his roommates seemed to share his passion, so they never got mad at him for playing into the night.

In fact, they even did the same themselves.

They’d take turns using their game system and watch the others play when it wasn’t their turn.

James enjoyed having his roommates for company, and they all got along well!

’...Damn Those B*stards!’

One day... James would make sure they paid.

Why was he stuck with these people for roommates...

A chorus of groans rang out as several hands blindly reached for their alarms, each desperately trying to press the snooze button.

However, it was already too late.

Being subjected to a cacophony of siren-like alarms had woken him up entirely.

At this point, he might start getting ready.

Groggily pulling himself up, James made his way to the communal washroom.

This was how it was every day in their room.

All three would sleep late and be forced awake by the sound of each other’s alarm.

However, this might have been for the better.

After all, they were already waking up quite late.

If James was rooming with any of his squad mates, there was no way he’d be allowed to sleep this late.

It just so happened that he needed to visit those people since their leader was finally being discharged from the hospital today.

Out of curiosity, James pulled up his phone to check the time.

He promised to meet them at 10 a.m., so he needed to make sure to get there on time.

[10:23 AM]

"Ha ha ha..."

His eyes were so tired that they were playing tricks on him.

Splashing water on his face to help wake him up, he checked his phone again.

Now that he was awake, he’d be able to read it properl-

[10:24 AM]

"...F*ck me."

James’s face paled as he was forced to accept the truth.

Since it was a Saturday, he had set his alarm later than usual so that he could sleep in.

It just so happened that he also forgot to set the alarm for today to be earlier than usual so that he could wake up beforehand.

So yeah... He f*cked up.

After getting ready and leaving his room in the barracks, James made his way to the medical ward.

Navigating through the extensive building, which smelled of rubbing alcohol and disinfectant, James soon found his way to the pre-determined meeting spot.

Three women wearing a similar uniform as himself were standing against a wall chatting amongst themselves.

Noticing James’s arrival, Jenna frowned.

"...You’re almost half-an-hour late."

James coughed lightly before awkwardly looking away.

"Um... I got stuck in traffic?"

Marilla narrowed her eyes.

"The barracks is a five-minute walk from here, idiot. Just admit that you overslept... Again."

In a desperate attempt to protect himself from their ruthless grilling, James turned to Kaylen.

"When’s Mack going to come out?"

Despite seeing through his blatant bid to change the topic, she decided to play along with it.

"He’s getting changed at the moment, so it’ll be another minute or so."

James let out a sigh of relief.

’So, I’m not late...’

If Jenna and Marilla had heard his thoughts, they would have beaten him to a pump...

Just as he thought that, the door in front of him opened, and a young man wearing a military uniform stepped out.

The man had an insignia denoting his affiliation as a first lieutenant of the army.

Of course, it was none other than Mark himself.

"Hey, big man, how’re you feeling?" Marilla asked with a grin.

Mack stretched his arm before nodding in satisfaction.

"Good as ever, but before that, can we go ea-"

(Rumble)

Mack awkwardly looked at his stomach before coughing once.

Jenna chuckled lightly.

"Yeah, I was getting a bit hungry myself. Let’s go have brunch. It’ll be my treat."

James was tempted to point out that the food in the mess hall was all free but decided against it.

If he antagonized her, she might rat him out for oversleeepi-

"Oh yeah, Mack, did you know James overslept again today?"

James’ face crumpled in real-time.

Was there no such thing as friendship and camaraderie in their squad?

What about brotherhood and sisterhood? Weren’t they supposed to live and die together?

Instead, they betrayed him by snitching him out.

Feeling Mack’s gaze fall on him, James felt wronged.

Why did this always happen to him?

After Mack chewed them out about proper military conduct for several agonizing minutes, they made their way to the mess hall to grab some food.

Being as crowded as ever, it took them a decent while to finally grab their meals and find a spot to sit down.

Biting into his scrambled eggs, Mack turned to his squad mates.

"By the way, how’s Blaine doing?"

Jenna lifted an eyebrow in confusion.

"That knight from the Royal Guard? Do you have business with him?"

Mack nodded his head.

"Yeah, I wanted to go thank him. He did save my life after all."

Marilla chuckled lightly as she shovelled a piece of ham into her mouth.

"He saved my bacon, too, and everyone else."

"Do you know where he is right now?" Mack asked.

His squad mates exchanged glances before shaking their heads.

After swallowing a mouthful of oatmeal, James answered him.

"He’s not here right now. He got sent on another mission before we had the chance to meet him. He left the same day."

Mack sighed and shook his head.

"That kid is being overworked; he’s only sixteen for crying out loud."

Marilla smiled wryly.

"Considering how understaffed we are, people as capable as him will be worked to the bone."

"Even as a 1-Star, my workload isn’t near his level. That guy’s something else entirely."

Mack couldn’t help but feel a bit of pity for the auburn-haired youth.

Although he wasn’t privy to the details of Blaine’s mission, he was sure of one thing.

If any other 1-Star were in, put in his shoes... They would have most likely died ages ago.

Perhaps the youth was even in one such situation now.
