After Wu Jiahui had assigned the tasks to Qi Tian, he took out a bundle of White Wax Rods from his Storage Bag. These rods were specially made. He connected them one by one and then planted them on the mountaintop beneath his feet. With a palm strike, the White Wax Rods lit up as if electrified, emitting a bright glow. The light was gentle yet penetrating, and could be seen from a great distance.
Pointing at the White Wax Rod, Wu Jiahui said to Qi Tian, “Always keep an eye on it during your patrol. As long as the distance between you and it does not exceed a hundred miles, you can clearly see it. If it exceeds a hundred miles, it means you have strayed beyond the allowed distance and you have failed in your duty. A failure once or twice may be overlooked, but should it happen too often, do not blame me for being ruthless.”
After explaining everything clearly, Wu Jiahui waved his hand, urging Qi Tian to hurry up and start his first shift. Li Zizhuo and Bai Ningshuang were tasked differently; one accompanied Qi Tian on his patrol, while the other stayed at the location of the White Wax Rod, ready to provide support to Qi Tian if needed and to keep watch in another direction.
Once Wu Jiahui had arranged everything for Qi Tian and the others, he pulled Li Jun aside to talk. Throughout their conversation, they used the Sound Transmission Secret Skill, not allowing Qi Tian and the others to know what they were discussing.
Qi Tian flew off into the distance with Li Zizhuo. Before today, the two had never met and were unfamiliar with each other. However, both understood the importance of networking and, having been assigned to the same team, they began to cautiously initiate conversation. At first, they discussed nothing overly personal, just basic information, as a way to establish a preliminary understanding.
The first day of the inspection went very smoothly, with no special incidents occurring. They didn’t even encounter a single person near their setup.
The next day, it was Bai Ningshuang’s turn to accompany Qi Tian on patrol, and the situation remained calm.
On the third day, Bai Ningshuang and Li Zizhuo took over from each other. They whispered together, tense from days of vigilance. Meanwhile, Wu Jiahui and Li Jun appeared to be on vacation, either rarely seen or spotted patrolling leisurely—far from looking earnest in their duties.
Li Zizhuo and Bai Ningshuang were very dissatisfied. Why should they exert so much effort while Li Jun and Wu Jiahui benefited from their work? However, considering the power behind the latter two, no matter how dissatisfied they were, they had to suppress it. The two quietly discussed whether to push Qi Tian to stand up for their rights. Yet, they hadn’t yet decided on a plan or conditions that might appeal to Qi Tian, so they set the matter aside for the time being.
Three days passed in the blink of an eye. What was expected to be a challenging period turned out to be uneventful, which greatly surprised Team Leader Wu Jiahui. He had thought the three days would be tough, but they passed without incident. Had he known this would be the outcome, he would have taken on the patrol duty himself to establish a good image in front of his team members. Now, it was too late for regrets.
All team members gathered under the glowing White Wax Rod. Wu Jiahui announced, “My word is my bond. Qi Tian did an excellent job on his first shift. Now, it is time for the others to contribute. Li Zizhuo, how about you take the next shift?”
Li Zizhuo responded, “Leader, you had initially promised in front of everyone that after Qi Tian’s shift, it would be your turn to take over. It’s been only a few days, and you are already going back on your word in public. Do you think that’s right?”
Wu Jiahui chuckled, “Of course, I remember what I promised. If you are unwilling to take the next shift, it is no problem for me to do it. But have you considered why I did not volunteer and instead offered you this chance? It’s likely because the second shift will be as safe as the first. As the team leader, I am giving you the opportunity to handle this lesser risk task. If you don’t want it, I’ll take over.”
Li Zizhuo was unsure what to say. He knew Wu Jiahui was not being entirely magnanimous, but he had to admit there was some truth to his words. The second shift might indeed be safer. Would he miss a safer duty by not taking the shift?
“If I take the shift, how do you plan to assign companions for me?”
Wu Jiahui promptly replied, “During the first three days, you and Qi Tian and Bai Ningshuang worked well together. How about for the second shift, the three of you team up again, with you in charge and Qi Tian and Bai Ningshuang assisting? After your shift ends, Bai Ningshuang will lead the third shift with you and Qi Tian supporting. After these three shifts, it will be my turn along with Sir Li Jun.”
Li Zizhuo, Qi Tian, and Bai Ningshuang now fully understood—it was Wu Jiahui’s strategy to make them patrol more, thus increasing their exposure to potential dangers. However, from another perspective, since they had entered the secret realm to compete with another Sacred Cultivation Place for ownership, they were always in danger, no place was truly safe. While Wu Jiahui’s arrangements might seem self-serving, they could also make sense.
Li Zizhuo and Bai Ningshuang had no choice but to accept the decision, but their discontent continued to grow. Qi Tian was relatively less dissatisfied—not because he agreed with Wu Jiahui’s arrangements but because he found them beneficial. Whether patrolling with Li Zizhuo or Bai Ningshuang, Qi Tian always managed to learn something from their interactions, whether about cultivation or about everyday knowledge. This was advantageous for Qi Tian as it helped him quickly familiarize himself with Wanjie City and the surrounding Cultivation World, saving him much time in the future.
