Chapter 1123: Chapter 0657: Mysterious Fog_1 Chapter 1123: Chapter 0657: Mysterious Fog_1 Chapter 0657: Sinister Fog
The reality lay starkly in front of their eyes: turning back now was impossible. Their only option was to continue down the path before them.
Emperor Wu, Emperor Yonghe, and several other princes quickly reached a consensus. Once again, they issued a command, maintaining the original direction with the vanguard and rearguard remaining in their respective positions, pressing forward. However, Emperor Wu added two new stipulations to the command: first, to proceed at a slower pace than before, and second, he assigned two individuals to guard the edge of the fog and monitor its movements to prevent unexpected incidents.
After Emperor Wu issued the order, the entire group resumed their march according to his specifications. Trudging forward at a walking pace, they had not gone far when the Hundred-Mile Message Butterfly attached to Emperor Wu’s waist lit up. He picked it up, and as soon as he connected, a somewhat panicked voice came from the butterfly.
“Prince, something terrible has happened. The fog is moving, and in the same direction as us. Please come and take a look.”
Startled, Emperor Wu barked an order for the procession to keep moving at its original speed and direction and then made his way to the back of the column as quickly as he could. There he saw the two cultivators he had assigned to watch the fog retreating in panic. Not far from where they stood, the fog was rapidly encroaching, its pace quicker than their own—an unsettling sight.
Emperor Wu’s expression darkened. He shouted to the two cultivators, “Retreat quickly! Stop testing the edges of the fog!”
Upon receiving Emperor Wu’s command, the cultivators felt as if pardoned from death. They quickly turned and raced back, joining Emperor Wu and the others soon after.
“Prince…” They were about to tell Emperor Wu something when they suddenly saw his face turn pale with fear. They quickly turned to look and their own expressions mirrored his terror.
They clearly saw the slow-approaching fog suddenly pick up speed. The edge of the fog closed in on them with alarming velocity, as if it was about to engulf the entire group at any moment.
The danger the fog represented was not lost on anyone, Emperor Wu included, who had witnessed its potency firsthand. They knew that if the fog enveloped them, the only outcome would be total annihilation. None would be spared.
Emperor Wu was quick to react. He spun around and instantly accelerated to his peak speed, shouting, “Everyone heed my command: increase your speed immediately! Run as fast as you can! Move quickly, do not let the fog catch us!”
Some within the rank and file obeyed without question, and upon receiving Emperor Wu’s command, they sprinted ahead. Others, in a moment of panic, glanced back and saw the encroaching fog, which sent them into a state of terror. They, too, quickened their pace and ran along with the main group.
As the group’s speed increased, to their dismay, the fog sped up as well, maintaining a constant, uncomfortably close distance.
At first, Emperor Wu and his entourage were fraught with fear, but then some quick thinkers in the group noticed the pattern and promptly reported their observations to Emperor Wu.
Although still anxious, Emperor Wu knew that if they maintained the status quo—them running and the fog chasing—the ultimate losers would be themselves. They had to devise a strategy to break the unfavorable situation before them. Perhaps this realization was the clue they needed.
Emperor Wu immediately ordered the entire group to slow down once again.
This command was risky; a misjudgment could spell disaster for the entire group.
But to Emperor Wu’s relief, the order produced immediate and remarkable results. As they reduced their pace, the fog’s pursuit also decelerated.
Seeing a glimmer of hope, Emperor Wu issued a new directive, instructing the troops to come to a complete stop. Then he witnessed the once rapidly advancing edge of the fog halt as well, maintaining a distance from them that was neither too far nor too close, much like when they had first encountered it.
