Harry Potter: Westeros’s Plant Life -
0202 The Full Moon Test
The days that followed fell into a comfortable rhythm. Harry would occasionally come to Adrian's place to practice magic.
The work of tending to the plants in the plantation was also proceeding in an orderly fashion.
It turned out that Dobby was indeed a very, very qualified employee. This house-elf was simply a workaholic. In just three days, he had taken over almost all of Remus's work.
The sudden "unemployment" made Remus feel somewhat uneasy.
For a moment, he felt his salary wasn't very well-deserved. But it was quite nice.
On a dusk in early July, when the sky had gradually turned crimson, Adrian and Remus stood in the clearing of the plantation, waiting for the approaching night.
Today was the night of the full moon, and Adrian planned to observe up close how Remus transformed into a werewolf.
At this moment, Remus was somewhat hesitant. "Are you really going to watch from the side? It might be dangerous. Even if the potion worked as we hope, I can't guarantee complete control."
Adrian, by contrast, appeared almost relaxed.
"Don't worry about me," He shook his head nonchalantly and said with a dismissive wave of his hand. "You know my abilities. How did you spend your transformation time before?"
Remus smiled bitterly, rolling up his sleeves to reveal several faint scars.
"I'd chain myself with special chains and hide in some deserted place, Honestly, it was quite safe, but very hard to endure."
By now, the sun had disappeared behind the horizon, leaving only the faintest blush of color in the western sky. The first stars were beginning to appear and there, rising like a silver coin was the moon, already past half-full and growing brighter with each passing moment.
"I'll try to be gentle," Adrian said, his voice carrying a note of dry humor that seemed almost inappropriate given the seriousness of the situation.
With a thought, a large mass of Devil's Snare emerged from his body, wriggling with teeth and claws.
"As long as it doesn't touch flames, Devil's Snare vines are definitely more reliable than your iron chains," Adrian assured him with confidence.
Remus looked up at the vines that danced overhead like serpents preparing to strike, and felt his mouth twitch in what might have been amusement under different circumstances.
The sight was both reassuring and unsettling, he had no doubt that the Devil's Snare could restrain him, but the idea of being held by something that could crush him with a thought was not particularly comforting.
But at least Adrian's safety could be guaranteed.
But even with these precautions in place, years of hard-won experience compelled him to give one final warning. "After I become a werewolf, it's best not to get close to me, If you get hurt by me—if the worst happens—immediately use a mixture of powdered silver and dittany."
"I already said not to worry," Adrian repeated, though his tone had grown gentler in response to Remus's obvious distress. "Besides, I can also use Animagus transformation."
The reminder seemed to release some of the tension that had been building in Remus's shoulders. He nodded slowly, then reached into his robes and took out his wand temporarily handing it over to Adrian for safekeeping.
Animagus transformation would indeed provide perfect protection against a werewolf's instinctive aggression. Werewolves were driven to attack humans and didn't recognize animal forms as targets. Moreover, with animal companionship, a werewolf's brutal instincts would be somewhat alleviated.
The moon continued its climb across the star-studded sky, its silver light grew stronger with each passing moment. When the first rays touched Remus's face.
He began to tremble—not the gentle shaking of nervousness, but violent, uncontrollable spasms that wracked his entire body. His hands clawed at his clothes as if trying to tear away some invisible binding, his breathing became rapid and shallow.
Adrian knew the time was almost up.
The next second, Remus let out a painful groan, and his entire body began to twist and transform.
The moment the Remus completely transformed to a Werewolf, Adrian immediately controlled the Devil's Snare, and the flexible vines wrapped around Remus's limbs, fixing him gently but firmly to the ground.
Surprisingly, the werewolf Remus didn't struggle, but instead kept his head down, and was unusually quiet.
When Remus raised his head, Adrian could see from his eyes that he was very lucid, even carrying a trace of disbelief.
"Remus?" Adrian asked tentatively. "Can you still hear my voice?"
For a moment, the only sound was the gentle rustle of leaves in the evening breeze and the distant chirping of night insects beginning their nighttime chorus.
Then, in a voice that was rough and changed but undeniably conscious, came the reply: "Yes..."
Adrian's eyes lit up, and he waved his hand, causing the Devil's Snare vines to return to his body.
Looking at the current situation, Remus seemed to have retained not just his consciousness, but his reasoning ability as well. The Purification Potion had worked—not perfectly, perhaps, but far better than Adrian had dared to hope.
The effect was quite similar to Wolfsbane Potion.
Remus carefully took a few steps, stopping about three meters away from Adrian, his gray-black fur was glistening in the moonlight.
He examined his body carefully and said in disbelief, "This is the first time in years I've maintained my sanity during transformation."
"The potion's effect is excellent," Adrian said, unable to keep the satisfaction from his voice. Without hesitation, he strode forward, closing the distance between them.
Remus tensed slightly as Adrian approached.
"Hold still," Adrian murmured, reaching up to examine Remus's transformed features.
His fingers probed gently at the edges of Remus's eyes, checking the dilation of his pupils and their response to the bright moonlight.
"Pupil response to light is normal," he murmured, "Auditory organs are intact, breathing is stable, heart rate elevated but within expected parameters..."
The assessment made Remus intensely uncomfortable. He stepped back, breaking free from Adrian's examining hands.
"Easy," Adrian said with a slight smile, recognizing the discomfort. "I'm just curious about the physiological changes."
From his pocket, he took out what appeared to be an ordinary frisbee, though closer inspection revealed it to be made of some silvery metal that caught and reflected the moonlight in dazzling patterns.
"Now let's conduct a simple behavioral test," Adrian said waving the frisbee in the moonlight.
Before Remus could ask what kind of test, Adrian drew back his arm and hurled the frisbee into the night sky with considerable force.
The frisbee traced an arc, and Remus's ears immediately perked up, his body unconsciously leaning forward, muscles tensing, he was completely in a posture ready to pounce. He instinctively wanted to chase that frisbee.
"Wait, wait—" Remus returned to his normal posture, and stopped in place for a moment. "Why do I want to do this?"
The question was barely out of his mouth when the frisbee suddenly changed direction in mid-flight, spinning back toward them with increased velocity. Its return trajectory was so fast and unexpected that it was almost impossible to track visually.
"Snap!"
The sound of Remus's claws closing around the metallic disc was sharp and clean in the night air. He had moved without conscious thought, his reflexes allowed him to snatch the frisbee from the air with perfect precision.
For a moment, he simply stared at the frisbee in his grasp, amazed by the speed and accuracy of his own response.
"Your reaction speed is significantly enhanced compared to your human form," Adrian observed with obvious satisfaction. "That's a specialized training disc designed for magical creatures—specifically used to improve the bond between owners and their pets."
Hearing this, Remus twitched the corner of his mouth. "You really didn't need to explain that to me."
He had very nearly bolted after the disc like an oversized dog chasing a thrown stick. The fact that some part of him had genuinely wanted to do exactly that was unsettling.
"Now for some more complex testing," Adrian continued, apparently oblivious to Remus's discomfort. He reached into his robes and returned Remus's wand to him. "Can you still use magic in this state?"
Remus looked at his claws, then took the wand, trying to grip it. But his sharp nails and deformed joints made it impossible for him to hold it steady.
"I'm not quite used to it yet," Remus muttered, finally finding a suitable angle and awkwardly gripping the wand firmly.
"Lumos!" he said, putting as much focus and intent behind the simple spell as he could manage.
The wand tip flickered uncertainly—once, twice, three times—before finally bursting into steady white light.
It wasn't the most elegant casting Adrian had ever witnessed, but it was undeniably successful. The light was bright and stable, exactly what one would expect from a properly executed Lumos charm.
This also meant that Remus could successfully cast magic while in werewolf form.
Adrian immediately became excited. "This is wonderful! Think about it—after becoming a werewolf, your physical abilities will improve tremendously. Although it still needs some practice, your ability to use magic still exists. This means your combat effectiveness will achieve a qualitative leap."
However, Remus didn't look happy at all.
He said in a complicated tone, "But this is only limited to full moon nights, and I want to say that becoming a werewolf is not a good experience, regardless of retained consciousness. No one would voluntarily want this..."
"It would be great if werewolf transformation could also be freely controlled." Adrian shook his head regretfully.
Hearing Adrian's words, Remus was startled.
"Don't joke about such things, Adrian," Remus said, his voice taking on a serious tone. "Becoming a werewolf isn't as wonderful as you seem to imagine."
"Oh, but that's not necessarily true," Adrian replied with a smile and shared his thoughts. "Consider this—if lycanthropy could be controlled, it would no longer be a curse, but rather a form of magical enhancement worth mastering. You can think about it like Animagus transformation, how many wizards spend years trying to learn that magic?"
"But that's nothing more than a pipe dream," Remus said firmly. "Wizards have been studying lycanthropy for centuries. The best they've managed is potions like Wolfsbane, which can suppress some of the worst effects of the lycanthropic virus."
"The path of exploration is endless, Remus," Adrian said softly. "What seems impossible today may be commonplace tomorrow."
