Chapter 43: Chapter 43: New Threat

Chapter 11: A New Threat Rises

The battlefield was eerily silent. The lifeless husks of the undead army littered the ground, their twisted forms crumbling into dust with each passing moment. The air, once thick with the metallic scent of blood and the stench of decay, now carried only the heavy weight of exhaustion.

Azrael wiped the sweat and grime from his forehead, breathing heavily. His body screamed in protest, his wound throbbing, but he forced himself to stay on his feet.

Selene crouched beside him, her hands still hovering over his injury, dark energy swirling faintly around her fingertips. "You shouldn’t move yet," she scolded, worry evident in her eyes.

Azrael gave her a tired smirk. "I’ll rest when I’m dead."

Lyra scoffed, flicking a broken bone aside with her boot. "If you keep pushing yourself like this, that won’t be too far off."

Before Azrael could respond, Naya, who had been standing at the edge of the village, suddenly tensed. Her eyes darted toward the distant hills.

Something wasn’t right.

Azrael followed her gaze, his muscles tightening. The wind had shifted, carrying with it a strange, almost unnatural chill.

"I sense something," Naya whispered, her voice barely audible. "Something... worse."

Selene frowned. "Worse than an army of undead?"

Naya nodded, her face pale. "Much worse."

An Ominous Presence

Without warning, the ground beneath them trembled. A low, guttural roar echoed from the horizon, sending shivers down their spines.

Azrael turned sharply, gripping his sword. "Everyone, get ready."

They barely had time to react before a wave of suffocating darkness spread across the landscape. The night sky seemed to blacken further, as if the stars themselves had been swallowed by an unseen force.

And then they heard it.

A piercing, bloodcurdling shriek.

Selene’s breath hitched. "That’s not human."

From the shadows, monstrous figures began to emerge.

A swarm of grotesque, winged creatures blotted out the moon, their leathery wings flapping violently. Their elongated limbs ended in razor-sharp claws, their mouths filled with rows of jagged teeth. Beneath them, an endless horde of figures marched forward in perfect unison, their eyes glowing with unnatural hunger.

"The necromancer’s army wasn’t the real threat," Lyra whispered in horror. "This is."

Azrael’s grip on his sword tightened. "We fight."

The Second Battle Begins

The flying creatures struck first, diving down at terrifying speeds.

Azrael barely managed to raise his sword in time as one of them lunged at him, its claws slicing through the air. He rolled to the side, slashing upward as he moved. His blade connected, severing one of its wings. The creature let out a screech of pain before crashing into the ground, writhing violently.

Selene raised her hands, summoning a wave of dark energy that exploded outward. The impact sent several creatures tumbling, their twisted forms dissolving into ash.

"They’re fast!" Naya shouted, barely dodging a swipe from another monster. "And strong!"

Lyra gritted her teeth. "Then we hit harder."

She flipped backward, dodging an incoming attack before driving her sword through the chest of an advancing creature. Its glowing eyes flickered before it crumpled to the ground.

But for every enemy they struck down, three more took its place.

"We can’t keep this up forever!" Selene gasped, panting.

Azrael knew she was right. They were outnumbered. Badly.

Then, an idea struck him.

He activated The Bond of the Fallen.

A surge of energy exploded from his body, linking him once more to the girls. The air crackled with raw power as their weapons began to glow, shifting into even deadlier forms.

Selene’s staff darkened, now pulsing with shadows that curled and twisted like living tendrils.

Naya’s sword elongated, its blade humming with an eerie, golden light.

Lyra’s twin daggers melted together, forming a massive scythe that gleamed under the dim light.

The creatures hesitated for the first time, sensing the shift in power.

Azrael smirked. "Now let’s even the odds."

A Desperate Stand

With renewed strength, they charged.

Azrael spun through the battlefield like a whirlwind, his enhanced sword cutting through enemies with ruthless precision. One of the winged creatures dove at him, but he sidestepped, slicing its throat in one fluid motion.

Selene unleashed a barrage of shadow spears, impaling multiple enemies at once. "I could get used to this," she muttered, a fierce grin on her face.

Naya moved with impossible speed, her glowing blade slicing through the enemy ranks like a hot knife through butter.

Lyra leaped into the air, her scythe glowing menacingly. With one powerful swing, she cleaved through an entire row of creatures, their bodies disintegrating upon impact.

For a moment, they had the upper hand.

But the enemy was relentless.

A deafening roar shattered the air.

From the darkness, a massive, hulking figure stepped forward.

It was easily three times the size of any other creature, its grotesque form covered in thick, bone-like armor. Glowing red veins pulsed beneath its skin, and its clawed hands looked capable of crushing stone.

Azrael’s stomach dropped.

"That... is going to be a problem."

The Titan of Shadows

The creature lunged.

Azrael barely had time to react before it slammed its fist into the ground, sending shockwaves through the battlefield. The impact sent him flying, his body crashing into a half-collapsed wall. Pain exploded through his ribs, but he forced himself to stand.

Selene’s eyes widened. "That thing is radiating pure dark magic."

Naya clenched her jaw. "If we don’t kill it fast, it’ll tear through us."

Azrael nodded. "Then let’s take it down."

They attacked together.

Selene unleashed a barrage of dark energy, but the creature barely flinched. Naya’s sword slashed across its thick hide, but the wound closed instantly.

Lyra darted behind it, driving her scythe deep into its back. The monster let out a guttural roar, swinging its massive arm in retaliation.

Lyra barely dodged. "This thing’s tougher than it looks!"

Azrael gritted his teeth. They needed more firepower.
