Chapter 790
Chapter 790: Chapter 790
The embroidered shoes agreed to Yang Fan’s condition. Leaping down from his hand, they stepped with an unhurried gait, gradually ascending the thick tree trunk.
The trunk, covered with moss, was incredibly slippery. Yet, the shoes climbed steadily, as if gravity had no power over them.
Zhou Yingnan’s eyes widened abruptly, staring in shock at the scene before him. In a low voice, he asked, "Boss Yang, you... this is..."
"A helper," Yang Fan replied nonchalantly.
Zhou Yingnan looked at Yang Fan in disbelief, his eyes fixed on him for quite a while before murmuring, "Your helper... is quite unique. A little... um, unbelievable."
"Since we’re dealing with something out of the ordinary, it’s only fitting to have some unconventional helpers," Yang Fan said.
A moment later, the embroidered shoes descended once more, still walking leisurely.
At that precise moment, an emotionless, detached voice sounded in Yang Fan’s mind: "Blood. Nest!"
"Could you be a little clearer?" Yang Fan asked.
Their cryptic words left Yang Fan unable to even imagine what kind of thing they were describing.
"A lot of blood. Nest," the embroidered shoes repeated.
Yang Fan: ...
Following their logic was clearly a dead end.
This path was bound to get narrower the farther he went.
"Lots of blood I can understand, but what kind of nest? And what’s inside it?" Yang Fan asked.
The embroidered shoes fell silent for a moment before replying, "Probably... a bird’s nest. A very large bird’s nest."
It seemed like the question posed some difficulty for them, requiring considerable thought.
Yang Fan frowned slightly, "A lot of blood and a very large bird’s nest. So, the creature must actually live up there. Are you sure there’s nothing else inside it?"
"No," the embroidered shoes answered inside Yang Fan’s mind.
"Alright, thank you for your hard work. I’ll treat you to something nice later." Yang Fan tilted his head up to gaze at the dense canopy overhead, feeling momentarily stumped. That vile thing had chosen a rather troublesome spot.
The creature could live above the trees, but he had no way of reaching it.
"It seems you might have actually guessed right—maybe it really is a bird," Yang Fan said, exasperated.
"A bird?!" Zhou Yingnan froze for a moment, his disbelief evident. "I was just joking. How could it actually be a bird? What kind of bird could be that... weird?"
"It’s definitely not just any ordinary bird. My helper’s descriptions are vague, but they’ve only seen a giant bird’s nest and a lot of blood. It’s undoubtedly something unnatural. Let’s go; we need to figure this out," Yang Fan said.
"The creature lives in the tree, but I can’t climb up there. Let’s first find out exactly what it is before deciding our next move."
Zhou Yingnan squinted and strained his eyes, staring upward at the treetop. But apart from the dense branches and the light filtering through, he saw nothing. "A bird that likes to throw eyeballs at people and lives in a blood-soaked nest? Definitely not decent—kind of terrifying."
Muttering to herself, she said, "Boss Yang, why don’t I go down the mountain and borrow a drone?"
"Hmm, I was thinking the same thing," Yang Fan replied. "Let’s identify what that thing is first, and then plan accordingly. From the looks of it, your fortune-teller was way off. They said the creature was underground, but it’s clearly on the treetop."
"Those people? I think all they’re good at is scamming for money," Zhou Yingnan said irritably. "They have no other skills to speak of."
It seemed she had completely lost faith in those types after this incident.
To be fair, most people in that trade were nothing but swindlers.
The two began descending the mountain together. Zhou Yingnan opened the small shack she’d set up by the roadside and drove out her pickup truck.
"Why do you have a hole here?" Yang Fan asked curiously, after the truck moved aside to reveal a hidden cave entrance.
Zhou Yingnan poked her head out of the truck window and explained, "This cave is awesome. It’s freezing in the entrance, but inside it feels like spring all year round, and there’s even a natural hot spring. That’s why I chose to settle down here."
"Let me show you around." She jumped out of the truck, her enthusiasm suddenly heightened.
Clearly, she had a deep affection for this cave; her joyful feelings were written all over her face.
Opening a simple gate nailed together with bamboo slices, Zhou Yingnan led Yang Fan inside.
"This cave is really unique. I looked up information online before, but I still can’t figure out its principle," Zhou Yingnan said as she introduced the place while walking. "The entrance is so cold it feels like an ice cellar—a natural refrigerator."
Yang Fan could feel it now. The chill wasn’t just cold; it pierced deep into his bones.
His brows furrowed gently. Something was wrong about this place.
This coldness... it was unmistakably yin energy!
Yang Fan kept his suspicions to himself and continued walking deeper into the cave.
The cave wasn’t small, with many natural niches along its walls. Zhou Yingnan had made good use of these alcoves, turning them into open shelves filled with vegetables and various kinds of grains.
Definitely a frugal woman.
Though using yin energy as a natural refrigerator to store food seemed a bit excessive.
After walking another twenty meters or so, the cave opened up suddenly. A beam of sunlight streamed down, illuminating a bubbling hot spring below. The pool wasn’t large, but it looked big enough to accommodate seven or eight people without feeling cramped.
Near the edge of the pool were soap, towels, and other items, along with a clothing rack not far away. Hanging on it were various pieces of Zhou Yingnan’s garments: red, white, black—every color imaginable. The styles varied too, ranging from conservative to daring.
Apparently, her tastes were quite diverse.
"Take a quick look, but don’t stare too long. It’s embarrassing. This place is small, and keeping it tidy is kind of tricky." Zhou Yingnan coughed lightly and said.
She had noticed the array of her clothing but had too many items to properly hide them away.
Yang Fan withdrew his gaze and laughed, teasing, "You’ve got a wide range of preferences."
"Women should try different styles," Zhou Yingnan replied.
While her most intimate clothing had given Yang Fan an unintended glimpse, she only seemed slightly embarrassed and didn’t even blush.
If it had been someone else, their face might’ve turned red enough to resemble a traffic light.
"This pool is a gem. Want to soak for a bit?" Zhou Yingnan suggested.
Yang Fan shook his head, "No, we have bigger things to deal with. Besides, if I bathe here, you might stop liking the pool altogether. Is there more to this place?"
"Nope, this is it," Zhou Yingnan replied. "There are some small holes up above, but they’re too tiny for me to reach, so I haven’t looked closely."
Yang Fan tilted his head to look up. Below the part of the cave letting in sunlight were four or five smaller holes of varying sizes. The largest was about fifty to sixty centimeters in diameter, while the smallest was no more than twenty or thirty centimeters across.
Suddenly, Yang Fan fixed his gaze on one of the holes and asked, "Have you ever felt like you were being watched here?"
