Chapter 743
Chapter 743: Chapter 743
The locust wood was as hard as steel bars, and the saw blade erupted with sparks as it scraped against the surface.
After a few tries, the saw teeth were already worn out, but the locust wood remained completely unaffected.
Yang Fan found himself at a loss.
If even a saw couldn’t handle it, how was he supposed to carve this thing?
Simply cutting it—if a saw didn’t work—there was still the option of trying a cutting machine or something similar.
It didn’t seem like such a difficult task.
Cutting machines are designed to handle steel bars and the like; it shouldn’t be impossible to tackle this thing.
But the trick was that it also needed to be carved.
"Do I need a full set of professional carving tools?" Yang Fan muttered to himself with a hint of frustration.
He originally thought this would be an easy and leisurely job, but it turns out he’d underestimated things.
"Fanzi, what are you up to here?"
Fan Sisi and Yun Miaoyi suddenly approached together, with Fan Sisi asking curiously.
"Your grandfather found me a little task—to carve these things," Yang Fan replied.
"Playing with wood, huh? I want to join in too. Let us help you, okay?" Fan Sisi immediately perked up with interest.
"...Sure." Yang Fan agreed.
"It’s just that I’ve been stumped by these few pieces. You two can help me give it a try."
"Let me do it! How does this work?" Fan Sisi rolled up her sleeves, rubbing her hands together enthusiastically.
She seemed like someone who enjoyed playing with blades and tools when she was younger.
"First, saw it down and cut it into eighty-centimeter wooden sticks," Yang Fan said, his mouth curling into a sly smile.
"Alright then, I’m getting started." Fan Sisi said, rolling up her sleeves.
Yun Miaoyi helped measure and mark the eighty-centimeter length, while Fan Sisi grabbed the saw and began sawing.
Scrape, scrape...
With a few cuts, sparks flew everywhere, the saw teeth wore down further, and yet the locust wood remained unharmed—not even a scratch left behind.
"Fanzi, this..." Fan Sisi froze, staring wide-eyed. "This is steel bars, isn’t it?"
"No, it’s wood. But this wood isn’t ordinary," Yang Fan explained. "I plan to take it to the hardware store and use their power tools to try again—cutting out the rough shape first and then refining it slowly. I thought it’d be a carpentry job, but it’s turning out more like steelwork instead."
As expected, anything Mr. Fan specifically assigns is never simple.
Fan Sisi hefted a piece of wood to test its weight, muttering in puzzlement, "It seems heavier than wood but lighter than steel bars. How can something like this even exist in the world?"
"Sisi, between your grandfather and Fanzi being so unusual, are you still surprised by things like this?" Yun Miaoyi said in astonishment.
"I’ve been through enough by now that nothing surprises me anymore. The world is vast and full of wonders—our experiences are just too limited," Sisi replied.
"I’m still not entirely used to it." Fan Sisi shrugged, saying, "Let’s take it to the hardware store first and test it. If it works out, Fanzi, you supervise them. Meanwhile, Miss Yun and I will come back to carry another batch."
"Alright."
The trio carried the blackened locust wood to a hardware store in town.
When the cutting machine was used, it once again erupted with wild sparks but couldn’t cut through.
The owner applied too much force at one point and nearly caused an accident.
If a cutting blade shatters, the flying shards can inflict severe injuries—or even be fatal.
Thankfully, Yang Fan reacted quickly and stopped the store owner in time.
The hardware store owner was immediately caught in disbelief.
How could there still be steel bars that a cutting machine couldn’t handle?
He flipped the piece of wood over multiple times, studying it carefully, then tried again with two new cutting blades.
None of them worked—none could get through the locust wood.
Yang Fan was speechless too. If even a cutting machine couldn’t handle this, what could?
After offering the store owner an excuse about it being made of special material, the trio left with the locust wood and returned to the farmstead.
"This thing... is unsolvable!" Yang Fan stared at the pile of wood, momentarily stumped.
Fan Sisi asked, "Fanzi, you said this was something my grandfather asked you to do?"
Yang Fan nodded, "Yes, he asked me to carve it into either a wooden mace or a wooden sword."
"My grandfather’s wood probably wasn’t all like this, right? I’ve seen him working purely by hand using tools like these on the ground," Fan Sisi muttered. "Fanzi, shouldn’t you just go ask my grandfather?"
"That’s what I was thinking too." Yang Fan pulled out his phone and dialed Mr. Fan’s number.
Unable to come up with a solution, he figured this was the best course.
Mr. Fan’s side was noisy, with the bustle of many people in the background. After Yang Fan described the situation, he replied, "Figure it out yourself. If you can’t even handle this small matter, how do you expect to tackle bigger things? I’m busy over here, that’s all."
Yang Fan: ...
He finally understood—this was a test from Mr. Fan.
Since it was a test, it definitely had to do with cultivation and wouldn’t involve technological means.
"Sisi, you said your grandfather always carved entirely by hand?" Yang Fan asked.
Fan Sisi nodded, "Yep, his tools are all old pieces he’s had for decades."
"I think I know what’s going on. I’ll try again." Yang Fan’s eyes lit up, and he felt like he was onto something.
He picked up the saw again, this time channeling his Inner Qi to wrap it.
Scrape... scrape...
There was a response!
The locust wood finally showed a shallow groove as Yang Fan sawed at it.
"So that’s the trick," Yang Fan said with delight.
But as he let his mind wander for a moment, the saw blade snapped into three pieces with a *crack*.
"Damn it!"
"Fanzi, how did you manage that?" Fan Sisi asked in surprise.
The two lovely, fragrant young women crowded around him, curiously examining the faint groove Yang Fan had cut. After all, the cutting machine couldn’t even scratch it, yet Yang Fan had managed it with a regular saw—it was indeed remarkable.
They completely ignored the broken saw blade, focusing on the newly cut groove instead.
Yang Fan subtly shifted his position, then gave both Fan Sisi and Yun Miaoyi a firm slap on their slightly raised buttocks and said, "This can’t really be explained—it’s tied to the power I possess and requires channeling it. I didn’t think of this earlier, but you reminded me, so I came to realize it just now."
"Stop wondering about it and head to the hardware store to get me more tools—saws and all the gear here on the ground, bring me four or five sets!"
He had a feeling he’d be going through plenty of equipment today.
If a single lapse of concentration could snap a saw blade, four or five probably wouldn’t be enough.
Fan Sisi let out a coquettish cry, her face flushing as she pouted, "If you’re going to smack my butt, at least aim properly! You hit the seam—it hurts..."
"Did it? Here, here, let me blow on it for you—that way it won’t swell," Yang Fan said with a mischievous smirk.
Fan Sisi cupped her backside with both hands and hopped away, declaring, "No way! I’m afraid you’ll gobble me up—and then jab me with a needle afterward."
